White Sox | Van Slyke discusses O. Guillen

Tue, 25 Jul 2006 18:47:36 -0700

SportsTicker reports Detroit Tigers first base coach Andy Van Slyke discusses Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen's managerial approach while on Sporting News Radio Tuesday, July 25. Van Slyke said, " "(Guillen's) a guy who wears his emotions on his sleeve. He is, if you want to call it, an atypical Latin baseball player. I don't believe that it's true for all Latinos, but a lot of people's perception is that Latinos are hot-headed. He has certainly shown that he gets a little upset and a little excited about the littlest, silliest things." Guillen had an outburst toward White Sox SP Jon Garland when he did not retaliate in a beanball war with the Texas Rangers Sunday, July 23. The videotape of the confrontation between Guillen and Garland conveys Guillen might have been showing up Garland, which Van Slyke found objectionable. Van Slyke added, " Do I like what he does sometimes? No. Would I like it if he showed me up like that in the dugout? No. I probably would have punched him. But I think the players have adjusted to his style and type of managing."
