Mariners | King Felix picks up fifth victory

Tue, 26 Jul 2016 23:00:27 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez allowed four runs and nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts over six innings in a win Tuesday, July 26, against the Pittsburgh Pirates to pick up his first victory since May 21.

Fantasy Tip: After a shaky outing by his standards in his first start off the 15-day disabled list, King Felix was a little sharper in this one. He still has work to do before re-emerging as a dominant, must-start fantasy play, but he is still a top-shelf option.

Mariners | King Felix so-so in return from DL

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 20:40:51 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) allowed five earned runs, 10 hits and two walks with just two strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision Wednesday, July 20, against the Chicago White Sox. He threw 68 of his 94 pitches for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: Hernandez was noticeably rusty in the first inning, giving up three runs, but he settled down allowing two runs in his final 5 2/3 innings. He remains a must-start fantasy option in all leagues, and you can expect him to be much better in his next outing.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez activated from DL

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 10:00:03 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) was activated from the disabled list to start against the Chicago White Sox Wednesday, July 20. In a corresponding move, RP David Rollins was optioned to Class AAA Tacoma.

Fantasy Tip: It would be wise to take a wait-and-see approach with Hernandez in his first start since Friday, May 27. He's worth owning in all fantasy formats, but with a career-high FIP (4.15) and career-low K/9 (7.6) thus far in 2016, the 30-year-old veteran shouldn't be counted on to return fantasy ace results going forward.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez to be monitored

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 17:18:13 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf), who will be activated off the disabled list to make his first start since May 27 against the Chicago White Sox Wednesday, July 20, will be monitored closer than usual, according to manager Scott Servais. Servais said the Mariners would like to get six innings out of Hernandez. Seattle will also keep Hernandez on a normal five-day cycle in the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Hernandez's 2.86 ERA and 1.22 WHIP don't tell the whole story this year. At age 30 with more than 2,300 innings pitched under his belt in his career, the veteran ace is showing signs of slowing with decreased velocity and a career-low 7.6 strikeouts per nine innings. He's assuredly too risky to rely on in his first start back in a while in most fantasy formats Wednesday afternoon, and don't expect him to be a fantasy ace from here on out.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez makes final rehab start

Fri, 15 Jul 2016 22:48:20 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) pitched 5 2/3 innings for Class AAA Tacoma on Friday, July 15, allowing one run on five hits. He's set to be activated in time to start for the Mariners on Wednesday, July 20.

Fantasy Tip: After nearly two months, King Felix is poised to return. Assuming there are no setbacks between now and Wednesday, Hernandez should be plugged back into your starting lineup.

Mariners | Return timeline for Felix Hernandez

Wed, 06 Jul 2016 13:08:39 -0700

Updating a previous report, Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) will follow up his rehab start with Class A Everett Sunday, July 10, with a start for Class AAA Tacoma Friday, July 15, and then return from the disabled list and pitch against the Chicago White Sox Wednesday, July 20.

Fantasy Tip: Expect Hernandez to start approximately 12 games through the end of the season. Reiterating a previous tip, Hernandez currently owns a career-high FIP (4.15) and career-low K/9 (7.6), so don't count on ace numbers from Hernandez down the stretch. He's better viewed as a mid-rotation hurler at this stage of his career.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez pitching in Class A Sunday

Wed, 06 Jul 2016 13:01:03 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) will pitch for Class A Everett Sunday, July 10.

Fantasy Tip: Expect Hernandez to be back in the rotation soon after the All-Star break, if not immediately. He's still an excellent fantasy asset, but owners will want to keep expectations in check. Hernandez currently sits with a career-high 4.15 FIP and career-low 7.6 K/9, and with 2,325 1/3 innings of wear, the 30-year-old veteran stands to show a slow decline going forward.
