Arizona Diamondbacks news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: It was a non-save situation, which is often cited as a tough spot for closers, and we often see them post sub-par results. Still, Ziegler has allowed five runs -- one unearned -- through his past four innings, and opponents have posted a .389/.476/.444 slash line against him. If Ziegler continues to struggle, Daniel Hudson or Tyler Clippard could assume the ninth-inning gig, and both are potential grabs for saves chasers, and at worst, it is a situation to monitor.

Fantasy Tip: It was been a bit of a rough start for Goldschmidt, as he sits with a .250/.413/.453 slash line, but his counting stats are solid: 26 runs, nine home runs, 30 RBI and six stolen bases. The cross-category production is what made him an early pick in drafts this spring, and he's been turning it on with 12 runs, three home runs, 14 RBI, three stolen bases and a .302/.425/.508 line over his past 18 games. Barring injury, Goldschmidt will be among the best fantasy contributors when it's all said and done, especially since his mediocre start appears to be behind him.

Fantasy Tip: It was a vintage showing from Bourn, and when called upon, he's been solid this season going 11-for-26 with four runs, six RBI, three stolen bases and a 1.077 OPS. Still, his fantasy value is limited to cavernous mixed and NL-only setups at this point because he isn't receiving enough playing time. Bourn stands as a viable low-priced flier in daily contests, especially because he'll likely be scarcely owned.

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Zack Greinke allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out two batters during the Diamondbacks' 8-7 win over the San Diego Padres Saturday, May 28. "Fastball was probably the best it's been all year," Greinke said. "Been pitching good the past month, been winning a lot of games, that's really all that matters. I probably pitched better today than in some other games where I've had better results."
Fantasy Tip: Through his past six games, Greinke is 4-1 with a 3.60 ERA and 36 punchouts through 40 innings. There likely will be better results in the ERA column going forward, but after his start to the season, Greinke owners should be pleased with his progress. Greinke should be viewed as a solid No. 2 starter for your fantasy rotation, but you also shouldn't rule out the possibility for him to return to ace status, either.

Arizona Diamondbacks OF Yasmany Tomas is not starting Saturday, May 28, against the San Diego Padres. Tomas' replacement is OF Michael Bourn, who will bat second against Padres SP Cesar Vargas. In addition, OF Brandon Drury has been moved to left field, OF Chris Owings will play center and Bourn is in right.
Fantasy Tip: Tomas is in a slump at the plate (3-for-20), so maybe this night of rest will do him some good. Bourn's average with Arizona is .125 at home, but his other numbers are pretty strong so he might be worth the flyer in daily leagues. Bourn is also hitting second, so he will have more chances to drive in runs.

Updating a previous report, Arizona Diamondbacks SP Rubby De La Rosa (elbow) is dealing with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow, according to manager Chip Hale. De La Rosa will consult with Dr. James Andrews, who performed Tommy John surgery on De La Rosa in 2011.
Fantasy Tip: De La Rosa owners must be heartbroken. He was enjoying a resurgent season aside from his last crummy start against the Pirates. Until we know more, he's worth stashing in deep mixed and NL-only leagues. Archie Bradley and Edwin Escobar are entering the rotation for the Snakes. Bradley hasn't fared well in the bigs in his few starts this year but has upside after dominating in the minors. He's worth a flier for rotation help in deeper leagues. Escobar will be making his debut and might not be long for the major leagues. Take a flier on him in NL-only leagues if you're desperate.

Arizona Diamondbacks OF Peter O'Brien and RPs Silvino Bracho and Dominic Leone were recalled from Class AAA Friday, May 27. RP Josh Collmenter (shoulder) was also reinstated from the 15-day disabled list. SPs Shelby Miller (finger) and Rubby De La Rosa (elbow) were placed on the disabled list in corresponding moves.
Fantasy Tip: O'Brien is a big-time power prospect who has transitioned from catcher to the outfield. He hit 26 homers in the minors in 2015 and is a waiver wire target for home runs in the short term in deep mixed and NL-only leagues. His stay could be short, though, with David Peralta returning from the DL soon. Bracho has potential to be a successful late-inning reliever, but he's a watch list guy for now. Collmenter is likely to serve in a long-relief role despite the D-backs having a need for starters at the moment. He can be ignored in fantasy.

Arizona Diamondbacks SPs Archie Bradley and Edwin Escobar will start against the San Diego Padres Sunday, May 29, and the Houston Astros Monday, May 30, respectively, manager Chip Hale announced Friday, May 27.
Fantasy Tip: Through his first two starts of the season, Bradley has allowed nine runs through just 10 1/3 innings, which makes him a risky option in all fantasy formats. Escobar owns a 4.79 ERA through 220 innings at the Class AAA level, and it'll be his first career start Monday, so he is an equally risky start. Both are nothing more than flier adds in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Peralta should return to an everyday role in right field with the Snakes when he's ready, so he should remain stashed in all fantasy leagues. He was hitting .260 with three home runs and 12 RBI in 123 at-bats before his injury. In the meantime, Brandon Drury has excelled with consistent playing time and is worth owning in the short term in the majority of seasonal leagues. Power prospect Peter O'Brien was just called up and could see time in the outfield until Peralta is back. He's a waiver wire target in deeper leagues for home runs.

Fantasy Tip: Weeks is likely forgotten in most fantasy formats, but you can't ignore his opportunity to drive in runs in the middle of the Arizona lineup against a hittable pitcher tonight. Consider Weeks a low-priced sleeper considering in daily setups.

Fantasy Tip: This is troubling news for De La Rosa owners and might explain why he allowed five earned runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings his last time out. Before that, though, the was making notable improvements (career-high 9.3 K/9). If you have the room, he's worth stashing in deep mixed and NL-only leagues. Shelby Miller (finger) is also on the DL, so both promising young pitchers Archie Bradley and Braden Shipley could enter the rotation for the D-backs. Keep an eye on them and add if necessary in deeper leagues for their upside.
Fri, 27 May 2016 10:13:50 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Maybe this will explain Miller's poor performance in his first year with the Diamondbacks, as he's easily been the biggest bust of any offseason acquisition this season. If this leads to Archie Bradley being recalled, owners should take notice and probably add him in deeper leagues. The top prospect has the second best ERA in the hitter-friendly PCL at the moment. Braden Shipley is worth watching, too.

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Archie Bradley could be promoted to the major leagues soon, after he was scratched from his scheduled start for Class AAA Reno Thursday, May 26. SP Zack Godley started in Bradley's place.
Fantasy Tip: Bradley is 5-1 with a 1.99 ERA in seven starts for Reno in 2016, with 47 strikeouts over 40 1/3 innings, but he struggled in two appearances in the majors earlier this season. The 23-year-old right-hander could wind up replacing Shelby Miller (finger) in the rotation if he is placed on the disabled list or optioned to the minors, so he has some appeal in NL-only fantasy leagues.
Thu, 26 May 2016 15:18:28 -0700
Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin dropped to 2-4 on the year after losing his start Thursday, May 26, versus the Pittsburgh Pirates. The lefty went 5 2/3 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks, while also registering five strikeouts.
Fantasy Tip: Corbin has been pretty steady this year, pitching into the sixth inning or beyond in all 10 of his starts, but other than that, he leaves a lot to be desired, especially after that remarkable season he had in 2013. Since coming back from Tommy John surgery, Corbin simply hasn't been as effective, and his strikeout rate has dropped as well. He's just a mixed bag right now.
Thu, 26 May 2016 08:42:06 -0700
Arizona Diamondbacks SP Shelby Miller (finger) is still bothered by a finger on his right hand that he banged on the mound in April, according to manager Chip Hale. Miller has been healthy enough to pitch, but the team will continue to evaluate his health. He is still on track for his next start Sunday, May 29.
Fantasy Tip: Miller hasn't been good all year, and he's not a wise start until things start to turn around.
