Texans | Ryan Griffin provides versatility

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 17:22:48 -0700

Houston Texans TE Ryan Griffin isn't a one-dimensional tight end, according to tight ends coach John Perry. "He can be effective in the pass game. He can be effective as a blocker," Perry said. "You need to bridge that gap like you're a great blocking tight end and a great receiving tight end, to have a bridge guy helps you as an offense to be more effective."

Fantasy Tip: Griffin may be versatile, but he's not of much use to fantasy teams. He and C.J. Fiedorowicz will split time this year, but Griffin should stay out of starting lineups unless Fiedorowicz is hurt.

Texans | Will Fuller agrees to terms

Sun, 26 Jun 2016 07:58:41 -0700

The Houston Texans have agreed to terms with WR Will Fuller on a four-year, $10.2 million contract, according to a source familiar with the terms of the deal. All first-round contracts include a fifth-year option.

Fantasy Tip: Fuller should be viewed as a WR5 with plenty of upside due to his big-play speed, although he has an issue holding on to the football. He should be selected in the later rounds of this year's fantasy drafts.

Texans | Stephen Anderson likely to make roster?

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 12:58:05 -0700

Houston Texans undrafted rookie free agent TE Stephen Anderson is projected to make the final roster.

Fantasy Tip: Anderson gets a mention here because he was a standout during the Texans' offseason practices for a team that received very little production from the position last season. The 6-2, 230-pound tight end/H-back hybrid is a superior athlete with 4.64 speed and a 38-inch vertical jump, so he could end up stretching the field for Houston if he sticks. He's a prospect worth adding in deeper dynasty leagues.

Texans | Wendall Williams has made impression

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 12:46:52 -0700

Houston Texans WR Wendall Williams has dedicated himself to learning and making strides in the Texans' offense, according to wide receiver coach Sean Ryan. Ryan likes Williams' upside and even used him as a kick returner this offseason to showcase his speed.

Texans | C.J. Fiedorowicz has improved

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 11:51:35 -0700

Houston Texans TE C.J. Fiedorowicz has made a lot of progress in the passing game this offseason, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. "He's more instinctive. He knows the plays better. He's a really, really hard worker," O'Brien said. "For him, his true improvement and his true playing will come in training camp when you put the full pads on."

Fiedorowicz (hamstring) was injured earlier this offseason, but he has begun running again and should be good to go by training camp.

Fantasy Tip: Fiedorowicz figures to take over for Garrett Graham at tight end, but Ryan Griffin will also be in the mix. Neither has much fantasy value, though.

Texans | Cecil Shorts pay cut update

Sat, 18 Jun 2016 10:18:43 -0700

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans WR Cecil Shorts still has a $15,625 per game active roster bonus up to $250,000. Shorts' $100,000 workout de-escalator was removed from his original deal, however. His new cap figure stands at $2.371 million, down from $3.421 million.

Fantasy Tip: Shorts is on the downswing of his career and is only worth a late-round flier at best.

Texans | Kevin Johnson should be ready for camp

Sat, 18 Jun 2016 10:02:39 -0700

Houston Texans CB Kevin Johnson (foot, wrist) expects to be fully cleared for training camp after undergoing multiple surgeries this offseason. Johnson did not practice this offseason, but he has resume running and doing other individual drills. Johnson said he's feeling great after undergoing foot surgery to repair a Jones fracture, and a separate surgery for a broken wrist.

Texans | Cecil Shorts takes pay cut

Sat, 18 Jun 2016 09:50:07 -0700

Houston Texans WR Cecil Shorts has agreed to a $1 million pay cut. He was scheduled to make a base salary of $2.7 million in 2016 but will now receive a $1.2 million base salary and $500,000 roster bonus.

Fantasy Tip: The pay cut may give Shorts a better chance to make the 53-man roster this season. Shorts probably will be pushed down the depth chart because of the two rookie receivers the team added this offseason, which hurts his fantasy value. He probably will not be a valuable option during drafts but would be a waiver wire pickup if he plays well early.

Texans | Jaelen Strong a changed man

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 10:45:01 -0700

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong made an effort to slim down this offseason and change his diet. He also did a lot of running to drop 30 pounds. He also made a conscious effort to surround himself with better people after he was arrested in the offseason for marijuana. "I definitely cut a lot of people out," Strong said. "A lot of people don't really need to know what's always going on with me. You've got to do what's best for yourself. And right now, I'm in the best shape I could be." Head coach Bill O'Brien has already called Strong "one of the most improved players on our football team."

Fantasy Tip: Strong had just 14 catches for 161 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games for Houston in his rookie year, and two of those scores came in one game early in the year. With a new quarterback in Brock Osweiler and a more explosive offense, Strong could improve dramatically in his second season. Consider him a late-round sleeper in deeper leagues and keep him on your radar on the waiver wire elsewhere.

Texans | Jaelen Strong turning heads

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 19:49:01 -0700

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong has been impressive during organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp, impressing with seemingly more scoring plays than anyone. He managed three touchdowns on just 14 receptions last season.

Fantasy Tip: Strong is likely to be a much bigger cog in the Houston offense this season, and he could be quite the sleeper for fantasy owners. He is worth a late-round flier in most re-draft leagues, and is a good prospect for those in long-term dynasty formats.
