Rays | Richie Shaffer could be odd man out

Sun, 24 Jan 2016 09:04:14 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays INF Richie Shaffer could find himself in danger of not making the 25-man roster, with Steve Pearce, Logan Morrison and James Loney expected to share time at first base and designated hitter.

Fantasy Tip: The soon-to-be 25-year-old Shaffer batted just .189 last season but showed a promising amount of power, with three doubles and four home runs in 74 at-bats. Pearce and Morrison are expected to get the lion's share of the playing time and Loney could have all or part of the $8 million remaining on his contract eaten so that he can be moved to another team.

Rays | Tampa Bay sitting five regulars vs. Jays

Fri, 02 Oct 2015 15:12:48 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OFs Kevin Kiermaier and Steven Souza, 1B James Loney and C J.P. Arencibia are not in the starting lineup against Toronto Blue Jays SP Mark Buehrle Friday, Oct. 2.

Fantasy Tip: With the Tampa Bay lineup missing a number of key cogs, there isn't a lot to be excited about from the Rays Friday. FantasyScore players could target Evan Longoria ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) because of his .344/.395/.576 slash line against southpaws this season, but otherwise, you're likely betting fading the entire lineup.

Rays | James Loney, J.P. Arencibia sitting

Sun, 27 Sep 2015 08:03:29 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney and C J.P. Arencibia are not in the starting lineup against the Toronto Blue Jays Sunday, Sept. 27.

Fantasy Tip: Richie Shaffer ($3,600, 7.2% of cpa) and Luke Maile ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) draw into the lineup for Tampa, but they're nothing more than low-priced dice rolls at FantasyScore Sunday. You should likely aim higher. Make sure to avoid Loney ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) and Arencibia ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) in all fantasy formats, too.

Rays | James Loney out against Red Sox

Thu, 24 Sep 2015 13:32:16 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney is not in the starting lineup Thursday, Sept. 24. 3B Richie Shaffer is starting at first base and batting eighth against Boston Red Sox SP Wade Miley Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Shaffer ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) has played primarily against southpaws (50 of 71 plate appearances), but he owns a lowly .551 OPS against them. FantasyScore players should view him as nothing more than a desperation flier Thursday.

Rays | James Loney keeps hitting

Thu, 17 Sep 2015 20:00:28 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored in a 4-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles Thursday, Sept. 17.

Fantasy Tip: Loney ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) is hitting .381 in September, and while his upside is capped by his lack of power, he isn't a bad source of cap relief at FantasyScore.

Rays | James Loney returns to lineup

Sat, 12 Sep 2015 10:45:41 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney is back in the starting lineup against Boston Red Sox SP Rick Porcello Saturday, Sept. 12, batting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: Loney ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) returns to the lineup after sitting out against a left-handed starter Friday, Sept. 11. He is 5-for-16 (.313) in his career against Porcello but only has four homers in 294 at-bats this season.

Rays | No James Loney Tuesday

Tue, 08 Sep 2015 11:34:23 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney is not in the lineup against Detroit Tigers left-handed SP Matt Boyd Tuesday, Sept. 8. 3B Richie Shaffer is starting at first base and is hitting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Shaffer ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) slugged 26 home runs and drove in 72 runs in the minors this year, so his power can be useful on FantasyScore in a matchup like this against a weak left-handed arm. Consider him a sleeper pick tonight.

Rays | J.P. Arencibia draws in as designated hitter

Sun, 30 Aug 2015 08:00:34 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays C J.P. Arencibia is batting seventh as the designated hitter against Kansas City Royals SP Danny Duffy Sunday, Aug. 30. 1B James Loney is not in the starting lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Daily players could take a speculative leap of faith on Arencibia, as he owns plenty of power potential. However, he also owns an uninspiring .255 career on-base percentage.

Rays | James Loney to serve suspension

Thu, 27 Aug 2015 14:11:59 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney will not be in the starting lineup against Minnesota Twins SP Tommy Milone Thursday, Aug. 27, because he is serving his one-game suspension. OF Daniel Nava will start at first base and is batting second in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Loney ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) should return to the lineup after his suspension. Nava ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) is hitting only .194 this month and is not a great option for owners on FantasyScore.

Rays | James Loney suspended one game

Tue, 25 Aug 2015 11:40:46 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney was suspended one game Tuesday, Aug. 25, for making contact with an umpire in the game Saturday, Aug. 22. Loney is appealing the suspension.

Fantasy Tip: Because he's appealing, Loney ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) will be able to play in the game tonight against Ervin Santana and the Minnesota Twins. Loney has very little power and is a mediocre first base target on FantasyScore, although he does have five hits in 16 career at-bats against Santana.
