Panthers | Christian McCaffrey electric in limited work

Sat, 19 Aug 2017 15:02:01 -0700

Carolina Panthers rookie RB Christian McCaffrey rushed three times for 33 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 39 more yards versus the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, Aug. 19.

Fantasy Tip: McCaffrey took a counter run and beat everyone to the edge on a 17-yard score before adding a 38-yard catch-and-run on a screen pass the following possession. The rookie's explosion is as advertised, and about the only thing that may keep him from being a league-winning player this year is if Jonathan Stewart can play 16 games again. McCaffrey should be a high-end RB2 even in a committee with elite RB1 upside if/when Stewart needs to miss games.

Panthers | Russell Shepard making his mark

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 18:28:32 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Russell Shepard has been a "favorite target" of both Cam Newton and Derek Anderson this spring and summer. In part because rookie WR Curtis Samuel has been nursing a hamstring injury for so much of the offseason, Shepard appears to be the frontrunner for the No. 3 job in Carolina.

Fantasy Tip: Shepard flashed occasionally in 2016 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and owners need only to remember how well Ted Ginn played in a similar role in each of the last two seasons. He doesn't need to be drafted in leagues, but he has enough deep speed to fill the "Ginn role" until Samuel is ready.

Panthers | Cam Newton progressing

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 11:28:38 -0700

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is "throwing more each day and feels fine," according to a source. He is reportedly on track to play in the team's next preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday, Aug. 24, however.

Fantasy Tip: If so, this would be a welcome development, even if he is rusty and only plays a couple of series. For what it is worth, Newton reportedly wants to play but the team is said to be exercising caution. If Newton plays next week, owners need to keep their expectations in check, as he will most likely be rusty.

Panthers | Cam Newton to sit against Tennessee

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 10:51:37 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) will not play versus the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, Aug. 19. Head coach Ron Rivera made the decision after the second of two joint practices against the Titans on Thursday, Aug. 17, and Newton did not throw in team drills during either practice. "You could tell he was rusty. A couple late (balls) on the decisions he made. When he was throwing the ball, he was throwing the ball well, so we're not concerned about that. Now it's just a matter of him working himself back into shape where he can go out and take normal reps instead of us having to make sure we monitor him," Rivera said.

Fantasy Tip: The Panthers remain unconcerned - at least publicly - about Newton's availability for the season opener, but owners probably need to consider him a low-end QB1 at this point and back him up with another quarterback with a solid early-season schedule, such as Carson Palmer, to protect themselves against a predictable slow start from Newton.

Panthers | No Greg Olsen extension imminent

Wed, 16 Aug 2017 20:27:07 -0700

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen's agent has talked with interim general manager Marty Hurney about a possible contract extension for Olsen, but no deal is imminent at this point, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Olsen is looking for a new deal but will probably have to wait until next offseason for a deal. He has been one of the most consistent tight ends in the NFL and should be a No. 1 fantasy tight end in all fantasy leagues.

Panthers | Curtis Samuel back at full practice

Wed, 16 Aug 2017 09:48:35 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel returned to full practice Wednesday, Aug. 16, for the first time since injuring his hamstring on the first day of training camp.

Fantasy Tip: Samuel was already up against it trying to transition from a running back/receiver hybrid at Ohio State to more of a full-time receiver in the NFL, so the fact he has missed most of training camp - in addition to missing time in the spring with the same issue - makes it highly unlikely he will make much of an early-season impact. His rare talent makes it worth keeping an eye on his progress, but he can be avoided for now in redraft leagues.

Panthers | Curtis Samuel nearing return to full practice

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 09:16:56 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel (hamstring) was able to participate in individual drills Tuesday, Aug. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Samuel hasn't been able to practice since getting injured on the first day of training camp, making it unlikely he will be able to contribute much early in the season. On the other hand, the second-round rookie is athletic enough to be used on some gadget plays while he gets more acclimated to the pro game and gets his conditioning where it needs to be. Still, as a part-time college receiver transitioning to the pros, you will be hard-pressed to make much of an impact in 2017.

Panthers | Cam Newton takes part in team drills

Sun, 13 Aug 2017 09:06:11 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is being restricted from making deep throws, but he made some passes during a red zone portion of practice Sunday, Aug. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has about another month to get ready for the season opener against the San Francisco 49ers, so there is no cause for alarm yet. Expect Newton to progressively work on deeper throws toward the end of the month before the team allows him to cut it loose in the first week of September. There is no question he comes with some risk, but Newton has top-five upside at his position if he doesn't experience any setbacks.

Panthers | Curtis Samuel working with Cam Newton

Fri, 11 Aug 2017 21:53:37 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel (hamstring) is unable to practice, but he said he has been running routes at half speed on the sidelines with QB Cam Newton (shoulder), who is also unable to practice.

Fantasy Tip: Samuel is a big-play waiting to happen, but his role in the offense isn't clear, and the injury is going to make the learning curve even steeper for the rookie. He is worth a late-round flier, but he could be a year away from making a consistent fantasy impact.
