Panthers | Two Panthers set free

Fri, 12 Feb 2016 05:59:14 -0800

Carolina Panthers WR Jerricho Cotchery and SS Roman Harper's contracts voided Thursday, Feb. 11, and it's unclear if either will continue playing. Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman added three voidable years on the contracts for Harper and Cotchery when he signed them two years ago to spread out their bonus money and lessen the salary cap hit. As a result, the Panthers will carry a combined $2.25 million in dead money for Harper and Cotchery on the 2016 books.

Panthers | Charles Johnson could be gone

Tue, 09 Feb 2016 13:10:12 -0800

Carolina Panthers DE Charles Johnson turns 30 years old this year and will count $15 million against the Panthers' salary cap. The performance of DE Kony Ealy in Super Bowl 50 could result in Carolina moving on from their veteran defensive end, according to ESPN.com's David Newton.

Panthers | Charles Tillman, Jared Allen want to return

Tue, 09 Feb 2016 13:02:30 -0800

Carolina Panthers CB Charles Tillman and DE Jared Allen want to play in the NFL next season, but only if it's for the Panthers. Tillman is an impending free agent and is coming off a torn anterior cruciate ligament, though, and Allen would count $8.5 million against Carolina's salary cap under his current contract.

Panthers | No talks for Mike Tolbert yet

Tue, 09 Feb 2016 12:54:08 -0800

Carolina Panthers FB Mike Tolbert said there have been no contract talks with the Panthers yet. Tolbert already said he would like to return to Carolina next season. He may be asked to restructure his current deal, which stands at $3.4 million.

Fantasy Tip: Tolbert is one of the few real fullbacks still used in the NFL. He may see a goal-line carry for a touchdown here and there, but he's not worth rostering in fantasy lineups.

Panthers | Jerricho Cotchery wants to stay

Tue, 09 Feb 2016 12:12:46 -0800

Carolina Panthers impending free-agent WR Jerricho Cotchery wants to play for Carolina next season.

Fantasy Tip: Cotchery had a fairly quiet second season with the Panthers, putting up 485 receiving yards and three touchdowns in 14 games. He'll probably have minimal fantasy value whether he stays in Carolina or plays elsewhere.

Panthers | No decision on Josh Norman

Tue, 09 Feb 2016 11:08:00 -0800

Carolina Panthers CB Josh Norman could receive the franchise tag if he and the Panthers aren't able to agree on a long-term deal in the near future. General manager Dave Gettleman said the Panthers will do the best they can to keep their current team together.

Panthers | Mike Tolbert wants to return

Tue, 09 Feb 2016 09:11:10 -0800

Carolina Panthers impending free-agent FB Mike Tolbert said he would like to return in 2016, and he thinks he has another four or five years left to play at a Pro Bowl level.

Fantasy Tip: Tolbert only ran 62 tims for 256 yards and one touchdown in 2015. He's oft-used as a runner and typically only in tough short-yardage and goal-line situations. It would take several injuries on the running back depth chart for him to be a realistic fantasy option.

Panthers | Cam Newton reacts to fumble

Tue, 09 Feb 2016 08:05:52 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton said he didn't dive after a second-half fumble in the Super Bowl because of the way his leg was positioned. "I don't dive on one fumble because the way my leg was - it could have been (contorted) in a way," Newton said. "OK, you say my effort. I didn't dive down. I fumbled. That's fine. But we didn't lose that game because of that fumble. I can tell you that."

Fantasy Tip: Newton has his critics, but what can't be questioned is that he vaulted himself into the elite club of fantasy quarterbacks. He'll be among the top four or five QBs taken in drafts at worst.

Panthers | Greg Olsen held in check

Sun, 07 Feb 2016 23:48:39 -0800

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen had four catches for 41 yards Sunday, Feb. 7, in Super Bowl 50. The Denver Broncos were efficient at shadowing Olsen on midrange routes. "They did a nice job with Greg," Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula said. "He's so talented in the passing game, but we were in a lot of long yardage. They can kind of focus on him and do different things."

Fantasy Tip: Olsen had a big 77-1,104-7 season and should be in the discussion for the second-best tight end after Rob Gronkowski. He'll be a top-five choice at the position in next year's drafts.

Sun, 07 Feb 2016 20:27:55 -0800

Panthers | Cam Newton held out of end zone

Sun, 07 Feb 2016 20:00:06 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton completed 18 of 41 passes for 265 yards and an interception and carried six times for 45 yards in a 24-10 loss to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50 Sunday, Feb. 7.

Fantasy Tip: Newton was under constant pressure from the stout Denver defense, and although his season ended on a sour note, he should still be considered one of the top fantasy quarterbacks when the 2016 season rolls around.

Panthers | Corey Brown out with concussion

Sun, 07 Feb 2016 18:37:23 -0800

Carolina Panthers WR Corey Brown (concussion) has been ruled out for the remainder of Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos Sunday, Feb. 7, with a concussion.

Fantasy Tip: With Brown out of action, Cam Newton will likely lean even more heavily on Greg Olsen and Ted Ginn.
