Chargers | Philip Rivers probable

Fri, 19 Dec 2014 14:04:24 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (chest, back) fully practiced Friday, Dec. 19, and is probable for the team's Week 16 game.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers will be good to go in Week 16, but he is not a strong play this week as he deals with a back injury and faces an extremely talented San Francisco defense.

Chargers | Philip Rivers ready for Saturday

Thu, 18 Dec 2014 20:20:01 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (back) looked good throwing the ball in the practice Thursday, Dec. 18, according to head coach Mike McCoy. "Philip had an outstanding day," McCoy said. "A ball did not hit the ground in all the throws he made today. Philip was Philip, so he'll be ready to roll."

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like Rivers will suit up in Week 16, but he has struggled in his last two starts and isn't a smart play at FantasyScore as he deals with an injured back and faces the third-ranked pass defense of the San Francisco 49ers.

Chargers | Philip Rivers practices in full

Thu, 18 Dec 2014 12:41:59 -0800

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (chest, back) fully participated in practice Thursday, Dec. 18.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like Rivers will be able to play in Week 16 despite the injuries. Rivers probably will not be at full strength during the game and is facing a tough San Francisco 49ers defense, so he may not be the best option on FantasyScore at $6,600.

Chargers | Philip Rivers practicing

Thu, 18 Dec 2014 10:48:56 -0800

Updating previous reports, San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (back) is participating in practice Thursday, Dec. 18.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers will cost $6,600 in FantasyScore this week, but he may be a risky start against the San Francisco 49ers, especially if he is not at full strength.

Chargers | Philip Rivers has legit back injury

Thu, 18 Dec 2014 06:17:54 -0800

Updating previous reports, San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (back) is battling a back injury that is more severe than the team has acknowledged, according to a league source. Rivers' back injury was quietly added to San Diego's injury report last week, to go along with the rib injury he has been battling for weeks. By now, Rivers' rib injuries are improved, making his back injury the significant issue, a league source said.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers ($6,600; 13.2% of your cap) may be too risky to start on FantasyScore against the San Francisco 49ers.

Chargers | Philip Rivers says he's playing

Wed, 17 Dec 2014 14:56:12 -0800

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (chest, back) took part in a walkthrough Wednesday, Dec. 17, but didn't take part in practice, but he fully expects to play in Week 16 against the San Francisco 49ers. "At this point in the week I think there's no doubt," Rivers said. TE Antonio Gates said Rivers has been dealing with a "very severe rib injury" in mid-November. Rivers has started 142 straight games, and he thinks sitting out practice this week will help him play this weekend.

Fantasy Tip: Between the fact that Rivers ($6,600) is fighting through injuries and the 49ers are stingy against quarterbacks this year, avoiding him this weekend at FantasyScore would be the wise thing to do. Rivers also has lost one of his favorite targets in Keenan Allen (collarbone).

Chargers | Philip Rivers to play through injury?

Wed, 17 Dec 2014 13:09:40 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (back, chest) will try to play through injuries this week with a playoff spot on the line.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers did not practice today but has already said he should be good to go on Sunday. He'll still be a risky option on FantasyScore at $6,600 against a top pass defense in the San Francisco 49ers.

Chargers | Philip Rivers not practicing

Wed, 17 Dec 2014 11:31:31 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (undisclosed) was not present during practice Wednesday, Dec. 17.

Fantasy Tip: It is not known why Rivers is not at practice, so owners should monitor the situation. Rivers costs $6,600 on FantasyScore but may not be the best option since he will be facing a tough San Francisco 49ers defense.

Chargers | Philip Rivers good to go

Tue, 16 Dec 2014 13:37:17 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (back, chest) said he's in good health and ready to play against the San Francisco 49ers this week.

Fantasy Tip: The 49ers have been one of the better defenses against quarterbacks this year, so getting Rivers at $6,600 on FantasyScore might be a little much, especially considering he won't have his top receiver, Keenan Allen, to throw to this week.

Chargers | Philip Rivers struggling of late

Tue, 16 Dec 2014 13:30:06 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers has completed 66.8 percent of his passes for 1,426 yards, seven touchdowns and eight interceptions for a passer rating of 81.2 in the last six games. In the first eight weeks of the season, he had a 68.3 completion rate for 2,213 yards, 20 touchdowns and just five interceptions. Rivers said the team has been playing much better defenses lately, and his receivers haven't gotten separation as often. He also hasn't moved around well in the pocket with chest and back injuries taking their toll.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers could use a break, and he'll likely get one while facing the reeling San Francisco 49ers this weekend. Although SF has held their own pretty much all year against opposing QBs, Rivers should have more room to throw than in recent weeks. However, losing his favorite receiver, Keenan Allen, will keep his ceiling limited for FantasyScore owners. Rivers costs $6,600 in Week 16.

Thu, 11 Dec 2014 14:17:51 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (chest) practiced fully Thursday, Dec. 11.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers has a nice draw on Sunday facing the Denver Broncos in what could very well be a shootout. His price of $6,900 on FantasyScore is an attractive option.

Wed, 10 Dec 2014 13:25:49 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (chest) participated fully in practice Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers ($6,900, 13.8%) should be good to go in a favorable matchup with the Denver Broncos, who have been thrown against the most of any defense in the league and are in the bottom five in passing touchdowns allowed.

Chargers | Philip Rivers probable

Fri, 05 Dec 2014 14:46:36 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (chest) fully participated in practice Friday, Dec. 5, and is probable for Week 14.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers will cost $6,900 in FantasyScore this week. Rivers had a huge game a week ago, but temper your expectations if you decide you add him to your lineup, as he has a much tougher matchup against the New England Patriots.

Chargers | Philip Rivers a full go

Thu, 04 Dec 2014 15:16:46 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (chest) practiced in full Thursday, Dec. 4, after not being on the injury report at all Wednesday, Dec. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers ($6,900) had a huge performance last week against the Baltimore Ravens, but he'll face a much more disciplined and nasty secondary in the New England Patriots in Week 14. Temper your expectations a tad if you elect to go with Rivers as your FantasyScore QB.

Chargers | Philip Rivers good against blitz

Tue, 02 Dec 2014 11:50:41 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers has been good all season long against blitzes, and the same rung true in the team's Week 13 win over the Baltimore Ravens. Rivers was 14-for-16 for 117 yards and two touchdowns against at least fiver rushers against the Ravens, according to ESPN Stats & Information. He was 12-for-13 for 172 yards and two touchdowns when Baltimore sent at least one defensive back as a pass rusher. Rivers also went 8-for-8 for 156 yards on third down in the game, and no quarterback has a higher completion percentage than him at 67.5 percent this year.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers had been a bit shaky before last weekend after coming out of the team's bye, but he's back on track now. The Bolts face the New England Patriots in Week 14 at home. The Pats secondary is much-improved, so temper your expectations a bit on Rivers ($6,900) at FantasyScore.

Chargers | Philip Rivers expected to play

Fri, 21 Nov 2014 12:49:56 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (chest) fully participated in practice Friday, Nov. 21, and is listed as probable for Week 12.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers should be able to play in Week 12 despite the injury. He costs $6,800 on FantasyScore but will be facing a St. Louis Rams defense that have kept opposing quarterbacks from putting up big fantasy numbers over the last four weeks. Owners could consider spending a little extra money for a better option.

Chargers | Philip Rivers a full participant

Thu, 20 Nov 2014 15:11:03 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (chest) practiced in full for the second straight day Thursday, Nov. 20.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers doesn't appear to be in any danger of missing Week 12's matchup against the St. Louis Rams. However, you may want to look elsewhere for your FantasyScore QB, since the Rams are allowing an average of just 13.28 points to QBs in the last four weeks.

Chargers | Philip Rivers not receiving treatment

Mon, 17 Nov 2014 13:41:58 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (rib) is not receiving treatment on the rib injury he suffered in Week 11, according to head coach Mike McCoy.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers should be able to play in Week 12 against the St. Louis Rams unless he suffers a setback during the week. Be careful if considering Rivers for your FantasyScore lineup. He's banged up, and the Rams have been much tougher on quarterbacks recently.

Chargers | Philip Rivers battling rib injury

Sun, 16 Nov 2014 19:34:43 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (ribs) suffered a rib injury in the fourth quarter of the Week 11 game against the Oakland Raiders. TE Antonio Gates said Sunday, Nov. 16, Rivers has been playing with a severe rib injury, but "he's been toughing it out these last three or four weeks." Rivers downplayed the situation, and said he is no more banged up than any other quarterback in the league.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers and the San Diego offense has nosedived in recent weeks, and this is a good explanation as to why. FantasyScore owners might want to shy away from Rivers until he starts to look healthier.

Chargers | Philip Rivers injures hand

Sun, 02 Nov 2014 12:41:31 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (hand) suffered a hand injury in Week 9 and is considered questionable to return.

Fantasy Tip: The severity of the injury is not known since Rivers left when the Chargers were down a significant margin. Owners likely will know more about the injury after the game. Kellen Clemens would start if Rivers misses time but likely would not have a lot of fantasy value.

Chargers | Philip Rivers extends streak

Mon, 20 Oct 2014 08:59:40 -0700

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers extended his team record to 27 straight games with at least one touchdown pass in the team's Week 7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. He was 17-for-31 for 205 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against the Chiefs.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers and the Chargers will likely be forced to pass often in their Week 8 matchup against the Denver Broncos Thursday night, making him a fine play for your FantasyScore lineups.

Chargers | Philip Rivers amasses records

Mon, 29 Sep 2014 02:38:54 -0700

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers posted a 130.0 passer rating courtesy of his 377 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions on 29 of 39 passing Sunday, Sept. 29. Rivers eclipsed the 120.0 barrier for the third consecutive game, which ties the longest stretch of his career. It also marked the third straight game he completed more than 72 percent of his passes, which is one shy of his personal best, and he eclipsed 300 yards for the 35th time in his career. Rivers set a new team record by throwing a touchdown pass in his 24th straight game.

Fantasy Tip: It was Jacksonville the Chargers faced on Sunday, but there is no question Rivers is red-hot at the moment and should be in your lineup. He will have a halo effect on players like WR Eddie Royal and TE Antonio Gates.

Mon, 15 Sep 2014 10:39:27 -0700

San Diego Chargers WR Keenan Allen, who caught five passes for 55 yards in the team's Week 2 win over the Seattle Seahawks, called Seahawks CB Richard Sherman "just a normal guy." QB Philip Rivers was 5-for-5 for 60 yards while throwing to receivers that Sherman was covering.

Chargers | Philip Rivers accomplishes rarity

Sun, 14 Sep 2014 16:48:43 -0700

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers completed 28 of his 37 pass attempts for 284 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 2 win against the Seattle Seahawks. He is the first opposing quarterback since Week 8 of the 2012 (Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford) to throw for three or more touchdown passes against Seattle.

Chargers | Philip Rivers won't avoid Richard Sherman

Fri, 12 Sep 2014 10:07:17 -0700

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers doesn't plan on avoiding Seattle Seahawks CB Richard Sherman in Week 2. In Week 1, Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers didn't target Sherman's side of the field once. "(Sherman) is a great corner. But at the same time, I think you have to be smart. It's not one of the deals that you want to go after him by any means. But our approach is not going to be to completely eliminate (Sherman) and not throw over there any," Rivers said.

Fantasy Tip: Sherman figures to be matched up mostly against Malcom Floyd Sunday, but the Bolts often move their receivers around, so he could cover Keenan Allen on occasion, too. Neither SD receiver is intriguing at FantasyScore this weekend, but Allen ($6,100; 12.2% of cap) is probably your better bet for catches.

Chargers | Frank Reich's offense will feature a lot of no-huddle

Fri, 06 Jun 2014 14:07:52 -0700

San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Frank Reich will utilize the no-huddle offense a lot in 2014, and he may even implement the famed "K-gun" system from his time backing up retired Buffalo Bills QB Jim Kelly. Chargers QB Philip Rivers will run a fast-paced passing attack that spreads the ball and attempts to gas defenses to create big plays. He is expected to have more freedom than ever before to make pre-snap adjustments.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers won the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year Award in 2013 for his strong season, and he is relatively undervalued in early 2014 fantasy football drafts. The veteran passer should come off the board in the middle rounds as a low-end QB1.

Chargers | Philip Rivers has trust in Vincent Brown

Tue, 29 Oct 2013 16:56:32 -0700

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers has been able to trust WR Vincent Brown on contested catches this season. "I've thrown Vincent Brown a bunch of those balls," Rivers said. "It's trusting that he's going to come in there, and he's going to go up high and make a good, tough, catch." Brown is tied for third on the team with 26 catches this year.

Fantasy Tip: Brown's precise route-running skills have endeared him to Rivers, and he's the QB's go-to guy when a tough catch is needed. Brown isn't putting up consistent numbers week in and week out, though, making him a frustrating lineup decision. He's more valuable in standard formats as a flex player.

Raiders | Terrelle Pryor making great strides

Wed, 09 Oct 2013 20:59:33 -0700

Oakland Raiders QB Terrelle Pryor has posted a passer rating of 97.6, which ranks behind only Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning, Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo, San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers, New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees, Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers and Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan. His completion percentage of 68.3 trails only Manning, Rivers, Romo, Brees and Ryan, and he has a 72.7 completion percentage in the pocket, which is fourth-best in the NFL. "His mechanics have really improved," head coach Dennis Allen said Wednesday, Oct. 9. "He's got a good presence in the pocket, yet can get out and make plays. He's always been a great athlete, but he's getting better as a quarterback."

Fantasy Tip: Pryor has emerged as a low-end No. 1 fantasy option in most leagues of 12 or more teams. He has surprised more than any other fantasy quarterback to this point, as far as success. There are plenty who have surprised by being disappointing.

Chargers | Philip Rivers continues to shine

Mon, 07 Oct 2013 10:43:00 -0700

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers topped 400 yards passing for the third time in five games this season in Week 5 against the Oakland Raiders. He completed more than 73 percent of his throws for the fourth straight week despite throwing three interceptions.

Fantasy Tip: Two of Rivers' picks came late in the game and were balls he forced into the secondary. It has become clear that Rivers is a solid low-end QB1 play in most weeks in a new-look offense that allows him to change the play at the line of scrimmage. As long as he continues to get rid of the ball quickly and the offensive line holds up, he looks like a safe weekly starter.

Since halftime in Week 1, the opposing quarterback has completed 72 percent of their passes for 695 yards, five touchdowns and one interception.

Chargers | Philip Rivers more comfortable in offense

Tue, 17 Sep 2013 10:56:51 -0700

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers is much more comfortable in head coach Mike McCoy's and offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt's offense this year, an offense similar to what he ran in college that involved shorter passes and fewer deep backs. The team is hurrying up their offense at times and going with a no huddle, and it gives Rivers the freedom to change plays at the line of scrimmage as he sees fit. The 539 yards of total offense for San Diego in Week 2 against the Philadelphia Eagles was their most since 1985. "Philip Rivers just seemed to know everything we were throwing at him," Eagles CB Cary Williams told reporters after the game. "He was calling things out. He caught us in bad situations. Used those matchups against us and was able to capitalize. He kind of recognized what we were doing to a degree. We weren't able to disguise the way we wanted to. He just found the matchups. Philip Rivers is a great quarterback."

Fantasy Tip: Rivers appears much more comfortable after the first two games. He's always been a bright football mind, and now that he's been given the ability to change plays as he reads the defense, he's become much more effective. He's taken a liking to Eddie Royal, too. Royal should now be owned in all leagues, and Rivers should be a solid QB2 moving forward.

Reed underwent arthroscopic hip surgery in April and received injections two weeks ago to speed his recovery. S Shiloh Keo will start in his place.

Fantasy Tip: This is good news for Philip Rivers and the Chargers' aerial attack in Week 1. Vincent Brown should be a good play as the team's No. 1 wideout.

Chargers | Philip Rivers says his mechanics do not need fixing

Wed, 28 Aug 2013 19:54:23 -0700

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers does not believe his mechanics need to be corrected and admitted to being irritated by all of the criticism surrounding the notion.

"The thing that's gotten to me this offseason is, 'Who's going to fix Philip?'" Rivers said. "That phrase, I almost laugh it off. That drives me nuts, really. There's no question I'm responsible for some of the plays and some of the games we haven't won. I'm not going to shy away from that. But we can go sit in there and watch a lot of tape from last year, and I'll ask you, 'What do you want to fix?' It's just about eliminating some of the bad plays."

Fantasy Tip: Rivers has committed 47 turnovers in the past two seasons but should improve with the team's emphasis on the short-passing game and an improved offensive line. He's a midrange backup with the potential to warrant starting consideration if he gets back on track.

"He's an easy guy to throw the ball to," Rivers said. "He's so smooth, so strong to the ball, so sharp. ... If he can be out there on a consistent basis, which obviously if he is healthy he will be, people are going to say, 'Shoot, he's one of the staples of (their) offense.'"

Chargers | Backup QB battle heating up

Fri, 09 Aug 2013 20:19:33 -0700

San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said the battle for the primary backup job behind QB Philip Rivers is an open competition between QBs Brad Sorensen and Charlie Whitehurst. "Like we said before, the depth chart is what it is today. We're just letting it go. Everyone's going to get an opportunity and we have a lot of time left to make all of those decisions," McCoy said.

Fantasy Tip: Sorensen led the team on its only touchdown drive, while Whitehurst tossed a pair of interceptions. Either way, unless Rivers goes down with a long-term injury, neither of these guys is likely to sniff the field much.

Chargers | Speeding up playcalling

Thu, 08 Aug 2013 16:44:16 -0700

The San Diego Chargers and head coach Mike McCoy are speeding up the playcalling this season, and the calls will go straight from a coach to QB Philip Rivers, without a middleman. "It gets in quicker," McCoy said. "It gives Philip more time." As a result, theoretically, the team will be less prone to delay of game penalties and rushed snaps. Offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt will be the main play caller.

Fantasy Tip: This is just another minor adjustment by the new coaching staff to make things easier on Rivers as he operates a changed offensive strategy. More short-range passes designed to get the ball out of Rivers' hand quicker should make him more effective in the long run. He could be a very nice surprise as a solid QB2 this year.
