Dodgers | Scott Kazmir bothered by hand discomfort

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 14:49:17 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Scott Kazmir (thumb) has felt minor discomfort where the thumb meets his left wrist since the end of the spring, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Kazmir, who said he suffered the injury while hitting, was dominant in his first start of the season, but the high-priced free-agent southpaw has surrendered 14 runs in 13 innings since. The discomfort on his throwing hand would certainly help explain his ineffectiveness over that span, although it should be noted he also showed signs of regression last September with the Houston Astros. Owners should keep Kazmir fixed to the bench until he can string together a pair of solid starts.

Dodgers | Scott Kazmir so-so in Colorado

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 22:50:21 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Scott Kazmir (thumb) allowed four earned runs, six hits and a walk over five innings in a no-decision Friday, April 22, against the Colorado Rockies. He left the clubhouse wearing a brace on his left hand after dealing with a thumb issue during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Kazmir's status for his upcoming start is up in the air. Fantasy owners haven't been getting a great return from the veteran anyway, so reserve him just to be on the safe side.

Dodgers | Scott Kazmir struggles vs. Giants

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 06:25:01 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Scott Kazmir allowed four runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out just three batters during the Dodgers' 4-3 loss the to San Francisco Giants Saturday, April 16.

Fantasy Tip: Kazmir battled an abdomen injury and decreased velocity this spring, and he has struggled to find a groove on the mound to start the season. The southpaw currently sits with a 6.43 ERA, a 1.43 WHIP, and he cannot be started with confidence in any fantasy format at this point. It is worth noting, through his first three outings, his average fastball velocity (91.3 mph) is comparable to his career average (91.5 mph), according to FanGraphs.com.

Giants | Brandon Crawford back in lineup

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 15:14:52 -0700

San Francisco Giants SS Brandon Crawford (hip) is back in the lineup Saturday, April 16, and will hit seventh against Los Angeles Dodgers SP Scott Kazmir. Giants OF Denard Span will return to his usual spot in center after a day of rest and bat leadoff.

Fantasy Tip: Crawford's hip issue is apparently a minor one, although the Giants sorely missed his Gold Glove defense in the opener on Friday when replacement Kelby Tomlinson was charged with two errors. Crawford is off to a slow start this season and should probably remain on benches in most leagues for the time being. It is worth noting Crawford was the only San Francisco regular not to get a hit when the Giants roughed up Kazmir last weekend.

Dodgers | Scott Kazmir dazzles in team debut

Tue, 05 Apr 2016 22:41:11 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Scott Kazmir tossed a gem Tuesday, April 5, in his team debut opposite the San Diego Padres. He recorded six shutout innings of one-hit baseball, striking out five and walking none.

Fantasy Tip: Kazmir simply had his way at Petco, and it was a very encouraging performance for the left-hander after some injury concerns at the end of spring training. If he can build off this season debut and remain on track, Kazmir would maintain relevancy as a useful asset in all mixed leagues. He might be a good buy-low candidate as a result.

Dodgers | Scott Kazmir exits start Saturday

Sat, 26 Mar 2016 16:05:03 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Scott Kazmir (abdominal) left his start with abdominal discomfort Saturday, March 26, against the Seattle Mariners after throwing 70 pitches over four innings. He stated he was fine and anticipates making his next start on Thursday, March 31.

Fantasy Tip: The 32-year-old southpaw hasn't been particularly sharp in his first spring with the Dodgers (7.71 ERA), although he has been averaging a strikeout per inning in his four exhibition outings. Kazmir is a decent but somewhat low-upside option near the end of most drafts.

Dodgers | L.A. not worried about Scott Kazmir

Tue, 15 Mar 2016 11:12:04 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers executive Andrew Friedman said the team isn't concerned about SP Scott Kazmir's decreased velocity in spring training, and Friedman is confident Kazmir is healthy.

Fantasy Tip: Kazmir's skills have eroded with age, and he was fortunate last year with inflated hit and strand rates. More decreased velocity this spring isn't a good sign. Even on a contending team and in a pitcher-friendly environment, Kazmir could be dead weight for your fantasy pitching staff.

Dodgers | Lack of mustard for Scott Kazmir

Mon, 14 Mar 2016 22:36:02 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Scott Kazmir had his fastball top out in the 86-89 mph range in a 'B' spring game Monday, March 14. He posted a 17.18 ERA in his first two Cactus League starts, prompting the team to use him in a more controlled environment in the 'B' game Monday. He allowed three hits in his first four batters faced, and in the third and fourth inning he abandoned his fastball for more breaking stuff. Kazmir said his "arm feels great," and he expects his velocity to increase as he builds arm strength for the season.

Fantasy Tip: On the surface, the team appears to have little concern with Kazmir's struggles, but on the inside there is probably quite a bit of worry, especially since he signed a lucrative three-year deal. Fantasy owners likely will want Kazmir to be someone else's problem this season.

Dodgers | Clayton Kershaw leads tentative rotation

Sun, 28 Feb 2016 13:41:45 -0800

The Los Angeles Dodgers appear to have set their starting rotation, with SP Clayton Kershaw leading the way. He would be followed by SP Scott Kazmir, SP Kenta Maeda, SP Brett Anderson and SP Alex Wood.

Fantasy Tip: The two K's, Kershaw and Kazmir, should go in the first half of most drafts. Kershaw will be among the top 10 selected in most drafts and could even be the first or second pitcher off the board.
