Giants | Matt Cain hurts hamstring, MRI scheduled

Fri, 27 May 2016 23:21:56 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (hamstring) threw just 26 pitches against the Colorado Rockies on Friday, May 25, before he was removed after straining his right hamstring. Manager Bruce Bochy said after the game that Cain was scheduled to undergo an MRI tomorrow and could end up on the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: This is a potentially discouraging setback for Cain, who had really turned things around in his last three starts -- 21 innings, 19 hits, four runs and 23 K's -- and was looking like the ace he once was. We'll need an update before anything is certain, but it appears as though Cain will miss some time.

Giants | Matt Cain wins first game in 10 months

Sun, 22 May 2016 02:38:34 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain allowed one run on six hits and two whiles while striking out five batters over six innings during the Giants' 5-3 win over the Chicago Cubs Saturday, May 21. "When you haven't had one in a year, it's pretty nice to have," Cain said.

Fantasy Tip: Considering Cain hadn't registered a win in months and owns a ratio-shattering 5.37 ERA, you'll want to continue avoiding him in the majority of seasonal league. However, it is worth noting, he has held admirable opponents (Toronto Blue Jays, Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago) to just four runs through 21 innings over his past three outings with 18 punchouts. The veteran might be finding his game and could be worth a speculative flier in deep mixed leagues. Just keep your expectations in check.

Cubs | Jorge Soler draws another start

Sat, 21 May 2016 13:44:48 -0700

Chicago Cubs OF Jorge Soler is in the starting lineup Saturday, May 21, against San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain, making his third straight start in left field and will bat fifth. 2B Ben Zobrist will shift from his usual spot at second base to right field to replace injured OF Jason Heyward and hit fourth. Javier Baez will move over from third to replace Zobrist at the keystone and bat sixth.

Fantasy Tip: The only question in regards to the Cubs' lineup following Heyward's injury was whether Kris Bryant or Zobrist would move to the outfield. Today, it is Zobrist, who is getting rewarded with a shot at the cleanup spot after hitting safely in 16 of his last 17 games. Soler has endured a miserable season so far (.200), although he has shown signs of life over the last three games. Baez is hitless in his last 15 at-bats. As a result, only Zobrist should be trusted of this bunch in most fantasy lineups until further notice.

Cubs | Jason Heyward will not start Saturday

Sat, 21 May 2016 13:43:53 -0700

Chicago Cubs OF Jason Heyward (hip, ribs) is not in the lineup Saturday, May 21, against San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain. Heyward was hurt after crashing into the outfield fence Friday, May 20, and is awaiting the results of an MRI.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should be prepared for a multi-game absence and possibly a stint on the disabled list. In such a scenario, Kris Bryant and/or Ben Zobrist will likely shift to the outfield, leaving Tommy La Stella or Javier Baez as potential every-day players in the interim. Baez, in particular, would be a wonderful DFS option should this situation play out as expected.

Giants | Jake Peavy, Matt Cain in jeopardy?

Mon, 09 May 2016 15:46:56 -0700

San Francisco Giants SPs Jake Peavy and Matt Cain have to be in danger of being bumped for the rotation based on their performance so far, in the opinion of the San Francisco Chronicle's Henry Schulman. Both pitchers face the Toronto Blue Jays this week in their next test. It'll be hard for the Giants to trade either of them, as they'd have to eat a big chunk of money.

Fantasy Tip: The way these veterans have been pitching, only those in deep NL-only leagues should still have them on roster. The matchup this week against the Jays isn't ideal, either, so look to avoid both struggling and aging starters.

Giants | Matt Cain continues to struggle

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 22:41:00 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain dropped to 0-3 this season in a 6-5 loss to the New York Mets. He has now gone 12 starts without a win, dating back to July 22.

Fantasy Tip: Cain has a 7.00 earned run average. It's hard to believe this is the same pitcher who used to be such a solid hurler for San Francisco. For now, Cain's fantasy value is up in smoke and he needs to recapture that lost magic before fantasy owners will trust him again.

Giants | Matt Cain hit around Thursday

Thu, 14 Apr 2016 16:26:50 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain allowed six hits (one home run) and six runs in just 4 2/3 innings to lose to the Colorado Rockies Thursday, April 14. On the bright side, Cain walked only one and struck out seven in the 91-pitch outing. His ERA on the year rose to 6.75.

Fantasy Tip: Cain is definitely past his prime after years of dealing with nagging arm injuries. However, the seven strikeouts lends promise that he can be effective for those in NL and daily formats in the right matchups, mainly at home in the friendly confines of AT and T Park.

Giants | Matt Cain able against Rox

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 23:09:22 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain will face the Colorado Rockies Thursday, April 14. He is 17-8 with a 3.23 ERA in 35 career appearances against the Rockies, including a .203 opponent batting average.

Fantasy Tip: Cain has tremendous career numbers against Colorado, but he is a shell of his former self. He is still worth a look in DFS play if the price is right, but mixed leaguers will still want to avoid him until he strings together a few quality starts in a row.

Giants | Matt Cain won't be limited

Mon, 28 Mar 2016 10:22:15 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain will not be on a "leash" in the rotation this year.

Fantasy Tip: Injuries over the last several seasons have made Cain a shell of his former self, and with a dramatic drop in velocity he has become prone to the home run. Unless a big turnaround occurs, which is unlikely, Cain should be left to those in NL leagues.

Giants | Matt Cain unfazed by poor outing

Wed, 23 Mar 2016 23:44:34 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain allowed six runs on seven hits in four innings in a Cactus League spring game Wednesday, March 23, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Cain wasn't worried about another rough outing. "I felt like my fastball location was a lot better than it was the other day," Cain said. "We threw all four pitches when we wanted to and got good reactions out of those, so I thought we had a lot to build off of, even though you look at the line and it might have been a little funky to look at. But that's what spring is for."

Fantasy Tip: Cain had a rough 2015, posting a 5.79 ERA over 60 2/3 innings with a 1.50 WHIP. His stats have been downhill over each of the past three seasons, and at this point you'll only want to take a chance on him turning it around in NL-only play and the deepest of mixed formats.
