49ers | Stevie Johnson expected to be cut

Sat, 28 Feb 2015 08:22:01 -0800

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson is expected to be released this offseason, according to sources. The 49ers would save $5.5 million in salary cap space.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson had only one 100-yard game this past season and finished the season with 435 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Johnson likely will not be able to find a starting job in free agency but could find an opportunity to be a No. 3 receiver. Johnson could be an option in the later rounds of drafts next season depending on his situation.

49ers | Frank Gore contract talks underway

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 14:09:34 -0800

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent RB Frank Gore's representation is engaged in contract negotiations with the team, 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula said at the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine. Tomsula and 49ers general manager Trent Baalke agreed that re-signing their own talent was a priority.

Fantasy Tip: Gore may still have a little bit left in the tank for fantasy owners, but investing anything more than a midround selection is a risky proposition. Treat him as a modest RB3, at best, if he returns to the 49ers.

49ers | SF begins talks with Michael Crabtree

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 14:08:50 -0800

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent WR Michael Crabtree and the team have begun contract talks, according to head coach Jim Tomsula. General manager Trent Baalke said Wednesday, Feb. 18, that it's a priority for the 49ers to re-sign their own talent.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like things are pointing up for Crabtree to return to San Francisco. He's coming off a hugely disappointing 2014 campaign after playing in just five games in 2013, but has at least WR2 potential when he's healthy.

49ers | GM to meet with Michael Crabtree's agent

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 23:46:54 -0800

San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke plans to meet with the agent for free-agent WR Michael Crabtree (49ers) at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Fantasy Tip: Crabtree is one of several free agents on the 49ers. He had a bounce-back year with 698 yards and four touchdowns. Crabtree would be a decent WR3 option in fantasy leagues but could go up a bit depending on where he lands.

49ers | Patrick Willis, NaVorro Bowman to return on current deals

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 17:12:00 -0800

San Francisco 49ers LBs Patrick Willis (toe) and NaVorro Bowman are expected to return next year on their current contracts, general manager Trent Baalke hinted at. Willis is scheduled to make $8.315 million, and Bowman will make $5.45 million. Willis continues to rehab his toe after having season-ending surgery and Bowman is over a year removed from a knee injury.

49ers | Vernon Davis will return to SF

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 17:09:49 -0800

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis will return to the team next season, according to general manager Trent Baalke. Davis will make $4.95 million in the final year of his deal, but he's coming off a season in which he had just 26 catches for a measly 245 yards and two touchdowns (both in the season opener). Davis is expected to take part in the team's offseason program after skipping the mandatory minicamp last offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Davis' exceptionally poor 2014 screwed all of his owners over royally. Expect his price to drop significantly in 2015 drafts. That means he could be a bargain as a low-end TE1 or top-tier TE2. A bounce-back season seems like it'd be in store, especially if Colin Kaepernick improves in the pocket.

49ers | Stevie Johnson to start in 2015?

Tue, 17 Feb 2015 22:27:15 -0800

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson might be a clear starting candidate for the 2015 season if impending free-agents WR Anquan Boldin and/or WR Michael Crabtree are not brought back. Johnson stands to count a little more than $6 million against the salary cap. It is unknown if the team feels that cost is too steep.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson's fantasy outlook hinges on the moves of the 49ers in the offseason, whether a first-round pick is used on a receiver and if Bruce Ellington and Quinton Patton can take another giant leap forward.

49ers | Michael Crabtree unlikely to return?

Tue, 17 Feb 2015 22:26:41 -0800

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent WR Michael Crabtree was frustrated with his role at the end of last season, and he recently removed any mention of the 49ers from his Twitter bio. Some interpret that as a signal he is ready to move on to a new organization.

Fantasy Tip: Crabtree has a tremendous amount of talent, but he also has struggled to stay healthy over the years. Perhaps a change of scenery will transform him into the star he was supposed to be coming out of Texas Tech as a 10th overall pick

49ers | Perrish Cox, Chris Culliver to be retained?

Tue, 17 Feb 2015 10:32:23 -0800

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent CBs Perrish Cox and Chris Culliver are wanted back by the team, and the Niners are expected to make a push to re-sign both before the opening of free agency March 10.

49ers | Mike Iupati unlikely for franchise tag

Tue, 17 Feb 2015 10:25:20 -0800

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent OG Mike Iupati is expected to attract plenty of attention on the open market this year. He averaged $3.296 million in his first five NFL seasons, and he's in line for a significant raise. However, it would likely cost the Niners more than $12.5 million to keep him around on a franchise tag, which makes that unlikely. San Fran doesn't want to pay a guard more than an offensive tackle, and they signed OT Anthony Davis to a deal that will pay him $6.5 million on average through the 2019 season. The Niners last used the franchise tag on S Dashon Goldson in 2012.

49ers | Franchise tag not realistic for Crabtree

Tue, 17 Feb 2015 10:20:37 -0800

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent WR Michael Crabtree, who made $4 million last year, is unlikely to receive the franchise tag after his production was disappointing in 2014. The Niners are also unlikely to offer him a multi-year deal that surpasses that of WR Anquan Boldin's $6 million-a-year average.

Fantasy Tip: The good news is that Crabtree is more valuable in point-per-reception leagues, but the bad news is that his poor 2014 season will likely see many sour on him in 2015 fantasy football drafts. If he remains in SF, Colin Kaepernick's performance will depend on whether Crabtree can have a bounceback season and return value for his owners.
