Cardinals | Still looking for veteran catcher

Fri, 29 Jan 2016 04:55:39 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak is looking for options behind the plate to complement C Yadier Molina and C Brayan Pena.

Fantasy Tip: Molina may not be ready for Opening Day and Pena is little more than a backup that can be pressed into starting duty for a few weeks. The club needs more help, so monitor who the Cardinals get.

Reds | Brayan Pena tests his injuries

Wed, 16 Sep 2015 20:39:27 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Brayan Pena (hamstring) did some crouching and throwing drills Wednesday, Sept. 16, and he caught a bullpen session from SP Anthony DeSclafani. He might return to the lineup sometime during the upcoming series with the Milwaukee Brewers, manager Bryan Price said.

Fantasy Tip: Pena ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) could return sometime soon, but he is still not a useful FantasyScore option until he proves his health in a full game without any setbacks.

Reds | Brayan Pena to miss time

Wed, 09 Sep 2015 21:39:34 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Brayan Pena (hamstring) left the game Wednesday, Sept. 9, against the Pittsburgh Pirates due to a hamstring injury. He said initial test results were positive, but he will have more tests Thursday, Sept. 10. He might only be out a couple of days.

Fantasy Tip: Pena ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) is only worth using in FantasyScore to help save salary to allocate to more valuable positions.

Reds | Brayan Pena batting second vs. Brewers

Fri, 28 Aug 2015 14:06:26 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Brayan Pena is batting second against Milwaukee Brewers SP Taylor Jungmann Friday, Aug. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Pena ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) grabs a nice value boost hitting atop the lineup. Still, he you'll want to keep your expectations in check. Pena's on-base percentage (.340) is higher than his slugging percentage (.319), after all. He is nothing more than an endgame lineup filler at FantayScore Friday.

Reds | Brayan Pena out Tuesday

Tue, 25 Aug 2015 11:25:21 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Brayan Pena is not in the starting lineup for the second straight day Tuesday, Aug. 25. C Tucker Barnhart receives the start again and is batting eighth against Los Angeles Dodgers SP Alex Wood.

Fantasy Tip: Barnhart ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) has just four home runs in the last two years, so he's a very weak FantasyScore option as your catcher. He also is hitting just .194 (6-for-31) with no homers against lefties this year.

Reds | Tucker Barnhart draws into lineup

Mon, 24 Aug 2015 11:35:28 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Tucker Barnhart is starting and hitting eighth against Detroit Tigers SP Buck Farmer Monday, Aug. 24. C Brayan Pena is taking the day off.

Fantasy Tip: Barnhart ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) typically is a backup catcher to avoid in daily games, but his matchup against Farmer makes him at least worth consideration as a deep sleeper.

Reds | Brayan Pena starting vs. Arizona

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 12:33:18 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Brayan Pena is batting seventh against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Rubby De La Rosa Friday, Aug. 21.

Fantasy Tip: FantasyScore players should view Pena ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) as a potential source of cap relief Friday. He has a .359 on-base percentage against righties, but he also offers limited upside with a measly .347 slugging percentage against them. It is likely wise to aim higher.

Reds | Bryan Pena not playing

Thu, 20 Aug 2015 13:59:25 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Brayan Pena is not in the starting lineup Thursday, Aug. 20. C Tucker Barnhart receives the start again and is hitting eighth against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin.

Fantasy Tip: It's a stretch to consider Barnhart ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) for your FantasyScore lineups against Corbin, who has been impressive in his return from Tommy John surgery.

Reds | Tucker Barnhart draws into lineup

Wed, 19 Aug 2015 15:13:38 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Tucker Barnhart is starting behind the plate and batting seventh against Kansas City Royals SP Jeremy Guthrie Wednesday, Aug. 19. C Brayan Pena is not in the starting lineup Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Barnhart ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) and Pena ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) are both switch hitters, and they've entered a full-on platoon. Each has started three of the past six games. It is hard on their seasonal value, but at FantasyScore, they're both low-priced options for favorable matchups. Barnhart is worth a look as a lineup filler Wednesday.

Reds | Quiet on the trade front for the Reds

Tue, 18 Aug 2015 14:50:48 -0700

Cincinnati Reds OF Marlon Byrd, 2B Skip Schumaker, C Brayan Pena and RP Manny Parra are all potential trade candidates who could likely clear waivers, but Cincinnati has not received any trade interest on them, accordingly to general manager Walt Jocketty.

Fantasy Tip: There is still potential a deal could be made before the deadline for players to be eligible for the post season Monday, Aug. 31, but outside Byrd ($4,600, 9.2% of cap), the other three are essentially fantasy afterthoughts outside cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues.
