Braves | Jim Johnson picks up a save

Tue, 26 Jul 2016 23:52:47 -0700

Atlanta Braves RP Jim Johnson worked a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out one, to secure the save against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday, July 26.

Fantasy Tip: With Arodys Vizcaino (oblique) on the DL, the Braves have turned to Johnson in the ninth where he's 2-for-4 this month. The veteran has fringe value in that role for anyone desperate for saves, but if he's traded before the deadline he'll almost certainly move into a setup role with any new club. Caveat emptor.

Braves | Lucas Harrell works six scoreless

Tue, 26 Jul 2016 23:48:07 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Lucas Harrell allowed no runs on four hits in six innings against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday, July 26. Harrell issued three free passes and struck out four.

Fantasy Tip: In five starts this month, Harrell is 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP and 21 K's in 29 1/3 innings. He's NL-only fodder while he's languishing on the Braves, but if they move him before the deadline he could become an intriguing roll of the dice in deeper mixed leagues.

Braves | Jeff Francoeur in Tuesday lineup

Tue, 26 Jul 2016 14:49:39 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Jeff Francoeur is in the lineup Tuesday, July 26, against Minnesota Twins SP Ervin Santana.

Fantasy Tip: Francoeur is likely batting because the pitcher does not have to, what with the game in an American League ballpark. Francoeur doesn't start very often, but he should not start here. With only two hits in his past seven games, Francoeur isn't burning up the lineup.

Braves | Julio Teheran start pushed to Saturday

Tue, 26 Jul 2016 14:27:48 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Julio Teheran (lat) will not start again until Saturday, July 30, against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Fantasy Tip: Teheran gets the best of both worlds here. He gets a couple extra days to rest, and he still faces Philadelphia. You can activate Teheran when the team does.

Braves | Freddie Freeman finally healthy

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 12:05:31 -0700

Atlanta Braves 1B Freddie Freeman (rib cage, back) said he is past the cracked left rib injury he sustained in a collision with Miami Marlins OF Christian Yelich Sunday, May 29. He also had a cancerous mole removed from his back during the All-Star break that caused some concerns for Freeman.

"There's been a lot of mental aspects I've had to learn this year and continue to tell myself, 'You're fine, just be yourself," Freeman said. "For some reason, I've got to remember to tell myself because I've had some weird injuries that affects everything on my swing."

Fantasy Tip: Freeman is 7-for-39 since the All-Star break with a .410 slugging percentage, and he has just 36 RBI for the season. His supporting cast is a hindrance to his fantasy upside, and Freeman is nothing more than a low-end starter at first base. The talent is there to be more, and Freeman was drafted as a mid-tier option at the position, but the results have been mediocre. It doesn't project to improve in 2016, either.

Braves | Freddie Freeman has two hits

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 04:34:31 -0700

Atlanta Braves 1B Freddie Freeman picked up two hits Sunday, July 24, in a 7-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies.

Fantasy Tip: Freeman is showing no signs of the recent cancerous mole that was removed from him. In fact, Freeman's .275 batting average and .507 slugging percentage are much better than his stats earlier in the season. Play Freeman in your lineup without hesitation.

Braves | Gordon Beckham, Adonis Garcia out

Sun, 24 Jul 2016 11:02:55 -0700

Atlanta Braves 2B Gordon Beckham and 3B Adonis Garcia are not in the starting lineup against Colorado Rockies SP Tyler Chatwood Sunday, July 24. 2B Jace Peterson will at second base, while OF Jeff Francoeur will start in left field and is batting fifth. SS Chase d'Arnaud will start at third base and is batting second.

Fantasy Tip: Francoeur has only two hits in his last 16 at-bats but does have two home runs and eight RBI this month. Owners in most leagues should be able to find better options to use. D'Arnaud has six hits and three RBI in his last four games but probably should only he used in NL-only leagues.

Braves | Julio Teheran hopeful for next start

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 14:51:23 -0700

Updating previous reports, Atlanta Braves SP Julio Teheran (lat) said strength tests were good Saturday, July 23, and it's just normal soreness. He hopes to make his next start.

Fantasy Tip: That next start is scheduled for Thursday against the Philadelphia Phillies, and it would be a decent matchup for him.

Braves | Two Braves sitting out

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 14:46:36 -0700

Atlanta Braves SS Erick Aybar and 2B Jace Peterson are out of the lineup Saturday, July 23, with SS Chase d'Arnaud leading off and OF Jeff Francoeur hitting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: Frenchy is hanging around, in part, because of what he does against left-handed pitchers. He faces lefty Tyler Anderson in Coors Field and looks to be a dynamite low-end flyer. As for d'Arnaud, he hits slightly better against lefties, and he's a solid low-end option as well.

Braves | Ender Inciarte unlikely to be moved

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 06:15:28 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Ender Inciarte likely will not be traded this season because general manager John Coppolella said the team is happy with how Inciarte has performed. He said Inciarte has played well defensively and is a better hitter than he has shown.

Fantasy Tip: Inciarte is hitting only .242 with one home run and 12 RBI but should continue to be an everyday player at this point. Owners in most leagues should be able to find better options to use in their fantasy lineups.

Braves | Julio Teheran dealing with sore lat

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 22:00:48 -0700

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Braves SP Julio Teheran (lat) exited his start against the Colorado Rockies Friday, July 22, with right lat tightness and is considered day-to-day.

Fantasy Tip: The good news is that it sounds like Teheran has avoided a serious injury. Check back to see if he will be able to make his next start.

Braves | Julio Teheran leaves with injury

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 20:16:47 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Julio Teheran (undisclosed) walked exited his start against the Colorado Rockies with a trainer Friday, July 22.

Fantasy Tip: Teheran has been stout this year, so don't make any quick roster moves. Stay tuned for updates on the exact nature of his injury and a potential timeline.

Braves | John Gant throws side session

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 16:02:17 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP John Gant (oblique) threw a side session without any setbacks Friday, July 22, and could start a rehab assignment soon.

Fantasy Tip: Gant had a 4.45 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in four starts for the Braves this year, but his 9.2 K/9 was encouraging for those in deeper setups. It's unclear if he'll get another shot at a rotation gig when he's healthy, but those in mixed leagues should be watching from afar anyways.

Braves | Several Braves could be dealt

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 14:38:03 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Jeff Francoeur, 2B Gordon Beckham and RP Jim Johnson, who are all pending free agents, are the prime focus of Atlanta's trade talks as the deadline nears. OFs Ender Inciarte and Nick Markakis are also involved, but there's less of a chance they'll be traded.

Fantasy Tip: Francoeur, Beckham and Johnson aren't likely to be anything more than depth for any team that acquires them in a trade this summer. Francoeur can be useful in NL-only and daily leagues in the right lefty matchups. Beckham contributes modestly across all categories for NL-only middle infield depth. Right now, Johnson is a candidate for saves in Atlanta with Arodys Vizcaino shelved, but he's already shown he's a shaky option there.

Braves | Lucas Harrell drawing trade interest

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 11:03:06 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Lucas Harrell has drawn interest from "at least three teams," according to general manager John Coppolella.

Fantasy Tip: It's amazing how quickly things can change, as Harrell was struggling in Korea as recent as last year. Now, after a decent showing in four starts with the Braves -- his first starts in the big leagues since the beginning of 2014, remember -- he could wind up on a contender. The former Houston Astro will really only hold any value if he remains in the National League.
