Roger Mooney, of The Tampa Tribune, reports the Tampa Bay Rays optioned OF Justin Ruggiano to Triple-A Durham Wednesday, March 24, and reassigned P Winston Abreu, P Joe Bateman, P Jeff Bennett, P Richard De Los Santos, P Carlos Hernandez, P Heath Phillips, IF Angel Chavez, IF J.J. Furmaniak, IF Ryan Shealy and 1B Dan Johnson to minor league camp.

Roger Mooney, of The Tampa Tribune, reports the Tampa Bay Rays signed free-agent IF Angel Chavez (Red Sox), IF J.J. Furmaniak (Phillies), C Craig Albernaz, C Nevin Ashley, SS Tim Beckham and P Heath Rollins to minor league deals with invitations to Spring Training Friday, Feb. 12.

Boston Red Sox SS Angel Chavez (knee) was hit in the right kneecap by a pitch from Minnesota Twins P Kyle Asleton Saturday, March 28, according to Adam Kilgore of The Boston Globe. After being tended to by trainer Paul Lessard and manager Terry Francona, he was replaced in the game by SS Ryan Khoury.

Nick Cafardo, of The Boston Globe, reports the Boston Red Sox are likely to stay in house as they search for a backup infielder this year. The team has been looking at acquiring Cincinnati Reds SS Jeff Keppinger, according to the Worcester Telegram. The Red Sox also have decent IFs in Nick Green, Gil Velazquez and Angel Chavez.

Art Martone, of The Providence Journal, reports the Boston Red Sox announced the signings of six free agents to 2009 minor league contracts. In addition, all six players have been invited to Boston's major league spring training camp as non-roster players. The six free agents are IF Angel Chavez, IF Nick Green, IF Ivan Ochoa, OF Chip Ambres, P Fernando Cabrera, and C Carlos Maldonado.
