New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan publicly remained supportive of QB Geno Smith Monday, Sept. 29. He said he talked to the quarterback about his incident with yelling a profanity at a fan. "Unfortunately, I made the same mistake," Ryan said. "Obviously, it's something I regretted when I did it, and I know Geno feels the same way." Ryan said he is sticking with Smith, who has thrown at least one interception in 16 of his 20 career starts, despite the fact fans are clamoring for backup QB Michael Vick to get a chance.
Fantasy Tip: If you're in a fantasy league which uses two starting quarterbacks, it might not be a terrible idea to stash Vick. Smith has not helped himself with a slow start and plenty of mistakes, and it might only be a matter of time before Smith loses support.
Tue, 23 Sep 2014 11:10:25 -0700
New York Jets QB Michael Vick could be more involved in the offense moving forward, as QB Geno Smith has five turnovers in the first three games. "I'm never going to say no because I learned that from (the media)," head coach Rex Ryan said. However, Ryan still supports Smith and thinks he'll be fine. Smith looks more comfortable in offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg's system, but the results haven't followed.
Fantasy Tip: Smith would probably need a few more poor performances for a change to be made. Smith's up and down performances continue to make him a shaky weekly fantasy play.
Tue, 12 Aug 2014 09:02:23 -0700
New York Jets QB Geno Smith took 19 first-team snaps in the team's practice Tuesday, Aug. 12. QB Michael Vick took two first-team snaps.
Fantasy Tip: This is not a surprise as Smith continues to look like he has a solid lead in the quarterback competition.
Mon, 11 Aug 2014 09:31:54 -0700
New York Jets QB Michael Vick could be used this year in special packages as a change-of-pace quarterback, head coach Rex Ryan hinted. The team ran an entire period of Wildcat plays in practice Saturday, Aug. 9. Ryan has called Vick a "special talent" and has long been a fan of the Wildcat.
Fantasy Tip: Vick still has the speed and burst to be successful on the ground, but his extensive injury history doesn't bode well for him if he's used often to scramble. The Jets are probably mindful of this, as well, so we wouldn't expect them to plan for Vick to run often.
Fri, 08 Aug 2014 09:23:22 -0700
New York Jets QB Michael Vick went 3-for-6 for 17 yards and looked comfortable in the offense in the team's first preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts Thursday, Aug. 7. He led the first-team offense on an 80-yard scoring drive in his only work with the starters.
Fantasy Tip: Vick still has some bounce to his step, and it's a positive that he looked that comfortable in Marty Mornhinweg's system right off the bat. Still, he's the backup to Geno Smith unless Smith tanks in the remainder of the preseason.
Thu, 31 Jul 2014 09:25:10 -0700
New York Jets QB Michael Vick did not take any first-team snaps in practice Thursday, July 31.
Tue, 29 Jul 2014 14:42:03 -0700
New York Jets QB Geno Smith may be on a shorter leash this year with QB Michael Vick as his backup. Head coach Rex Ryan said the team's quarterback situation is ideal in that there is a veteran backup waiting who knows the system if Smith doesn't succeed.
Fantasy Tip: Smith undoubtedly had a tumultuous rookie season in 2013. He's not a reliable fantasy quarterback by any means at this point in his career. Smith and Vick should both be drafted as a backup.
Sat, 26 Jul 2014 19:02:32 -0700
New York Jets QB Geno Smith received 16 snaps with the first-team offense during practice Saturday, July 26, while QB Michael Vick received three snaps. Smith has received 42 starter reps in three practices while Vick has received 12 snaps.
Fri, 25 Jul 2014 18:19:34 -0700
Neither QB Geno Smith nor QB Michael Vick has an advantage in the competition for the starting quarterback job, according to general manager John Idzik.
Fri, 25 Jul 2014 09:32:24 -0700
New York Jets QB Geno Smith logged three-quarters of the first-team practice reps for the second straight day on Friday, July 25.
Fantasy Tip: He's holding off Michael Vick but still will have to show marked improvement as we inch closer to fantasy drafts. For those willing to throw a late stab on him, they could be rewarded with stronger week-to-week value, or simply will move on with little consequence.
Thu, 24 Jul 2014 09:23:37 -0700
New York Jets QB Geno Smith is receiving most of the first-team snaps in practice Thursday, July 24. Smith took 13 first-team snaps, and QB Michael Vick took four first-team snaps.
Fantasy Tip: Even if Smith wins this job, he is not a draft worthy option at this point. Consider him a QB3 at best.
Wed, 16 Jul 2014 11:03:10 -0700
New York Jets WR David Nelson said his teammates believe this is QB Geno Smith's team and that QB Michael Vick is seen as the backup. "For all of us, it's Geno's team," Nelson said. "And from what we've been told and what we've been working toward, it's Geno's team, and Mike's coming in to kind of (fill) a supporting role. If anything happens to Geno, we have a proven starter and a proven winner backing him up. That's the direction we're moving."
Mon, 14 Jul 2014 13:59:35 -0700
New York Jets QB Michael Vick will be the team's opening-day starter, former Jets WR Plaxico Burress predicted Monday, July 14.
Fri, 20 Jun 2014 15:23:17 -0700
New York Jets QB Michael Vick believes he was the pioneer of the move to fast, young quarterbacks in the NFL. "I was the guy who started it all," Vick said. "I revolutionized the game. I changed the way it was played in the NFL." Vick is currently the all-time leading rusher at the QB position with 5,857 yards.
Fantasy Tip: Vick still has some athletic juice left in the tank as he ages, but his athleticism and ability to scramble has made him extremely injury-prone, too. He seems resigned to a backup role to Geno Smith, however, at least to begin the 2014 season.
Wed, 18 Jun 2014 13:40:05 -0700
New York Jets QB Geno Smith will receive 70 to 75 percent of first-team repetitions in training camp, according to offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg.
Fantasy Tip: Smith's fantasy value is limited to a low-end QB2, while Michael Vick is best left to the waiver wire.
Wed, 18 Jun 2014 10:37:43 -0700
New York Jets QB Michael Vick struggled again during the Wednesday, June 18 practice, according to a source.
Fantasy Tip: The days of Vick being an elite fantasy quarterback are long gone. Unless he starts progressing and Geno Smith starts reeling, he's best left on the waivers this year.
Sun, 15 Jun 2014 09:26:46 -0700
The NFL's scheduled unrestricted free-agent quarterback class for 2015 features 14 players who will be at least 30 years of age, including Indianapolis Colts QB Matt Hasselbeck (39), St. Louis Rams QB Shaun Hill (35), Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (35), New York Jets QB Michael Vick (34), Cincinnati Bengals QB Jason Campbell (33), New Orleans Saints QB Luke McCown (33), Seattle Seahawks QB Tarvaris Jackson (32), Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (31), Oakland Raiders QB Trent Edwards (31), Chicago Bears QB Jordan Palmer (31), Detroit Lions QB Dan Orlovsky (31), Cleveland Browns QB Tyler Thigpen (31) and Miami Dolphins QB Matt Moore (30). Estranged Dallas Cowboys QB Kyle Orton (32) is also scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent, although he is reportedly leaning toward retirement.
Wed, 04 Jun 2014 16:29:35 -0700
New York Jets QB Michael Vick still considers himself a starting quarterback in the NFL, despite the fact that he's playing second fiddle to QB Geno Smith during organized team activities. "(Geno) knows I'm going to push him to the limit, and I want him to push me," Vick said. "There's going to be times where he's gonna have to pick me up, where I'm gonna have to pick him up. I'm always gonna be there for him, always gonna help him out, and I think he's done a great job."
Fantasy Tip: Unless something drastic changes during training camp, Smith will be the team's starter at QB entering Week 1. That could change once the season starts, but until then, Vick should be left to the waiver wire.
Thu, 29 May 2014 13:49:23 -0700
New York Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said there is "competition" between QBs Geno Smith and Michael Vick. "It may not be quite like the competition we had last year, where everything was 50-50," said Mornhinweg, alluding to the open competition between Smith and QB Mark Sanchez. "Mike has all that experienced banked. We're trying to continue the progress with Geno and then have Mike ready to go. It's just that simple, and Mike knows exactly what expectations and roles he has." Mornhinweg said earlier this offseason that Smith will receive more practice repetitions than Vick.
Fantasy Tip: Essentially, Mornhinweg is agreeing with Vick's statement last week that the team expects Smith to be the starting QB in Week 1. Vick will fill in if there is an injury or if Smith fails to impress early in the season. Consider Smith to be a very shaky QB2.
Wed, 28 May 2014 10:28:26 -0700
New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said the quarterback competition between QBs Geno Smith and Michael Vick is still open even though Vick believes Smith will be the starting quarterback.

Sun, 04 May 2014 15:58:52 -0700
New York Jets QB Michael Vick said QB Geno Smith will be the team's starting quarterback this upcoming season. "Ultimately our goal is to try to help Geno become the best quarterback that he can be. Myself and [QB Matt Simms] are all trying to put him in a position where he can get better from year one to year two," Vick said.
Mon, 21 Apr 2014 11:33:11 -0700
New York Jets QB Geno Smith said he believes he will be the starting quarterback this upcoming season even though the team added QB Michael Vick this offseason. He said he believes his play will improve with another year in the offense. Smith believes he will be able to learn from Vick because Vick has experience.
Sat, 19 Apr 2014 09:08:30 -0700
New York Jets RB Chris Johnson said the team told him QBs Michael Vick and Geno Smith will compete for the starting quarterback job during offseason workouts and training camp.
Tue, 25 Mar 2014 08:51:16 -0700
New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan indicated that QB Geno Smith will enter offseason practices in the early lead in the quarterback competition between QB Michael Vick, and Smith will work with the first team when practices start next month. However, Ryan isn't ruling out Vick as the Week 1 starter when the season comes. "It's going to be really interesting to watch that competition unfold. I've said this before -- Geno Smith is going to be hard to beat out," Ryan said. Ryan also said the team may have personnel packages that include both quarterbacks.
Fantasy Tip: With the Jets, there's no telling who will win the job here until much further down the road. Ryan has some loyalty toward Smith, but Vick has the experience in the league and can be more productive if he stays healthy. Either way, it's probably unlikely that you'll want to take the chance on either QB with a QB2 spot on your roster.
Sat, 22 Mar 2014 06:35:15 -0700
New York Jets QB Michael Vick said he would welcome Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson to the roster if a trade can be worked out. "[I]f there's an opportunity to get DeSean, I'm pretty sure the New York Jets fans would be in favor of that," Vick said. "But who knows, it takes a lot to make a trade happen [with] all of the intricacies of a contract. It's not for us as players to decide. But hopefully everything will work out for DeSean. If he ends up in New York, we'll be happy, just as happy as he will be. But who knows, you can't say."

Fri, 21 Mar 2014 15:33:07 -0700
The New York Jets will sign free-agent QB Michael Vick (Eagles) to an undisclosed deal, according to team and league sources.
Fantasy Tip: Vick will be given every chance in training camp to beat out Geno Smith as the team's starter. Vick, if he can stay healthy, remains intriguing, but only as a flier for a backup fantasy QB. There's no guarantee he even wins the job, though, and New York's weapons on offense are much less explosive and dynamic than what Vick was working with when he started in Philly.
Thu, 20 Mar 2014 14:03:50 -0700
If the New York Jets sign free-agent QB Michael Vick (Eagles), the team plans for him to compete for the starting quarterback job with QB Geno Smith, according to a team source. Vick has history with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg from their time with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Fantasy Tip: Vick is more experienced, albeit injury-prone, but if he is signed and wins the starting job, he'd be a flier as a fantasy backup. Smith's inconsistencies in his rookie season won't drastically improve if he's the starter just because Eric Decker is in town. Consider Smith undraftable in standard leagues if he opens Week 1 as the starter.
Wed, 19 Mar 2014 13:20:12 -0700
The New York Jets preference is for QB Geno Smith to be the team's Week 1 starter. If the team signs QB free-agent QB Michael Vick (Eagles), it would be for camp competition and insurance if Smith struggles or gets hurt.

One NFL personnel executive said teams undoubtedly will rate free-agent QB Michael Vick (Eagles) as the best of the free-agent class, and the executive said he would rate Vick as a mid-tier starting quarterback, somewhere between 13 and 16 out of 32.
Fantasy Tip: Vick is getting a little long in the tooth at 34 years old, but remember he has fresher legs due to a couple of years off for his involvement in the dog-fighting incident, and after having been relegated to a backup role last year in Philadelphia. If he does, in fact, land a starting gig, he might be worth a look as a No. 2 quarterback in most fantasy formats in 2014.
