Cincinnati Reds SP Brett Marshall (finger) strained a tendon in his right middle finger during his outing Wednesday, March 26, and as a result, the fifth rotation spot will be given to SP Alfredo Simon to start the year. "(Marshall will) be getting a second evaluation done," manager Bryan Price said. "He had an MRI after the game. He'll be seeing a hand specialist locally in Phoenix, but it doesn't look like he's going to be having any chance to open the season with us."

Cincinnati Reds SP Johnny Cueto has been named as the team's opening day starter, and he'll face the St. Louis Cardinals Monday, March 31. He'll be followed in the rotation by SPs Tony Cingrani, Homer Bailey, Mike Leake and Alfredo Simon. Cueto pitched deep into his outing on the minor league side Tuesday, March 25, after being scratched from his previous outing with shoulder and back soreness.
Fantasy Tip: Cueto owners can rest assured that his injury scare last week was nothing serious. Get him in your lineups for Week 1 of the MLB season.

Cincinnati Reds RP Alfredo Simon will have a shot to compete for a starting rotation position this spring with SP Mat Latos (knee) being slowed by an injury. Simon made 16 starts for the Baltimore Orioles in 2011. "We do know we are short one starter right now without Mat," manager Bryan Price said. "If we were to have any setbacks where Mat was not ready to start the season, we have to look at the group we have and that would include Simon."
Fantasy Tip: Simon will purely serve as rotation insurance until Latos is healthy enough to return to the rotation. As a result, Simon will likely have very little to no fantasy significance.

Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker said RPs Aroldis Chapman (allergies) and Jonathan Broxton are both unlikely to be available in a save situation Tuesday, April 30. Chapman is dealing with allergies. "Chapman looked like hell. I don't think he's available tonight," Baker said. "I don't know if (Jonathan) Broxton is available tonight. We may have to close with somebody else. He's gone two days in a row and he threw 30 pitches the day before. I was a little apprehensive about using him last night. It's not the innings sometimes, but the workload of that inning." Chapman has also worked the last two days.
Fantasy Tip: Logan Ondrusek or Alfredo Simon are the likely options to fill in if a save situation arises tonight, but they shouldn't be added just for one night.

Cincinnati Reds P Alfredo Simon is back in after taking part in the World Baseball Classic with Team Dominican Republic. He made only one three-inning appearance during the tournament, and it might have cost him a spot on the team. "He's only pitched once in the last 10-12 days," manager Dusty Baker said Friday, March 22. "We can't bump all of these guys for Alfredo to pitch. We want to get him innings. You can't force those innings because you'll end up hurting the guy."
