Diamondbacks | Archie Bradley battling for bullpen spot

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 17:25:53 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Archie Bradley is battling for the final spot in the bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: Bradley ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) making the Diamondbacks as a reliever would be somewhat shocking. The starting pitching prospect was competing for one of the rotation openings, and it would make more sense for the rebuilding Diamondbacks to prevent starting his service time by optioning him to AAA. Bradley is a late-round flier in NL-only leagues.

Diamondbacks | Yasmany Tomas has work to do

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 09:52:05 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks OF Yasmany Tomas isn't ready to play third base at the major league level, according to rival scouts and officials. However, the Diamondbacks continue to put him at third in spring games, and they may send him to the minors to start the season to have him work on his defense at the hot corner. Tomas is such a poor defender at third base right now, that it could affect his expectations at the plate.

Fantasy Tip: Tomas ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) has plenty of upside (mainly power upside) at the plate, but if he continues to struggle defensively, it'll be tough for the D-backs to find a spot for him on the diamond in the big leagues. Temper your expectations for the Cuban import in standard drafts.

Diamondbacks | D-backs announce starting rotation

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 14:50:08 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SPs Josh Collmenter, Rubby De La Rosa, Jeremy Hellickson, Chase Anderson and Trevor Cahill will be in the starting rotation, according to manager Chip Hale.

Fantasy Tip: Check back for updates on who will pitch when, but there is limited fantasy value in this rotation. Add the fact Arizona's home ballpark is extremely hitter friendly, and FantasyScore players will want to generally avoid utilizing these starters in contests.

Diamondbacks | Archie Bradley more focused

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 12:21:23 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Archie Bradley said he has been more focused this spring and believes he is in a good state mentally. "It's been an extreme focus," Bradley said. "I feel like that's what it takes to succeed. That's the difference from getting guys out in the big leagues or not. That's the difference from last year to this year. I feel like I have a better understanding of that focus. That mental preparation compared to just the physical." Bradley is still with the team and is not sure where he stands in the competition for a spot in the starting rotation. He has also been able to make adjustments so he does not lose his command for long stretches of time.

Fantasy Tip: Bradley ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) may not make the opening day roster but should have a chance to pitch for the Diamondbacks at some point this season. Owners on NL-only and deep mixed leagues could consider selecting him in the later rounds of drafts and keeping him stashed on their bench.

Diamondbacks | Yasmany Tomas headed to minors?

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 15:43:47 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks 3B/OF Yasmany Tomas could still begin the season in the minor leagues, according to manager Chip Hale. "Yeah, there's a definite chance ... It's going to come down to us all sitting down and everybody talking about what's best for the Major League team."

Fantasy Tip: There are a few factors at play, with the largest being Tomas' six-year, $68.5 million contract. Therefore, it is unlikely he'll spend significant time in the minors, if any. His defense is another factor, as Tomas already has three errors this spring. All said, the mid-round staple is now best left until the late middle rounds of drafts going forward. He does have two home runs and seven RBI with a .250 batting average through 48 at-bats this spring, though. There is still upside.

Diamondbacks | Patrick Corbin throws bullpen

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 06:45:17 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin (elbow) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, March 24, for the first time since Tommy John surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Corbin will be a pitcher to monitor as he makes his way back. He could be an excellent low-priced flyer on FantasyScore after the first month or two.

Diamondbacks | Rubby De La Rosa has rotation job

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 22:15:05 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Rubby De La Rosa has a spot in the starting rotation, manager Chip Hale confirmed Tuesday, March 24.

Fantasy Tip: De La Rosa is worth a late-round pick in NL-only leagues when rounding out a fantasy rotation. He could emerge as a useful option in standard mixed formats, too, especially when he faces two starts in a scoring period.

Diamondbacks | Nick Ahmed to serve as starter?

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 18:57:36 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale indicated Monday, March 23, that SS Nick Ahmed hasn't been named as the starting shortstop. "To name him the starter is hard to do, because we still have camp left," Hale said. "I'm not ready to do that. He's been very impressive."

Fantasy Tip: A report from columnist Peter Gammons indicated Hale made it clear Ahmed would start, but the skipper indicated differently. Still, Ahmed has been impressive during camp and has emerged as a must-have in NL-only play and deeper mixed formats. He also might be a good value in FantasyScore early on if he does indeed seize the starting gig.

Diamondbacks | Yasmany Tomas using leg kick

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 17:17:22 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks OF Yasmany Tomas is using more of a leg kick again after the team studied his mechanics in Cuba, according to manager Chip Hale.

Fantasy Tip: Tomas hit his second homer of the spring Monday, so that's a good sign that he may be more comfortable with his old mechanics. Tomas is a 2015 sleeper that should go somewhere in the late middle rounds of mixed league drafts for his power upside in a nice hitting environment. If he obtains third base eligibility, he'll be even more attractive.

Diamondbacks | Mark Trumbo staying put

Sun, 22 Mar 2015 13:05:05 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart said OF Mark Trumbo will not be traded, even though the club appears to have a surplus of outfielders. "Trumbo is a proven bat," he said. "Tough to move him for an unknown."

Fantasy Tip: If healthy, Trumbo could reach 30 homers and flirt with 100 RBIs, although his batting average will probably hover in the .230s and the strikeouts will pile up by the truckload. He is likely to be available in the middle rounds of universal fantasy baseball drafts.

Diamondbacks | Addison Reed working on delivery

Sun, 15 Mar 2015 08:23:50 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Addison Reed (shoulder) is working on adjusting his delivery in order to cut down on how far he throws across his body. Reed believes the adjustment will help his command and take pressure of his shoulder.

Fantasy Tip: Reed likely will open the season as the closer but could be on a short leash if he struggles early. Reed could be an option in later rounds of fantasy draft since he does bring the possibility of saves.

Diamondbacks | Yasmany Tomas' position still uncertain

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 12:45:43 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks OF Yasmany Tomas has received playing time at third base and in the outfield during spring training games while the team decides where to use him during the season. Tomas failed to field a ground ball at third base during an early spring training game and bounced three throws to first base but recorded the out. One MLB scout said Tomas will never be a top defensive third baseman but could improve his defense with time.

Fantasy Tip: Tomas likely will be an everyday starter for the team but it is not known where he will play in the field. His fantasy value will increase if he earns third base eligibility in addition to his outfield availability. Tomas could be considered a middle-round pick in drafts this season.

Diamondbacks | ARI interested in Dioner Navarro

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 04:21:04 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays C Dioner Navarro is drawing interest from the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Navarro's fantasy value, which is in the low range due to his projected backup status, could rise in Arizona. The Diamondbacks have a collection of catchers on the roster, but Gerald Laird is the best known of the bunch. Others include prospects like Tuffy Gosewisch and Oscar Hernandez.

Diamondbacks | Nick Ahmed using whole field

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 20:00:18 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SS Nick Ahmed had a pair of hits, including a double and RBI, in the Cactus League spring game Sunday, March 8. He was able to use the whole field, something the team was pleased to see. "He's tough-minded and he's always been a winner, and those guys seem to be able to adapt. He has to prove to us that he's a Major League-ready hitter. He's a Major League shortstop right now. Defensively, he's tremendous," manager Chip Hale said Tuesday, March 10.

Fantasy Tip: Ahmedís defensive ability could land him a role on the bench to start the season. He is worth a flier in the late rounds in NL-only formats, and he could be a steal if his offense catches up to his defense sooner rather than later.

Diamondbacks | Aaron Hill to work at hot corner?

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 19:59:38 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks 2B Aaron Hill is projected to start the season at second base, but he has played 42 games at third base and that versatility is likely something the team will take advantage of.

Fantasy Tip: If Hill is able to gain 3B/CI eligibility, in addition to his 2B/MI eligibility, he would see a bump in fantasy appeal. He is a solid late-round addition in most fantasy formats.
