Mariners | Felix Hernandez to make two rehab starts

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 16:01:30 -0700

Updating a previous report, Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) is scheduled to make two rehab starts after he throws a simulated game.

Fantasy Tip: King Felix will be back sometime after the All-Star break. His WHIP and ERA have treated his owners nicely this year before the injury, but a decline in velocity and K rate leave him vulnerable to blowup outings against better teams. Tread carefully with Hernandez in the second half and keep a close eye on his recovery.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez to throw bullpen

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 15:59:21 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) said his calf is feeling fine, and he will throw a bullpen session Friday, July 1, and a simulated game in Houston.

Fantasy Tip: The fact that King Felix is starting to throw again is a great sign, but he won't be back before the All-Star break. Owners must remain patient. Hernandez's 2.86 ERA and 1.22 WHIP look fine and dandy, but his declining velocity and career-low 7.6 K/9 are concerning. There's no guarantee he'll put up ace-like numbers in the second half, especially if his injury continues to hinder him. Be wary of buying low.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez until after break

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 15:32:37 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) is feeling alright Wednesday, June 29, after throwing a 25-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, June 28. He is not expected to return to the Seattle rotation until after the All-Star break.

Fantasy Tip: While Hernandez has a solid 2.86 ERA, he also has a career-low 7.6 K/9 through his 10 outings this season. With 2,325 1/3 innings of wear on his arm, it is likely best to view Hernandez as a supporting piece of your virtual rotation and not a fantasy ace. Check back for updates as he works his way back from the calf injury.

Mariners | King Felix throws bullpen session

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 23:37:16 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) threw 25 pitches off a mound Tuesday, June 28, for the first time since landing on the 15-day disabled list. Manager Scott Servais said Hernandez didn't feel any discomfort, but there is still no timetable on a possible return.

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners will want to stay patient and keep Hernandez reserved in all formats until he can officially return and prove his health in a full start or two without any setbacks.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez to throw Tuesday

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 15:59:39 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) is to throw a 25- to 30-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, June 28. He has thrown two flat ground sessions so far.

Fantasy Tip: The M's are taking their time with King Felix's return, and at this point it doesn't look like he'll be back before the All-Star break. He must remain stashed in all fantasy formats, but the surefire fantasy ace moniker isn't necessarily the case anymore. Hernandez has seen his velocity drop this year and despite his 2.86 ERA and 1.22 WHIP, he's striking out the fewest hitters per nine (7.6) in his career.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez throwing from 75 feet

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 14:14:40 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) threw from 75 feet for seven to eight minutes Wednesday, June 22, and he is doing workouts, according to manager Scott Servais.

Fantasy Tip: Continue to stash Hernandez in all fantasy leagues, but know you might not receive ace returns when he's finally back after the All-Star break. Stay tuned for updates as he works his way back.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez to begin throwing

Sun, 19 Jun 2016 16:16:58 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) will begin a throwing program Tuesday, June 21, or Wednesday, June 22, manager Scott Servais said Sunday, June 19.

Fantasy Tip: Hernandez probably won't be back until after the All-Star break, so his fantasy owners have no choice but to stash him until he returns.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez update

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 15:14:05 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) is due to be re-examined Wednesday, June 15, and he remains on limited activities in an effort to maintain his arm strength. "He's playing catch," trainer Rick Griffin reported. "He threw 25 (Tuesday) seated on a chair. Then he had his boot on, and he threw 30 standing up. That did not bother him. He's obviously not throwing hard. He's just doing things to keep his arm (active)." Hernandez doesn't think he'll return until after the All-Star break, and manager Scott Servais said he'll need a build-up program before he returns to the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: King Felix's numbers (2.86 ERA and 1.22 WHIP) are all fine and dandy, but his career-low 7.6 strikeouts per nine along with a notable drop in velocity this year should have his owners worried. Couple that with his current injury and we could be looking at a shaky second half for the veteran hurler. You'll need to remain patient and cautious with him moving forward if you own him.

Rangers | Cole Hamels nets 2,000th strikeout

Sun, 12 Jun 2016 14:32:41 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels netted his 2,000th career strikeout Sunday, June 12. Only six other pitchers active (Bartolo Colon, CC Sabathia, Felix Hernandez, John Lackey, Jake Peavy, Justin Verlander) have 2,000 strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: This is a big honor for Hamels, whose 5-1 record and 78 strikeouts make him a popular fantasy option in daily, AL and mixed formats.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez to miss more time

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 21:08:26 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) said results of a second MRI showed improvement, but he will need to be out for four to six weeks. He said the 12 days he has already missed are included in the timetable.

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners have no choice but to hold on to Hernandez. Assuming he returns healthy, the time off could actually help him avoid the second half declines he has experienced the last couple of seasons.
