Panthers | Cam Newton will play this week

Tue, 22 Aug 2017 13:55:13 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is expected to take the field for the first time this preseason Thursday, Aug. 22.

Fantasy Tip: How much he plays remains to be seen, but this is a positive step for Newton after a dormant offseason. Newton's inaccuracy is well-documented, but his running ability makes up for misfires. Continue to view him as a QB1 as long as he's fully healthy.

Panthers | Cam Newton to suit up?

Tue, 22 Aug 2017 08:47:01 -0700

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is on track to play Thursday, Aug. 24, in the third preseason game, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Fantasy Tip: Newton is a solid QB1, but he may not run as often as he has in the past. This could give him more name value than actual fantasy value.

Panthers | Cam Newton takes practice in practice

Mon, 21 Aug 2017 15:35:27 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) participated in every drill during practice Monday, Aug. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Newton may not play in any preseason games but should be ready to play in Week 1. He is coming off a disappointing 2016 season but will have new weapons to work with in the passing game. He should be considered a No. 1 quarterback in all leagues even if he runs less this season.

Panthers | Full practice for Curtis Samuel

Mon, 21 Aug 2017 15:07:03 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel (hamstring) fully participated in practice Monday, Aug. 21. Head coach Ron Rivera said he is not sure if Samuel will play in the preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars Thursday, Aug. 24, because Samuel has not done much during training camp and the team wants to avoid aggravating the injury.

Fantasy Tip: Samuel may be held out until the regular season opener so he can have more time to heal his injured hamstring. He is expected to be a slot receiver for the Panthers, and the team may look to get the ball in his hands in space. Samuel probably can be avoided in most standard leagues but could be a waiver wire option during the season.

Panthers | Cam Newton to make debut next week

Sat, 19 Aug 2017 15:58:29 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) will be ready to make his preseason debut against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday, Aug. 26, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Fantasy Tip: Rivera told reporters Newton had "a really good week this week," so it appears all systems are go for Newton, who dropped 20 pounds this offseason. Owners should not expect Newton to run nearly as much as he has in years past, but he will almost certainly still call his own number near the goal line and his supporting cast is as good as it has ever been. Thus, he should be considered a midrange QB1 with elite upside.

Panthers | Cameron Artis-Payne enjoys strong effort

Sat, 19 Aug 2017 15:35:00 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB Cameron Artis-Payne ran for 70 yards and a touchdown on only five carries versus the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, Aug. 19.

Fantasy Tip: With Jonathan Stewart and Christian McCaffrey in the mix, Artis-Payne may be competing with Fozzy Whittaker to avoid being a game-day inactive this year, so he needed a solid showing against Tennessee's second- and third-stringers. He is unlikely to see much playing time this season barring an injury to Stewart or McCaffrey and hasn't done much with his chances over his first two years in the league.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey electric in limited work

Sat, 19 Aug 2017 15:02:01 -0700

Carolina Panthers rookie RB Christian McCaffrey rushed three times for 33 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 39 more yards versus the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, Aug. 19.

Fantasy Tip: McCaffrey took a counter run and beat everyone to the edge on a 17-yard score before adding a 38-yard catch-and-run on a screen pass the following possession. The rookie's explosion is as advertised, and about the only thing that may keep him from being a league-winning player this year is if Jonathan Stewart can play 16 games again. McCaffrey should be a high-end RB2 even in a committee with elite RB1 upside if/when Stewart needs to miss games.

Panthers | Luke Kuechly to miss preseason game

Sat, 19 Aug 2017 11:12:01 -0700

Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly (ribs) will not play in the preseason game against the Tennessee Titans Saturday, Aug. 19, because of sore ribs.

Panthers | Russell Shepard making his mark

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 18:28:32 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Russell Shepard has been a "favorite target" of both Cam Newton and Derek Anderson this spring and summer. In part because rookie WR Curtis Samuel has been nursing a hamstring injury for so much of the offseason, Shepard appears to be the frontrunner for the No. 3 job in Carolina.

Fantasy Tip: Shepard flashed occasionally in 2016 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and owners need only to remember how well Ted Ginn played in a similar role in each of the last two seasons. He doesn't need to be drafted in leagues, but he has enough deep speed to fill the "Ginn role" until Samuel is ready.

Panthers | Cam Newton progressing

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 11:28:38 -0700

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is "throwing more each day and feels fine," according to a source. He is reportedly on track to play in the team's next preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday, Aug. 24, however.

Fantasy Tip: If so, this would be a welcome development, even if he is rusty and only plays a couple of series. For what it is worth, Newton reportedly wants to play but the team is said to be exercising caution. If Newton plays next week, owners need to keep their expectations in check, as he will most likely be rusty.

Panthers | Cam Newton to sit against Tennessee

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 10:51:37 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) will not play versus the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, Aug. 19. Head coach Ron Rivera made the decision after the second of two joint practices against the Titans on Thursday, Aug. 17, and Newton did not throw in team drills during either practice. "You could tell he was rusty. A couple late (balls) on the decisions he made. When he was throwing the ball, he was throwing the ball well, so we're not concerned about that. Now it's just a matter of him working himself back into shape where he can go out and take normal reps instead of us having to make sure we monitor him," Rivera said.

Fantasy Tip: The Panthers remain unconcerned - at least publicly - about Newton's availability for the season opener, but owners probably need to consider him a low-end QB1 at this point and back him up with another quarterback with a solid early-season schedule, such as Carson Palmer, to protect themselves against a predictable slow start from Newton.

Panthers | No Greg Olsen extension imminent

Wed, 16 Aug 2017 20:27:07 -0700

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen's agent has talked with interim general manager Marty Hurney about a possible contract extension for Olsen, but no deal is imminent at this point, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Olsen is looking for a new deal but will probably have to wait until next offseason for a deal. He has been one of the most consistent tight ends in the NFL and should be a No. 1 fantasy tight end in all fantasy leagues.
