Lions | Detroit backup RBs could be busy

Wed, 31 Aug 2016 20:20:42 -0700

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah wants to be the every-down back, but head coach Jim Caldwell indicated Tuesday, Aug. 30, he will keep his running-back-by-committee approach, meaning plenty of reps could be in the offing for RBs Theo Riddick, Zach Zenner and Dwayne Washington, in that order. "I think you have to spread it out a little bit," Caldwell said.

Fantasy Tip: Riddick has the most fantasy appeal of the group, as he could see plenty of touches in the red zone and is a force out of the backfield as a receiver. You should take a wait-and-see approach with Zenner and Washington, as it might take an injury to Abdullah or Riddick to give them any fantasy appeal.

Lions | Ameer Abdullah expects to carry load

Wed, 31 Aug 2016 20:19:09 -0700

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah reiterated Wednesday, Aug. 31, that he expects to be the team's every-down back this season, which would mean working in the base three-receiver set and on third downs, as well as in goal-line packages, too. However, head coach Jim Caldwell said Tuesday, Aug. 30, he does not plan to change from his running-back-by-committee approach. "I think you have to spread it out a little bit," Caldwell said. "Backs take a lot of hits in the ball game, and so I don't anticipate (we have) that kind of a guy that gets 30 carries in a ball game. I don't perceive that. Even though maybe it could happen, it wouldn't happen very often."

Fantasy Tip: Sorry to Abdullah fantasy owners. Your player is all for being the bellcow, but it sounds like Theo Riddick, Zach Zenner and even perhaps Dwayne Washington will eat into Abdullah's touches, keeping him around the 150-175 mark rather than 250-300 or more. Abdullah remains a solid RB2 in most formats, and slightly more valuable in PPR leagues.

Lions | Eric Ebron 50-50 for opener

Wed, 31 Aug 2016 07:17:12 -0700

Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron (ankle) is 50-50 to play in Week 1, in the opinion of beat writer Dave Birkett.

Fantasy Tip: Ebron is a breakout candidate if he can remain healthy. He'll be available in the midrange of the TE1 area in drafts.

Lions | Ameer Abdullah makes preseason debut

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah (shoulder) made his preseason debut Saturday, Aug. 27, against the Baltimore Ravens after missing the first two games. He ran four times for 16 yards and did not have any receptions.

Fantasy Tip: Abdullah is expected to be ready for Week 1, but fantasy owners in standard leagues will only want to target him as a low-end RB3. He has slightly higher value in PPR formats.

Lions | Marvin Jones fitting in nicely

Fri, 26 Aug 2016 12:18:52 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Marvin Jones has had "terrific chemistry" with QB Matthew Stafford. He's averaging 16.2 yards per catch in the preseason, which is the sixth-most among all receivers who have had at least five catches through the first two weeks.

Fantasy Tip: With the Lions recently announcing that they'll mostly be in a no-huddle offense, Jones could end up being one of the biggest beneficiaries of this new strategy, which could make him one of the steals in fantasy at wide receiver. Jones has had success before in Cincinnati, and with Calvin Johnson no longer around for the Lions, it's very possible he could break out and enjoy a career year in 2016.

Lions | Dwayne Washington to make team?

Thu, 25 Aug 2016 16:14:16 -0700

Detroit Lions RB Dwayne Washington is "trending" towards making the team as the No. 4 running back after RB Stevan Ridley was released Thursday, August 25. "I've been impressed with some of the things he's done," said offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter. "When the guy gets the ball, he does impressive things. That's a good trait to have."

Fantasy Tip: Washington has shown some flashes this preseason, collecting 34 rushing yards on eight carries through two games, but he's got a long way to go before becoming fantasy relevant. Ameer Abdullah figures to get the bulk of the work out of Detroit's backfield, while Theo Riddick is solidified in his change-of-pace role. However, if an opportunity presents itself at some point down the line, Washington looks like he has the tools to capitalize.

Lions | Eric Ebron not on the field

Thu, 25 Aug 2016 10:28:56 -0700

Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron (ankle) is not participating in practice Thursday, Aug. 25.

Fantasy Tip: Ebron was on the field earlier in the week but does not appear ready to practice at this point. Ebron is expected to be ready for Week 1, but owners should keep an eye on the situation. He should be considered a low-end No. 1 or a high-end No. 2 tight end in most leagues.
