Red Sox | Hanley Ramirez committed to first base

Fri, 29 Jan 2016 13:04:40 -0800

Boston Red Sox OF Hanley Ramirez believes it will be "an easy" transition to first base, and the organization remains committed to him being the starting first baseman.

Fantasy Tip: Health has been the biggest hurdle for Ramirez, as he has missed substantial time in four of the past five seasons. He projects to be a polarizing player in 2016 drafts because he still owns excellent upside and did start 2015 with 40 runs, 15 home runs, 37 RBI and a .273/.322/.478 slash line through the first 65 games of the season. He is a worth a lottery ticket stab in the middle rounds of mixed leagues drafts.

Red Sox | Hanley Ramirez to report to camp early

Thu, 21 Jan 2016 17:15:49 -0800

Boston Red Sox 1B Hanley Ramirez is expected to report to spring training camp at the same time when pitchers and catchers are required to show up, according to manager John Farrell.

Fantasy Tip: Although Ramirez was a huge disappointment during his first year in the American League, he has enough upside to be worth selecting during the middle rounds of mixed fantasy leagues. It's hoped that moving from the outfield to first base will also allow him to remain healthy, after he missed significant playing time in four of the last five seasons.

Fri, 04 Dec 2015 10:34:53 -0800

Boston Red Sox OF Hanley Ramirez (shoulder) said his shoulder is fine, and he's committed to learning to play first base for the team.

Fantasy Tip: Ramirez lost a lot of value when he lost SS eligibility. He can be an upper echelon grab as a fantasy outfielder, but the signs of decline are starting to appear.

Red Sox | BOS may move Hanley Ramirez

Sun, 29 Nov 2015 13:25:45 -0800

Boston Red Sox OF Hanley Ramirez is the subject of trade talks, sources indicate. The Seattle Mariners, Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have been mentioned as possible targets, but the Red Sox would likely have to eat more than half of Ramirez's $68 million salary.

Fantasy Tip: Ramirez hasn't been an outright bust in Boston, but he's been a disappointment. The thinking is a change of scenery might help him, but he'll sink on a lot of draft boards because of past performance his tendency to get hurt.

Red Sox | Hanley Ramirez playing winter ball

Mon, 23 Nov 2015 14:51:23 -0800

Boston Red Sox OF Hanley Ramirez said he will play winter ball in the Domincan Republic during the offseason to help him adjust to playing first base.

Fantasy Tip: The move to first base has the potential to help Ramirez stay healthy in 2016, as he has missed significant time in four of the past five seasons. Expect Ramirez to be a polarizing player leading into the season, as while he has huge upside, he has also been a huge disappointment a number of times over the past half decade. With a clean bill of health, Ramirez has the potential to yield a huge return from a middle-round pick this spring.

Red Sox | Club asks Hanley Ramirez to shed weight

Thu, 12 Nov 2015 14:33:10 -0800

Boston Red Sox OF Hanley Ramirez was asked by the organization to lose weight to become "a little more athletic," according to 1B David Ortiz. "When it comes down to losing weight there's nothing wrong about that. I can tell you from my own experience, once I decided to take care of myself better and do things better, losing weight and other stuff, my career got longer. Hanley is still young. That's some good advice. That's the only way I can explain it. If you listen to what they have to say right now, his career is going to do nothing but get better because he's an amazing player, an unbelievable athlete and you have to be healthy to be a productive player."

Fantasy Tip: Ramirez has missed significant time in four of the past five seasons, which has made him a near annual fantasy disappointment. While you may be able to use that to your advantage next spring, Ramirez should still be viewed as nothing more than a risky No. 2 outfielder leading into the 2016 season. When healthy, he remains an excellent contributor in the fake game, but staying on the field is an issue. Stay tuned for updates throughout the offseason.

Red Sox | Rest helping Hanley Ramirez's shoulder

Mon, 09 Nov 2015 11:29:37 -0800

Boston Red Sox OF Hanley Ramirez (shoulder) said his shoulder has responded well to rest, according to president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski.

Fantasy Tip: 2015 was a story of two seasons for Ramirez. Before Wednesday, June 24, Ramirez sat with 41 runs, 15 home runs, 38 RBI and a .283/.330/.482 slash line through 273 plate appearances. It was all downhill after, though, as Ramirez finished with a .556 OPS and just 12 extra-base hits over his final 38 games of the season. He is a high-end contributor when healthy, but injuries have significantly curbed his fantasy returns in four of the past five seasons, and Ramirez enters his age-32 season in 2016. Stay tuned for updates, and view the outfielder as a risky No. 2 outfielder who could disappoint if reached for too early in drafts next spring.

Red Sox | Hanley Ramirez working out at first

Thu, 22 Oct 2015 17:42:06 -0700

Boston Red Sox 1B/OF Hanley Ramirez has started working out in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., as he makes the transition from the outfield to first base. The organization has asked him to lose some weight in order to become agile enough for the footwork required at the position.

Fantasy Tip: In his first year in the American League, Ramirez hit .249 with 19 home runs and 53 RBIs in 105 games. The season was marked by disappointment, as he hit just .183 with no home runs in 105 at-bats after the All-Star break and didn't play after Aug. 26. As a result, he is a strong bounce-back candidate who could slip in fantasy baseball drafts next season and may be worth the gamble in the middle rounds.

Red Sox | Hanley Ramirez moving to 1B

Tue, 13 Oct 2015 13:39:56 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Hanley Ramirez is expected to move to first base next season, according to president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. Dombrowski said Ramirez and his representatives are in favor of the move.

Fantasy Tip: Ramirez was used in the outfield this season but did deal with various injuries. He will not be playing this offseason, so he will have to learn how to play the position during spring training. Ramirez is a solid hitter when he is healthy and should be a solid option during drafts next season.

Red Sox | Hanley Ramirez finished for the season

Thu, 24 Sep 2015 14:49:04 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Hanley Ramirez (shoulder) has not responded well enough to treatment on his right shoulder inflammation and will not play again this season, according to interim manager Torey Lovullo. Lovullo noted surgery is considered unlikely at this point.

Fantasy Tip: Ramirez hasn't played since Wednesday, Aug. 26, and he finished the season with a disappointing .249/.291/.426 slash line with 59 runs, 19 home runs and 53 RBI over 105 games. Ramirez projects to be a polarizing fantasy player next spring, as it has been three years since he has played a full season. There will come a point in drafts where the reward outweighs the risk, though, and there is undeniable upside with Ramirez. Monitor his progress during the offseason.
