Mariners | Felix Hernandez throwing from 75 feet

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 14:14:40 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) threw from 75 feet for seven to eight minutes Wednesday, June 22, and he is doing workouts, according to manager Scott Servais.

Fantasy Tip: Continue to stash Hernandez in all fantasy leagues, but know you might not receive ace returns when he's finally back after the All-Star break. Stay tuned for updates as he works his way back.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez to begin throwing

Sun, 19 Jun 2016 16:16:58 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) will begin a throwing program Tuesday, June 21, or Wednesday, June 22, manager Scott Servais said Sunday, June 19.

Fantasy Tip: Hernandez probably won't be back until after the All-Star break, so his fantasy owners have no choice but to stash him until he returns.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez update

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 15:14:05 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) is due to be re-examined Wednesday, June 15, and he remains on limited activities in an effort to maintain his arm strength. "He's playing catch," trainer Rick Griffin reported. "He threw 25 (Tuesday) seated on a chair. Then he had his boot on, and he threw 30 standing up. That did not bother him. He's obviously not throwing hard. He's just doing things to keep his arm (active)." Hernandez doesn't think he'll return until after the All-Star break, and manager Scott Servais said he'll need a build-up program before he returns to the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: King Felix's numbers (2.86 ERA and 1.22 WHIP) are all fine and dandy, but his career-low 7.6 strikeouts per nine along with a notable drop in velocity this year should have his owners worried. Couple that with his current injury and we could be looking at a shaky second half for the veteran hurler. You'll need to remain patient and cautious with him moving forward if you own him.

Rangers | Cole Hamels nets 2,000th strikeout

Sun, 12 Jun 2016 14:32:41 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels netted his 2,000th career strikeout Sunday, June 12. Only six other pitchers active (Bartolo Colon, CC Sabathia, Felix Hernandez, John Lackey, Jake Peavy, Justin Verlander) have 2,000 strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: This is a big honor for Hamels, whose 5-1 record and 78 strikeouts make him a popular fantasy option in daily, AL and mixed formats.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez to miss more time

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 21:08:26 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) said results of a second MRI showed improvement, but he will need to be out for four to six weeks. He said the 12 days he has already missed are included in the timetable.

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners have no choice but to hold on to Hernandez. Assuming he returns healthy, the time off could actually help him avoid the second half declines he has experienced the last couple of seasons.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez to visit doctor

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 19:27:34 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) is scheduled to visit a doctor Thursday, June 9, to examine his strained right calf. He is eligible to return from the disabled list Sunday, June 12, but appears unlikely to come back before the end of the month.

Fantasy Tip: Hernandez should continue to be viewed as a viable pitching option in all fantasy formats, even though his strikeout totals are down in 2016. The 30-year-old right-hander is 4-4 with a 2.86 ERA in 10 starts this year, with 26 walks and 53 strikeouts over 63 innings.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez in walking boot

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 16:08:41 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) will be in a walking boot for the next few days in order to protect his right calf. He threw sitting down Tuesday, June 7, and is hoping to play catch in a few more days.

Fantasy Tip: King Felix won't be ready to return from the DL when he's eligible this Sunday, so his fantasy owners must remain patient. His 2.86 ERA and 1.22 WHIP look great, but underneath he has a career-worst 7.6 K/9, and his velocity has dipped this year. That means he could be in line for worse numbers upon his return. You can no longer count on him to be your unquestioned fantasy ace.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez unlikely to return Sunday

Mon, 06 Jun 2016 16:05:51 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) isn't walking with a noticeable limp, but he's scheduled to visit with a doctor Monday, June 6, to track his progress. Manager Scott Servais all but ruled out Hernandez returning from the disabled list when eligible Sunday, June 12. "It's going to take some time," Servais said. "He's still feeling it. He's not running or anything like that. I'd like to get his arm activated so we don't lose too much time there."

Fantasy Tip: King Felix's fantasy owners must remain patient with him, as it looks like he won't be back at least until sometime next week. Despite a career-low 7.6 strikeouts per nine innings, Hernandez was posting a respectable 2.86 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 10 starts (63 innings). He has a lot of wear on the tires, though, and a decline in his numbers this year was somewhat expected. He should remain serviceable when he's healthy, but you might not be able to count on him for ace-like numbers start in and start out.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez still not throwing

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 12:31:12 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) has yet to resume throwing and there appears to be no timetable for his return. Hernandez had originally been expected to make his next scheduled start as soon as he was eligible to come off the disabled list on June 12. Manager Scott Servais has said that his ace's calf is improving, according to reports.

Fantasy Tip: Hernandez hasn't been as dominant self thus far - 4-4 with a 2.86 ERA in 10 starts - but he is still a must-start in fantasy, although it sounds as if he will probably be out until mid-June. James Paxton was roughed up in his first outing in place of King Felix and probably needs to be treated as a pitcher that can only be used in favorable matchups until further notice.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez's injury not serious

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 11:51:56 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez's (calf) injury is not serious, and he's expected to be ready to come off the disabled list when he's eligible June 12.

Fantasy Tip: Hernandez is sporting a nice 2.86 ERA and 1.22 WHIP, but hasn't been as dominant with just 7.6 strikeouts per nine innings, almost a full strikeout below his career average. Owners should be confident that he can return to form since his injury isn't at all related to his arm. Stash him everywhere.
