Giants | Matt Cain set for rehab start

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 17:00:28 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (hamstring) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, June 28, and make a rehab start in the Arizona League Friday, July 1, and he's expected to return after the All-Star break.

Fantasy Tip: Cain is far from the fantasy ace he was a handful of years ago for the Giants, and his 5.34 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 6.4 K/9 in 2016 is evidence of that. He's merely a matchup play in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues when he's back in SF's rotation.

Giants | Matt Cain ready for rehab?

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 05:20:36 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (hamstring) could be ready for a rehab assignment as early as Friday, July 1. He will have one more throwing session this week.

Fantasy Tip: Cain's fantasy value is down this season due to a subpar performance, and expectations are that would continue. Hold off on utilizing Cain unless he turns a corner.

Giants | Matt Cain throws bullpen session

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 05:49:43 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (hamstring) threw 20 pitches during a bullpen session Friday, June 24, and is scheduled to throw again Sunday, June 26, according to manager Bruce Bochy.

Fantasy Tip: Cain probably will be able to return to the starting rotation after the All-Star break and should make at least one rehab start. He has struggled this season and should not be a great fantasy option once he is activated from the disabled list.

Giants | Matt Cain back to DL

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 23:09:45 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (hamstring) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, June 14, with a strained hamstring. P Albert Suarez could take Cain's rotation spot.

Fantasy Tip: Suarez has a 3.33 ERA in 27 innings, but he has only struck out 13 batters in that time. He's at most a depth option in NL-only leagues. Cain isn't worth stashing if you need the space.

Giants | Matt Cain struggles in return

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 06:01:23 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (hamstring) allowed three runs, five hits and five walks in 3 2/3 innings after missing his previous two starts with a right hamstring strain. Cain did not get the decision Monday, June 13, but the Giants beat the Milwaukee Brewers 11-5.

Fantasy Tip: You may want to leave Cain on your bench for the time being and see how he responds in his next couple of starts. Manager Bruce Bochy said Cain wasn't as sharp as he was before the stint on the disabled list.

Giants | Matt Cain activated to face Brewers

Mon, 13 Jun 2016 14:19:47 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (hamstring) was activated from the 15-day disabled list to start against the Milwaukee Brewers Monday, June 13. In a corresponding move, RP Chris Stratton was option to Class AAA Sacramento.

Fantasy Tip: It is likely best to take a wait-and-see approach with Cain Monday. He looked to be turning his season around after allowing just four runs through 21 innings over his previous three games before sustaining the hamstring injury, but Cain still shouldn't be viewed as anything more than a deep mixed option.

Giants | Matt Cain throws simulated game

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 19:05:14 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (hamstring) threw 72 pitches during a simulated game Wednesday, June 7. He remains on track to face the Milwaukee Brewers Monday, June 13, although manager Bruce Bochy would like to see how Cain feels Thursday, June 9, before giving him the official starting nod.

Fantasy Tip: Although Cain is 1-5 with a 5.20 ERA in 10 starts this year, he had allowed just four earned runs over his last 22 2/3 innings before landing on the disabled list. He's only worth stashing in NL-only and cavernous mixed formats and daily fantasy gamers should only consider using him when he has a favorable matchup.

Giants | Matt Cain could start Monday

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 16:58:25 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (hamstring) could return from the disabled list to start Monday, June 13, if his simulated game goes well Wednesday, June 9.

Fantasy Tip: Cain had put up some fine outings before his injury, but overall he has a 5.20 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and is striking out just 6.4 hitters per nine innings. His fantasy upside is limited these days as he mainly pitches to contact, but he can be useful as a matchup play, mainly when he pitches at home.

Giants | Matt Cain set for bullpen work

Sat, 04 Jun 2016 22:49:00 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (hamstring) is set for his second bullpen session Sunday, June 5. He could pitch a simulated game on Wednesday, June 8, if all goes well.

Fantasy Tip: Cain owners should stay tuned for further updates and see how he fares in his rehab before going forward and activating him. You might want to give Cain a start or two to shake off some of the rust.

Giants | Matt Cain already throwing

Tue, 31 May 2016 15:52:21 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (hamstring) threw off flat ground Tuesday, May 31, but hasn't done much to test his hamstring yet. The Giants are hoping he can return to start against the Los Angeles Dodgers June 12, which is the first day he's eligible to come off the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Cain is strictly a cheap flyer as a matchup play in daily and seasonal leagues. He's lost plenty of velocity on his pitches and rarely misses bats these days, as evidenced by his 5.20 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 6.4 strikeouts per nine innings. You should only be holding him in cavernous mixed and NL-only formats.
