Lions | Anquan Boldin finalizing deal with Detroit

Tue, 26 Jul 2016 10:56:31 -0700

Free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (49ers) is finalizing a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Entering his age-36 season and 14th campaign in the league, Boldin is clearly past his prime, but he's certainly not an afterthought in PPR settings or deep standard leagues. The veteran would add another sneaky pass catcher for the Lions, which stands to slightly cut into the fantasy value of Golden Tate, Eric Ebron and Marvin Jones, but likely help Matthew Stafford. View Boldin as a late-round option with a better floor than ceiling for the 2016 season.

Lions | Detroit working out Jimmy Clausen

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 04:40:47 -0700

The Detroit Lions will work out free-agent QB Jimmy Clausen (Ravens) on Monday, July 25.

Fantasy Tip: Lions general manager Bob Quinn is trying to sign veteran backup help rather than rely on untested talent, and Clausen would fit the bill in Detroit. He completed 57 percent of his passes last year in three starts with the Ravens and Chicago Bears. Still, his fantasy value is minimal and he should be considered no better than a "handcuff" pick for Stafford should Clausen make the roster. There are much better quarterbacks out there, however.

Lions | Jay Lee stood out in OTAs

Sun, 24 Jul 2016 20:50:55 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Jay Lee's size and physicality stood out during offseason workouts, and beat writer Kyle Meinke believes Lee's blocking ability will be a good complement for Detroit's short passing game and rushing attack.

Lions | Corey Fuller could be cut

Sun, 24 Jul 2016 20:36:17 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Corey Fuller's (foot) roster prospects are bleak, according to beat writer Kyle Meinke, because of his offseason foot surgery and the emergence WR T.J. Jones.

Lions | Ameer Abdullah avoids preseason PUP list

Sun, 24 Jul 2016 12:18:09 -0700

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah (shoulder) did not appear on the team's physically unable to perform (PUP) list, suggesting he will be a full-go for training camp following offseason shoulder surgery.

Fantasy Tip: While most anticipated Abdullah would be ready to go, this is obviously a good sign for a back hoping to average more than the 10.5 touches he did as a rookie. The Lions' insistence on using Theo Riddick on passing downs and a big back like Zach Zenner or Stevan Ridley at the goal line certainly limits his value, so owners need to view him as a RB3 for now.

Lions | Two Lions placed on PUP list

Sun, 24 Jul 2016 10:48:48 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Corey Fuller (foot) and TE Brandon Pettigrew (knee) were placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Sunday, July 24.

Fantasy Tip: Fuller and Pettigrew and both in backup roles for the Lions and can be left on waivers barring injuries to players ahead of them.

Lions | Taylor Decker works exclusively on left

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 22:51:30 -0700

Detroit Lions OT Taylor Decker worked exclusively at left tackle in spring practices, pushing OT Riley Reiff to the right side. The team will get a better sense of what Decker can do when the team is in pads and he is working against DE Ziggy Ansah at full speed in training camp.

Lions | Is Jake Rudock future in Detroit?

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 22:50:40 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Jake Rudock was drafted in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, and he might be the future backup to QB Matthew Stafford with veteran QB Dan Orlovsky only signed through 2016. If Rudock sees second-team reps in training camp and the preseason, it might signal the team would prefer to keep Rudock and cut Orlovsky.

Lions | Last year for Dan Orlovsky?

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 22:49:55 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Dan Orlovsky remains the backup seeing second-team reps in the spring, but he is only signed through 2016 and does not have a future in Detroit. The team drafted QB Jake Rudock in the sixth round and he looked competent in minicamp.

Lions | Cole Wick could start over Eric Ebron?

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 15:41:25 -0700

Detroit Lions TE Cole Wick looked "spectacular" in offseason practices and could be in line to push TE Eric Ebron for a starting job if he can carry over that momentum into training camp, according to Detroit Free Press reporter Carlos Monarrez.

Fantasy Tip: A 6-6, 255-pound undrafted tight end from Incarnate Word, Wick reportedly wowed his teammates on a regular basis without pads this spring. Monarrez cautions that he is not predicting Ebron will lose his job, only that he could. A more likely scenario would be Wick showing enough as a blocker to make Brandon Pettigrew expendable. At any rate, Wick is highly unlikely to be a meaningful contributor this season and should only be the radar of dynasty league owners at the moment.

Lions | Graham Glasgow not expected to start

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 13:57:19 -0700

Detroit Lions C Graham Glasgow is not expected to compete for the starting center job during training camp. The Lions would like to have Glasgow as a backup for his rookie season so he can learn the position.

Lions | Marvin Jones to be under microscope

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 23:48:58 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Marvin Jones will be under the microscope during training camp and the preseason as the team sees how fluid he looks in a system that could reward his skill set.

Fantasy Tip: Jones certainly will not be able to replace the retired Calvin Johnson, but he will try to pair with Golden Tate and Eric Ebron to give the team a handful of reliable targets. Jones is worth a look as a WR3/4 or flex fantasy option in the middle to late rounds on draft day, as he could enjoy great success in Motown.

Lions | Ameer Abdullah continues to recover

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 23:47:08 -0700

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah (shoulder) is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery to repair his labrum, but the team expects him to be ready for training camp. He has ascended to the No. 1 spot on the team's depth chart and will be tasked with a significant amount of pass protection, which isn't ideal given his smallish frame.

Fantasy Tip: Abdullah is the No. 1 back, and with the threat of an Arian Foster signing in the rear-view mirror, the second-year back out of Nebraska is a low-end RB2 or solid RB3 for most fantasy rosters as long as he can get healthy and stay healthy.

Lions | Offensive line meshing in Motown

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 23:46:03 -0700

The Detroit Lions have three first-round picks in OT Taylor Decker, OT Riley Reiff and OG Laken Tomlinson along their offensive line, and third-round picks with C Travis Swanson and OG Larry Warford starting, and OL Graham Glasgow waiting in the wings with free-agent addition OL Geoff Schwartz also in the mix.
