Mets | Big night for James Loney

Fri, 24 Jun 2016 20:45:11 -0700

New York Mets 1B James Loney went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, three RBI and three runs scored in an 8-6 win over the Atlanta Braves Friday, June 24.

Fantasy Tip: Loney won't provide much power, but he is hitting .305 and is worth a look in NL-only formats thanks to his solid average.

Mets | James Loney batting third vs. Braves

Thu, 23 Jun 2016 12:46:57 -0700

New York Mets 1B James Loney is batting third against Atlanta Braves SP Matt Wisler Thursday, June 23.

Fantasy Tip: Despite a decent .289/.333/.408 slash line, Loney has just six runs and five RBI through his first six games with the Mets. He isn't an option outside of cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues, but he's a potential low-priced flier for daily contests hitting third Thursday.

Mets | Three hits for James Loney

Sat, 18 Jun 2016 20:45:10 -0700

New York Mets 1B James Loney went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a triple, a run scored and a walk in a 4-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves Saturday, June 18, extending his hitting streak to seven games.

Fantasy Tip: Loney's complete lack of power limits his fantasy appeal, but his decent average could make him worth a look in AL-only leagues.

Mets | James Loney registers three hits

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 05:25:07 -0700

New York Mets 1B James Loney went 3-for-5 with a run, a double and an RBI during the Mets' 6-4 win over the Miami Marlins Saturday, June 4.

Fantasy Tip: Loney is now 6-for-18 with the Mets and has a double and a home run. However, while the veteran is capable of posting a solid batting average, he has limited power and speed and is nothing more than a desperation start outside of cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues. He's going to see plenty of at-bats for the injury depleted Mets in the near future, though.

Mets | James Loney to start Tuesday

Tue, 31 May 2016 07:31:17 -0700

New York Jets 1B James Loney will start against Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos Tuesday, May 31, according to manager Terry Collins.

Fantasy Tip: Loney has a line-drive stroke but minimal power. He had nine home runs and 69 RBI while hitting .290 in 155 games for the Rays in 2015. He won't play every day in New York and is a stopgap at first base until Lucas Duda is healthy, so he'll mainly carry value in NL-only leagues as corner infield insurance.

Mets | James Loney may be activated Tuesday

Mon, 30 May 2016 06:03:54 -0700

New York Mets 1B James Loney likely will be added to the 25-man roster Tuesday, May 31, according to manager Terry Collins.

Fantasy Tip: Loney should see playing time against right-handed pitchers while Lucas Duda is sidelined. He probably should only be used in NL-only leagues at this point because he does not have much power.

Mets | James Loney acquired from San Diego

Sat, 28 May 2016 11:41:14 -0700

The New York Mets have acquired 1B James Loney from the San Diego Padres, in exchange for cash considerations.

Fantasy Tip: The 32-year-old Loney was batting .342 with two home runs and 28 RBI over 158 at-bats for Class AAA El Paso in the Padres' organization after being let go by the Tampa Bay Rays during spring training. He appears likely to receive the bulk of the playing time at first base against right-handed pitching while Lucas Duda (back) is on the disabled list. Loney's fantasy appeal is limited to NL-only fantasy leagues due to his lack of power.

Mets | New York interested in James Loney

Tue, 24 May 2016 09:25:13 -0700

The New York Mets have "some curiosity" about San Diego Padres 1B James Loney, according to a source. Loney can opt out with Class AAA El Paso for a major league contract. The Mets are not interested in New York Yankees 1B Nick Swisher, who is also in the minors.

Fantasy Tip: Loney has always been a line-drive hitter that can carry a respectable average, but he lacks home runs (career-high 15 home runs back in 2007). He probably would only play first base against right-handed pitchers for the Mets, and he'd be a short-term stopgap with Lucas Duda (back) hurt. If the Mets land him, he'd probably only be attractive to those in NL-only leagues.

Rays | James Loney released

Sun, 03 Apr 2016 11:51:54 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney was released Sunday, April 3.

Fantasy Tip: Loney probably will receive interest from other teams but may not be able to find a major league offer. Loney could be an option in an AL-only or NL-only league but should be avoided by mixed league owners.

Rays | James Loney won't make squad

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 12:55:57 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney has been told that he will not make the opening day roster.

Fantasy Tip: The Rays will now likely either trade or release the veteran first baseman. Loney could catch on elsewhere, and he makes fine contact and hits plenty of line drives, but his struggles against lefties will cap his upside and likely keep him in a platoon role, at best.
