Petty Enterprises | New merged team name announced

David Newton, of ESPN.com, reports Petty Enterprises merger with Gillett Evernham Motorsports has been completed and the new team will be known as Richard Petty Motorsports and will keep the same blue and red logo that symbolized Petty Enterprises. Budweiser will not be a sponsor on the team's 43 or 44 cars.

David Newton, of ESPN.com, reports Petty Enterprises' No. 44 car will replace the No. 10 car as the fourth car in the 2009 Sprint Cup Series merger between Petty Enterprises and Gillett Evernham Motorsports. Driver A.J. Allmendinger is expected to drive a limited number of races in the 44 car.

David Newton, of ESPN.com, reports Petty Enterprises' merger with Gillett Evernham Motorsports has officially been finalized, which will end Petty's 60-year existence in NASCAR. The new organization could be named Richard Petty Motorsports and will run out of GEM's Statesville, N.C., shop and plans to field four cars - No's 43, 9, 19 and 10.

ESPN.com reports Petty Enterprises has agreed to merge with Gillett Evernham Motorsports, according to FOXSports.com. The announcement of the deal is expected next week. The new team is likely to be branded under the Petty name. The No. 43 Dodge will become part of the Gillett team, with driver Reed Sorenson expected to be the driver, according to FOXSports.com. Petty Enterprises' executive vice president Robbie Loomis is expected to assume a managerial job with the new team. Terms of the merger were not disclosed.

Joe Menzer, of NASCAR.com, reports Petty Enterprises driver Kyle Petty said Monday, Dec. 8, that he is no longer a part of the team. "I don't work for Petty Enterprises," Kyle Petty said. "When they did their deal and sold to Boston Ventures, Chad [McCumbee] was going to drive the second car and Bobby [Labonte] was going to drive the first car; they pretty much let me know there wasn't a place for me there going into '09. My deal runs out at the end of the year, but I don't go over there [to the shop in Mooresville, N.C.] because I don't work there."

Updating a previous report, The Associated Press reports Petty Enterprises is in discussions to merge its franchise with Gillett Evernham Motorsports. An earlier report that Petty Enterprises will not return next year is not accurate, according to Petty Enterprises chief executive officer David Zucker. The potential merger would give GEM a four-car operation next season.
