Chargers | Philip Rivers not on trade block

Thu, 19 Mar 2015 11:31:25 -0700

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers likely will not be traded even though he plans to play out his current contract, according to sources. The team wants to sign Rivers to a long-term contract and could use the franchise tag on him next offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers likely will remain with the team and be the starting quarterback next season. Rivers will have most of his weapons back next season and could be a starting fantasy quarterback most weeks on FantasyScore in 2015.

Chargers | SD serious about Marcus Mariota?

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 12:14:22 -0700

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is scheduled to work out for the San Diego Chargers next month, and many around the league are speculating that the team could be serious about trading up for Mariota in the year's draft. The Chargers may be prepared for a future without QB Philip Rivers, as the 2015 season is the final year of his current deal. However, general manager Tom Telesco said that the team isn't thinking of trading Rivers.

Fantasy Tip: The rumors about the Chargers trading for Mariota may be far-fetched. While Rivers should be an acceptable QB1 in many weeks in 2015, Mariota won't be anything more than a weak QB2 in standard leagues in his rookie season, no matter what team he's playing for.

Chargers | Philip Rivers dishes on future

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 12:09:24 -0700

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers isn't currently thinking about a contract extension with the team, but he believes he'll play out his current contract that ends after the 2015 season. "What I can control and all I know as of today, I am signed up for one more year," Rivers said. "I guess things could change, but with all the uncertainty in many aspects, I don't see it changing before camp gets here, and when camp gets here I'm even more certain to play it out." He won't rule out playing in Los Angeles if the team moves there, but there are more appealing cities for he and his family. The Chargers could put the franchise tag on Rivers for 2016, and there is speculation brewing that San Diego is prepared for a future without Rivers.

Fantasy Tip: If Rivers stays in San Diego for the 2015 season, his value likely won't change all that much from last season. The Bolts lost a few offensive weapons from last year, but they still have enough to make Rivers an acceptable QB1 in many weeks.

Chargers | Philip Rivers says he'll be ready

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 19:38:28 -0700

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (back) has been working out nearly every day at Chargers Park, although not to the level he normally would be at this time of year. Still, he declared Tuesday, March 17, that he will be ready for the team's offseason program.

There are also rumors the team could be interested in Oregon QB Marcus Mariota, and the team could be preparing for a future without Rivers. There have been no talks between the team and Rivers, and the team could conceivably place a franchise tag on him next offseason.

Fantasy Tip: It would be strange to see someone else running the offense in San Diego, as Rivers has been there for a while now. It remains to be seen if the team would be willing to trade up, and pay a heavy price to do so, to get Mariota, or whether Rivers will be with the team for the next few years. We'll find out in the next month, though. Rivers had a very nice season, but he turns 33 in December and is heading into the twilight.

Chargers | Relocation not bothering Philip Rivers

Wed, 25 Feb 2015 04:19:25 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers is not letting recent talk about the team leaving San Diego influence him about re-signing. "Is the location of this team going to be a deciding factor?" Rivers said in a radio station interview. "I can't honestly tell you that it will be."

Fantasy Tip: Rivers isn't worried about it, and that's a sign it won't affect his play in 2015 either. Rivers is still a solid QB1 selection in most drafts moving forward.

Chargers | SD will discuss Philip Rivers extension

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 23:17:28 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers and the team will have discussions on a contract extension at an appropriate time, but no discussions are scheduled for this week according to general manager Tom Telesco.

Fantasy Tip: No need to panic for Chargers fans. San Diego recognizes Rivers' value and intends to talk about it on its own schedule. Rivers is still a valuable QB1 option for fantasy leagues when completely healthy.

Chargers | Still no surgery for Philip Rivers

Tue, 10 Feb 2015 06:50:04 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (back) said he doesn't need surgery to repair the bulging disk in his back. "At this point, the back injury is not requiring surgery," Rivers said. "We'll kind of revisit it in a month or so. But everything is improving. I'm back to my regular workouts and running around. Me and my wife played a little tennis the other day. I've hit the golf ball a few times, so I'm actually on the up and up. So I'm pretty excited."

Fantasy Tip: Rivers has been playing it by ear all offseason, and there's a chance he'll eventually require surgery. We liken Rivers' situation to that of Tony Romo, who entered last season around the same age with a balky back. The pieces around Rivers aren't as strong, but Rivers still makes a midrange QB1 in traditional leagues.

Chargers | Philip Rivers focuses on rest

Mon, 05 Jan 2015 15:23:28 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (back, ribs) is looking forward to resting and rehabbing in the offseason after absorbing 36 sacks this season and dealing with a bulging disc in his back and injured ribs down the stretch. He may tailor his offseason workouts a bit after focusing on endurance training and mobility last offseason. Rivers won't commit to whether he'll need offseason surgery on his back. Rivers took a league-high 544 attempts out of the shotgun this year, according to ESPN Stats & Information. He was ranked 30th in the league in play-action passes, even though he completed a league-high 82$ of play-action passes for 495 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers played noticeably down in the second half of the season when facing much better defenses, and the lack of a consistent running game didn't help his cause. For 2015, Rivers should be considered a midrange QB1.

Chargers | SD hopes to keep Philip Rivers

Thu, 01 Jan 2015 06:51:27 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers and the team will work on a long-term deal, according to general manager Tom Telesco. Rivers is set to become a free agent after the 2015 season. Telesco noted he wants Rivers to retire as a Charger.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers continues to be a mid-range No. 1 quarterback in the majority of leagues, and he also usually comes at a discount on draft day. He has been a top-10 quarterback in seven of the last nine seasons, which doesn't project to change significantly going forward.
