Twins | Ervin Santana scheduled to throw

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 23:55:09 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Ervin Santana (back) is scheduled to have a light throwing session Saturday, April 30.

Fantasy Tip: Manager Paul Molitor said he expects Santana to be ready to come off the 15-day disabled list when eligible, but fantasy owners should avoid him until he can make it through a full start without any setbacks.

Twins | Ervin Santana, Kyle Gibson will be ready

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 11:03:05 -0700

Minnesota Twins SPs Ervin Santana (back) and Kyle Gibson (shoulder) are both expected to be ready to come off the disabled list when they are eligible, according to manager Paul Molitor. Santana is dealing with a lower back strain, while Gibson is suffering from a right shoulder strain.

Fantasy Tip: Gibson, who was 0-3 with a 6.10 ERA in four starts, could have his rotation spot in jeopardy if top pitching prospect Jose Berrios impresses in his opportunity. Gibson should only be stashed in deeper AL-only leagues, while Berrios could be universally owned if he lives up to his billing against the Cleveland Indians Wednesday.

Twins | Ervin Santana, Kyle Gibson to DL

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 14:23:43 -0700

Minnesota Twins SPs Ervin Santana (back) and Kyle Gibson (shoulder) were placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, April 26. Santana is dealing with back spasms, while Gibson has a shoulder strain.

Fantasy Tip: Tyler Duffey replaced Santana after he was scratched from his last start. Stash Santana in deep mixed and AL-only leagues, while Gibson can likely be jettisoned everywhere. Jose Berrios, the club's top pitching prospect, will be called up to make his major league debut Wednesday. The way Minnesota's rotation has underwhelmed, Berrios may be one of the better arms, meaning he could stick around for a while. Grab him everywhere.

Twins | Ervin Santana likely to DL

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 11:09:24 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Ervin Santana (back) is likely to land on the disabled list. SP Jose Berrios is being called up from the minor leagues and will make the start Wednesday, April 27.

Fantasy Tip: Berrios is Minnesota's top pitching prospect, and his upside is very high with three above-average swing-and-miss offerings. He should be scooped up anywhere that he's available, even if his stay in the big leagues is short once Santana returns from injury. Berrios could also take the spot of struggling starter Kyle Gibson eventually if he pitches well in his first MLB taste.

Twins | Ervin Santana plays catch

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 14:34:19 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Ervin Santana (back) played catch Monday, April 25, but from all indications he's still sore.

Fantasy Tip: It's up in the air whether Santana will make his next start, but you should be cautious deploying him if he does. Tyler Duffey could make another start in place of Santana. The young righty doesn't strike out many and has fleeting value in AL-only leagues if he makes another start.

Twins | Ervin Santana scratched from start

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 12:15:47 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Ervin Santana (back) was scratched from his start with a sore lower back Sunday, April 24, against the Washington Nationals. SP Tyler Duffey was called up from the minors to pitch in Santana's spot. Manager Paul Molitor said Santana needs to throw a bullpen session before hopefully returning in about a week. Molitor said the team won't rush Santana.

Fantasy Tip: Hang on to Santana for now while he heals. Duffey showed excellent control as a rookie in 2015 and induces plenty of ground balls, but his ability to generate strikeouts is in question with his offspeed pitches. He may only stick around for a little bit until Santana returns, so he's a speculative flyer in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues right now.

Twins | Ervin Santana registers no-decision

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 15:17:38 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Ervin Santana picked up his third no-decision of the season in four tries Tuesday, April 19, versus the Milwaukee Brewers. He recorded five innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks. Santana also struck out two.

Fantasy Tip: The right-hander has been pretty good to start the year for fantasy owners, having allowed three earned runs or less in all four of his outings thus far. His 18-to-8 K/BB ratio in 20 innings of work is solid as well. Santana is a fine option for pitching rotations in most leagues, though his ceiling is relatively low for standard formats.

Twins | Ervin Santana to start Friday

Wed, 06 Apr 2016 19:48:32 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Ervin Santana had his next outing moved up to Friday, April 8, against the Kansas City Royals, because his opening day start was cut short due to rain. SP Tommy Milone will start Saturday, April 9, with SP Ricky Nolasco pitching Sunday, April 10.

Fantasy Tip: This is welcome news to fantasy owners who have Santana in seasonal leagues with weekly lineup changes. He threw 39 pitches while allowing two hits and two walks over two scoreless innings versus the Baltimore Orioles Monday, April 4.

Twins | Ervin Santana has outing cut short

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 21:34:49 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Ervin Santana allowed two hits and two walks in two scoreless innings Monday, April 4, against the Baltimore Orioles, but he had his start cut short due to a lengthy rain delay in the third inning. He struck out three batters.

Fantasy Tip: It's bad news for fantasy owners, but at least he didn't have a poor outing. After throwing 39 pitches, it's unlikely he'll be moved up in the rotation, but he is a set for a second start in the week in Kansas City Sunday, so all is not lost in weekly formats.

Twins | Ervin Santana looks like an ace

Fri, 25 Mar 2016 15:55:47 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Ervin Santana tossed six scoreless innings and fanned eight hitters in Grapefruit League play against the Tampa Bay Rays Friday, March 25. He lowered his spring ERA to 1.13 in 16 innings and has one more start before opening day. Santana posted a 1.62 ERA in his final seven starts last season.

Fantasy Tip: Santana's 4.00 ERA last year will scare most fantasy owners away, but his strong finish and stable skills across the board will make him an underrated end-game flier in deep mixed affairs. You could do much worse as your fourth or fifth fantasy starter.
