Giants | Matt Cain placed on DL

Fri, 28 Aug 2015 16:52:07 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (elbow) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, Aug. 28, because of nerve irritation in his elbow. The Giants also recalled SP Chris Heston from Class AAA Sacramento. He received a cortisone shot and underwent an MRI a few days ago which came back clean. Cain hopes to be able to pitch after 15 days.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should monitor Cain's ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) recovery over the next few weeks to see if he has a chance to pitch again this season. Heston will be facing the St. Louis Cardinals this weekend and may not be a great option for fantasy owners.

Giants | Matt Cain might be skipped

Wed, 26 Aug 2015 18:43:19 -0700

The San Francisco Giants might skip SP Matt Cain's next turn in the rotation, and are considering SP Tim Hudson (shoulder) or SP Chris Heston for the assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Cain ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) hasn't been so hot lately, and FantasyScore players will want to avoid him until he gets untracked. He is 0-2 with an 8.03 ERA in five starts in the month of August, serving up seven home runs in 24 2/3 innings.

Giants | Matt Cain has mixed results vs. Cubs

Tue, 25 Aug 2015 15:35:51 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain is 0-1 with a 5.09 ERA in his last four starts against the Chicago Cubs, who he faces Tuesday, Aug. 25. However, he's also 4-0 with a 1.23 ERA in his last six starts at home against the Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: Cain ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) has been very mediocre this year with a 5.66 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in nine starts (47 2/3 innings), and he's striking out only 6.6 hitters per nine innings. Couple that with the fact that the Cubs have the third-highest OPS in the month of August and you have a recipe to avoid Cain on FantasyScore tonight.

Giants | Matt Cain to work Wednesday

Mon, 17 Aug 2015 21:38:58 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain will make his next scheduled start Wednesday, Aug. 19, against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Fantasy Tip: The Giants have had to shuffle around their rotation, and Mike Leake will not return Tuesday as expected. Cain ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) is a decent play in FantasyScore against Jaime Garcia at home.

Giants | Matt Cain to get break?

Sun, 16 Aug 2015 01:43:46 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain may be getting a break here soon, as the team is wondering whether to rest the struggling starter.

Fantasy Tip: Cain ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) has a 2-3 record and 6.05 ERA this season, not the best mark for a pitcher struggling to make his mark. This may be the best thing for Cain's confidence, but for now you should rest him in your lineup.

Giants | Matt Cain not sharp of late

Fri, 14 Aug 2015 16:10:00 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain is 2-3 with a 5.59 ERA in seven starts this year and is 0-2 with a 7.80 ERA in his last three outings. He gave up five runs and six hits while walking a season-high five hitters in his last start against the Chicago Cubs. Cain is 5-5 with a 3.34 ERA in 14 career starts against the Washington Nationals, who he faces Friday, Aug. 14. The Nationals have hit just .186 off of him in San Francisco.

Fantasy Tip: Nothing in any of Cain's ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) starts this year has been impressive, and he's striking out a career-low 6.3 hitters per nine innings. Even at pitching-friendly San Fran, taking a chance on Cain against the struggling Nats lineup doesn't seem worth it.

Giants | Matt Cain continues improving

Thu, 23 Jul 2015 00:25:28 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain allowed one run on five hits in six innings of work Wednesday, July 22, as the Giants beat the San Diego Padres 7-1. Cain walked one and struck out six.

Fantasy Tip: Cain ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) has shown continued improvement after returning to the club following 2014 elbow surgery. Keep an eye on his progress, but be prepared to bench him in matchups against strong teams.

Giants | Matt Cain strong in win

Wed, 22 Jul 2015 18:09:12 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain allowed one run and five hits in six innings, with six strikeouts and one walk Wednesday, July 22, against the San Diego Padres.

Fantasy Tip: Cain ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) rebounded from a five-innings, four-earned-runs-against performance in his last outing. FantasyScore owners will need to continue to play it safe with Cain, but he at least showed there is still some upside to be had.

Giants | Matt Cain set to start Friday

Tue, 14 Jul 2015 15:24:26 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain will start Friday, July 17, against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Fantasy Tip: It's a dangerous spot for Cain ($4,300, 8.6% of cap), with the game being played in Arizona. Cain struggled in his first start since returning from the disabled list, but he rebounded to pitch six scoreless innings while picking up the win in his second start. Cain should be left for use in GPP tournaments.

Giants | Matt Cain shaky in return

Thu, 02 Jul 2015 15:59:18 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (elbow) made his first start of the season Thursday, July 2, against the Miami Marlins and struggled a bit, going five innings and surrendering five runs on seven hits, including two home runs, while striking out two and walking four.

Fantasy Tip: Overall, it wasn’t a good return to the mound for Cain ($4,300, 8.6% of cap), though he was pitching just fine until a troubling fifth inning when the Marlins tagged him for four of their five runs on the day. Despite the off outing, Cain is absolutely still worth a speculative add at the very least, and he still could be a solid option on FantasyScore based on the matchups, especially when he’s working from home in pitcher-friendly San Francisco. The 30-year-old amassed an impressive 55 wins over a four-year stretch from 2009-2012 and can still be useful for fantasy rotations if he remains healthy.
