Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers completed 20 of his 36 pass attempts for 227 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in a 30-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs Saturday, Dec. 16.

Chargers | Philip Rivers moving up all-time list

Wed, 13 Dec 2017 19:55:06 -0800

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers passed retired QB Warren Moon for ninth on the NFL's all-time passing yards list. He has now thrown for 49,444 yards after his performance in the team's Week 14 win Sunday, Dec. 10, opposite the Washington Redskins.

Fantasy Tip: Even at age 36, Rivers is having another terrific fantasy season and he's on pace to hit the 4,000-yard plateau for the ninth time in his career. Additionally, he also currently owns his highest QB Rating (97.2) since 2013. Year in and year out, the former fourth-overall draft pick is simply one of the most underrated options to deploy at quarterback in all of fantasy.

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers (concussion) fully participated in practice Friday, Nov. 17, and is listed as questionable for Week 11.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers appears to have a good chance to play as long as he does not suffer a setback over the next few days. He would be facing a solid Buffalo Bills defense but could still be a low-end No. 1 quarterback in deeper leagues.

Chargers | Philip Rivers remains limited, could play

Thu, 16 Nov 2017 13:03:58 -0800

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers (concussion) has not cleared the concussion protocol and was limited in practice Thursday, Nov. 16. Head coach Anthony Lynn believes Rivers will play this weekend, but that decision is up to the team doctors.

Fantasy Tip: If Rivers plays he'll be greeted by a Buffalo Bills pass defense that has been better than average in 2017. The veteran quarterback is a fringe QB1 if active, but have a backup plan in place in case he's a no go.

Chargers | Philip Rivers reaches historic plateau

Wed, 15 Nov 2017 19:30:01 -0800

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers became the eighth quarterback in NFL history with 4,000 career completions after his performance in Week 10 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. In the process, he also passed retired QB Warren Moon for eighth on the all-time list.

Fantasy Tip: It's another notch on the belt of what has been a terrific career for the 14-year veteran, but unfortunately for his owners, this hasn't been the typical Rivers season. As it stands, the 35-year-old owns an 87.8 QB Rating, which is his lowest since 2007. Furthermore, he's averaging just over 250 passing yards per contest, his fewest in five years. Of course, with his consecutive games streak in danger due to injury, owners have to wait before deciding to deploy him in Week 11.

Chargers | Philip Rivers limited Wednesday

Wed, 15 Nov 2017 13:09:16 -0800

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers (concussion) put in a limited practice Wednesday, Nov. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Whether or not Rivers plays this week could come down to a game-time decision. It is promising, though, that he practiced at all after suffering a concussion in Week 10. Either way, have a plan B ready in case Rivers can't go, especially since he would be in a tough matchup against the Minnesota Vikings anyway.

Wed, 15 Nov 2017 06:30:57 -0800

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers (concussion) has given encouraging signs on his progress through the concussion protocol, according to sources.

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers (concussion) is going through the concussion protocol, according to head coach Anthony Lynn.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor the situation to see if Rivers can participate in practice at some point this week. He would be facing a solid Buffalo Bills defense if he is able to play but could be a low-end No. 1 quarterback in some deeper leagues.

Chargers | Disappointing outing for Philip Rivers

Sun, 29 Oct 2017 18:12:08 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers completed 17 of his 30 passes for 212 yards, a touchdown and an interception in a 21-13 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 8.

Fantasy Tip: Facing a New England secondary that had been shredded most of the year, Rivers posted a lackluster final line. He still delivers the occasional QB1 effort, but his value is matchup dependent.

Chargers | Philip Rivers poised for big game?

Sat, 28 Oct 2017 21:08:53 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers faces the New England Patriots in Week 8, and the Patriots have allowed a league-high 15 touchdown passes and have allowed six of their seven opposing quarterbacks to throw for more than 300 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers could be called on even more than usual with Melvin Gordon nursing a foot injury, and the friendly matchup locks him in as a QB1.

Chargers | Philip Rivers tosses pair of TDs

Sun, 22 Oct 2017 20:20:16 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers completed 15 of his 26 pass attempts for 183 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 7 against the Denver Broncos.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers didn't throw for a high yardage total, but he also didn't turn it over and was sacked just three times, getting pretty decent protection along the way. He'll look to keep it rolling in Week 8 against a New England Patriots pass defense which has been very shaky up until Week 7.

Chargers | Philip Rivers, Antonio Gates nearing history

Tue, 17 Oct 2017 20:55:55 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers' next touchdown pass to TE Antonio Gates will be their 86th as a pair, breaking their tie with former San Francisco 49ers greats and Hall-of-Famers Steve Young and Jerry Rice for second-place on the all-time list.

Fantasy Tip: Obviously, Rivers is the only one of the two worth playing in fantasy these days, as Gates has been seeing fewer snaps and running fewer routes than Hunter Henry in recent weeks. If Week 1 was any indication, their chances of passing Young and Rice aren't very good as Denver held Gates to 17 scoreless yards.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon finding a rhythm

Thu, 12 Oct 2017 20:09:49 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon is starting to find a rhythm running the football and is seeing the running lanes better, according to QB Philip Rivers.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon is coming off his best game of the season, and he remains one of the true every-down backs in the game today. His huge workload makes him a RB1 heading into a Week 6 matchup with the Oakland Raiders.

Chargers | Philip Rivers tosses three TDs

Sun, 08 Oct 2017 16:59:39 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers completed just 21 of his 44 pass attempts for 258 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in the Week 5 game against the New York Giants. He passed Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton for 10th on the NFL's all-time career passing yardage list.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers had his worst completion percent (47.7) of the season, but he tied a season high with the three scoring strikes and the Bolts picked up their first win, too. He'll look to carry over the momentum into Week 6 in Oakland against a mediocre Raiders pass defense.

Chargers | Philip Rivers big in loss

Sun, 01 Oct 2017 19:18:26 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers completed 22 of his 38 passes for 347 yards and two touchdowns in a 26-24 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday, Oct. 1.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers bounced back from a three-interception outing in Week 3, and he has put up decent numbers despite the Chargers' 0-4 start. He can provide QB1 numbers against the right matchups, but a showdown with the solid defense of the New York Giants in Week 5 pushes him into QB2 territory.

Chargers | Philip Rivers picked off three times

Sun, 24 Sep 2017 18:28:09 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers completed 20 of his 40 pass attempts for 237 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions in the Week 3 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers had a nightmare outing, as he was picked three times, sacked twice and he had another potential interception overturned by instant replay. He posted a dismal 37.2 quarterback rating in the loss. Rivers now has four touchdowns and four interceptions through his first three games, all losses. He'll look to rebound in Week 4 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers threw for three touchdown passes and 192 yards in a 24-21 loss to the Denver Broncos on Monday, Sept. 11.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers completed two-thirds of his passes, and only a missed field goal prevented the Chargers from tying the score and sending the game to overtime. Rivers showed his ability to lead comeback drives and find the open man. He ranks as a decent QB1 option, especially in weaker matchups.

Sat, 26 Aug 2017 21:26:49 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers completed all six of his pass attempts for 85 yards and a touchdown in a 21-19 preseason win over the Los Angeles Rams Saturday, Aug. 26.

Fantasy Tip: Injuries decimated the offense last year, but don't write off Rivers just yet. He could be a sneaky QB1 option still on the board later in drafts.

Chargers | Philip Rivers doesn't play

Sun, 20 Aug 2017 20:41:41 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers was was held out of the preseason game against the New Orleans Saints Sunday, Aug. 20. QB Kellen Clemens started and completed 10 of his 17 pass attempts for 99 yards and rushed three times for 26 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers is coming off a down year by his standards, but if his receivers and offensive line can stay somewhat healthy, he could bounce back. He could be a great value as a low-end QB1.

Chargers | Philip Rivers commuting 71 miles every day

Mon, 31 Jul 2017 05:45:34 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers is commuting 71 miles each way to training camp from his northeast San Diego home every day. He has a driver so he can do work in the car. Head coach Anthony Lynn expressed some concerns, but Rivers said he wouldn't be rushing out of the facility every day.

Fantasy Tip: It's an unusual setup for a quarterback, but it should be a nonfactor. He had a down year last season with the most interceptions of his career (21), and his 60.4 percent completion rate was the second-lowest figure since he became a starter. He's on the fringe of the QB1 landscape.

Chargers | Philip Rivers not close to retiring

Wed, 14 Jun 2017 17:11:13 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers said he believes he can play a few more seasons before he considers retirement.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers has thrown for at least 4,000 yards in eight of his last nine seasons and at least 30 touchdowns in three of the last four season. He did struggle with 21 interceptions in 2016 but should reduce that number this season. Rivers have a solid group of pass catchers to work with on offense and can be considered a low-end No. 1 quarterback in fantasy leagues.

Chargers | Anthony Lynn believes in Philip Rivers

Thu, 04 May 2017 10:22:26 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers has started 176 consecutive games, and head coach Anthony Lynn believes he has another three or four productive years ahead of him. The Chargers did not a draft a quarterback because Lynn still has high expectations for his veteran quarterback. "We definitely think Philip can still play," Lynn said. "Whoever we drafted was going to have to come in and sit for a while because I think Philip is going to continue to play at a high level."

Fantasy Tip: Rivers has been the most consistent quarterback over the last decade aside from Drew Brees. In fact, he hasn't finished outside of QB1 territory since 2007 and hasn't missed a game since 2005. Rivers isn't a sexy pick, but he gets the job done. You can draft him late, too.

Chargers | Philip Rivers on top of dubious list

Thu, 09 Feb 2017 17:42:34 -0800

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers has the most touchdowns of any quarterback in NFL history that has never appeared in a Super Bowl. He's thrown 314 touchdown passes, placing him in first on the list, with former NFL QB Warren Moon closest behind with 291. Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer is third, having recorded 285 passing touchdowns, while former NFL QB Vinny Testaverde is fourth with 275.

Fantasy Tip: The Chargers have had a few really good teams with Rivers under center, but just quite haven't been able to get over the hump during his long tenure with the franchise. It shouldn't be something that puts Rivers in a negative light, as the 35-year-old has had a sensational career since being drafted fourth overall in 2004. In fact, he's posted a QB rating of 88 or better in each of the last nine years. As usual, he'll enter 2017 with QB1 potential.

Chargers | Philip Rivers denies trade request

Wed, 18 Jan 2017 09:52:20 -0800

Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers refuted reports Tuesday, Jan. 17, that claimed he asked for a trade or wanted to be dealt, specifically to the San Francisco 49ers. Rivers has a no-trade clause in his contract.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers should enter 2017's fantasy draft season as a sound QB2. While he doesn't offer much upside for a monster season, the veteran is capable of turning in a few huge games during the course of the year as a matchup play.

Chargers | Philip Rivers under the radar

Wed, 04 Jan 2017 15:54:14 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers achieved one of the most underappreciated seasons of the year, throwing for 4,390 yards and 33 touchdowns -- ranked fifth and fourth, respectively, among quarterbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers has seemingly been underrated throughout his career, but he has made his mark in the fantasy realm. He keeps putting up QB1 numbers despite a plethora of injuries to his offensive counterparts. He should be drafted as a QB1 again in 2017.

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers completed 24 of his 47 pass attempts for 321 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 16 game against the Cleveland Browns.

Chargers | Philip Rivers enjoys facing Oakland

Tue, 13 Dec 2016 16:44:13 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers has played in 20 career games opposite the Oakland Raiders, completing 409 of 650 passes (62.9 percent) for 4,835 yards with 31 touchdowns versus 15 interceptions, resulting in a 91.8 QB rating. The Chargers are 14-6 in those 20 games.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers is normally in the QB1 discussion, but he might deserve a little extra consideration for fantasy owners in the postseason this weekend, as he's put up some impressive numbers against the division rival Raiders. Furthermore, Oakland's defense has allowed 20 or more points in six straight contests. He's definitely someone to ponder for those who don't have their starting quarterback permanently installed.

Chargers | Philip Rivers has up and down game

Sun, 11 Dec 2016 14:25:51 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers went 21-for-39 for 236 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions against the Carolina Panthers in Week 14.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers lost his starting running back early in the game, so he had to throw a lot during the game. He has thrown 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions over the last four games and had at least 30 pass attempts in three of those games. Rivers has plenty of weapons to work with on offense but can be a low-end No. 1 quarterback against the Oakland Raiders in Week 15.

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers completed 23 of his 44 pass attempts for 326 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions in the Week 10 game against the Miami Dolphins. His pick-six in the fourth quarter cost the team a victory. The four interceptions tied a career high.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers put up good numbers for his fantasy owners, but his four turnovers took off a little luster from an otherwise solid stat line. Fantasy owners need to go another way in Week 11 with the Bolts on a bye.

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers completed 20 of his 47 pass attempts for 267 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in the Week 8 game against the Denver Broncos.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers has thrown for 267 or more yards in five of his past six games, and he has at least one touchdown pass in each of the past five, and seven of eight games this season. He remains a decent low-end QB1 in most fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams.

Fantasy Tip: Imagine if Rivers actually had an NFL-caliber cadre of receivers for a full season. He remains a decent low-end QB1 in fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams. He faces a difficult matchup in Week 8 in Denver.

Chargers | Philip Rivers loves facing Cover 3

Sat, 22 Oct 2016 11:15:12 -0700

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers has faced Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll or his protégé - Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley - seven times since 2013. In the four regular-season matchups against those teams (three against Bradley), Rivers has posted a passer rate of 110.0 each time and not thrown an interception.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers faces another Carroll disciple in Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn in Week 7 and figures to have similar success against a defense giving up an average of 297.7 passing yards and 2.3 touchdowns to quarterbacks this season. Chargers-Falcons definitely has shootout potential, so owners would be wise to invest in Rivers wherever possible.

Sat, 24 Sep 2016 18:49:44 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Hunter Henry is a "tremendous receiver," according to head coach Ken Whisenhunt, and QB Philip Rivers said Henry's "catches are coming."

Mon, 19 Sep 2016 00:10:19 -0700

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers threw for four touchdown passes during his team's 38-14 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, Sept. 18.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers has always mastered the Jaguars defense, but this is good news for a team that could sure use it. He remains a solid QB1 option moving forward and is also worth the money in two-QB leagues.

Chargers | Tyrell Williams poised to break out?

Sat, 17 Sep 2016 09:23:24 -0700

San Diego Chargers WR Tyrell Williams is "the prototypical big target that (QB) Philip Rivers likes to throw to", according to ESPN's Eric Williams.

Fantasy Tip: Others may be looking for Williams to take over the Keenan Allen role following his season-ending injury, but the Chargers appear to have other ideas. Travis Benjamin appeared to move into that role in the second half of Week 1 and should share some of those responsibilities with Dontrelle Inman. Williams is definitely worth adding, but his initial role may be the same one Benjamin and Malcom Floyd had before him. Williams should be considered a high-upside WR5 at the moment.

Chargers | Philip Rivers has thrived versus Jaguars

Fri, 16 Sep 2016 11:18:45 -0700

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers is a combined 80-of-108 for 962 yards and eight touchdowns with no interceptions against the Jacksonville Jaguars - their Week 2 opponent - over the last three seasons.

Fantasy Tip: Without Keenan Allen last year, Rivers lit up the Jaguars for 300 yards and four touchdowns in what was his most productive fantasy day of the season. In their 2014 meeting, the 34-year-old signal-caller exploded for 377 and three, respectively. Jacksonville has improved defensively this season, but Rivers remains a low-end QB1 in this matchup even with Allen out for the rest of the season.

San Diego Chargers WR Keenan Allen (knee) will likely need to be replaced by committee in the opinion of QB Philip Rivers after the wideout reportedly tore the ACL in his right knee in a Week 1 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Last season, the Chargers averaged 24 points with Allen in the lineup before a lacerated kidney that ended his year. After his exit, San Diego averaged 16 points the rest of the season.

Fantasy Tip: The good news - if there is any - is the Chargers have more young and/or proven talent at receiver in 2016. There is some thought San Diego will bring back James Jones, who they cut during training camp, but owners can expect Travis Benjamin, Dontrelle Inman and Tyrell Williams to see more targets on a regular basis. Allen's injury should also lock Antonio Gates and Danny Woodhead into their respective TE1 and high-end RB2 designations in PPR leagues.

Chargers | Travis Benjamin adds new element

Fri, 09 Sep 2016 21:34:23 -0700

San Diego Chargers WR Travis Benjamin's ability to stretch the field should open up space for intermediate passing routes, and QB Philip Rivers said it took him a while to adjust to Benjamin's speed and realize he couldn't overthrow him on deep routes.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin won't be as consistent as Keenan Allen or Antonio Gates, but he should deliver his share of big plays and have an occasional big game. He is an all-or-nothing play in standard leagues and daily formats.

Chargers | Keenan Allen even faster?

Fri, 09 Sep 2016 19:54:35 -0700

San Diego Chargers WR Keenan Allen appears to be even faster this season, QB Philip Rivers said.

Fantasy Tip: Allen was on his way to a huge 2015 campaign before suffering a lacerated kidney, and he opens 2016 comfortably in the WR2 range.
