Red Sox | Mookie Betts on spring tear

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 12:34:56 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Mookie Betts has 12 extra-base hits, which leads the Grapefruit League, and Betts is hitting .467.

Fantasy Tip: Betts ($4,500 FantasyScore, 9% of cap) could force the Red Sox's hand to deal some outfielders, of which the team definitely has a glut. It's possible Betts could cool off, but ride the hot hand as long as you can.

Red Sox | David Ortiz could see 1B time

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 12:30:22 -0700

Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz could see some time at first base in the final spring games. The team opens the season against the Philadelphia Phillies and it wants Ortiz in the lineup for those games.

Fantasy Tip: Ortiz ($5,600 FantasyScore, 11.2% of cap) should be in your lineup because of his power with the bat, but it's a good thing points aren't deducted for fielding. You also may want to monitor the situation. If the team can't get Ortiz some time at first, it's possible he could sit down for one or more games in this series.

Red Sox | Rusney Castillo unlikely to make team

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 10:50:53 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo (oblique) has been impressive in recent days after recovering from an oblique injury, but it appears unlikely that he'll have a spot on the opening day roster. OF Shane Victorino hasn't done anything to lose the starting right field job this spring. OF Jackie Bradley Jr. has had a good camp, but he's ticketed to start at Triple-A Pawtucket with Castillo.

Fantasy Tip: Castillo ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) should eventually figure into Boston's outfield situation in 2015. He possesses heaps of upside at the plate, and Victorino is likely to eventually need some time off. Castillo's fantasy value has faded a bit, but it just means that he could be a huge bargain now in the later rounds of standard drafts.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara likely to start on DL

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 08:59:00 -0700

Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) felt more pain in his left hamstring after throwing 30 pitches in a bullpen session Monday, March 30, and he's likely to start the season on the 15-day disabled list, according to manager John Farrell. Farrell said he's unsure if the team will keep seven or eight men in the bullpen, and he's unsure if RP Edward Mujica will assume the closing role to open up the year.

Fantasy Tip: Uehara, who turns 40 this Friday, has dealt with hamstring problems in the past, too. Age and injury concerns already made Uehara a shaky saves contributor this spring. Mujica is the favorite to see most of the save chances in Uehara's absence. Target him first in your fantasy leagues if he's still on the waiver wire. Junichi Tazawa isn't a bad consolation prize, and his skills are more intriguing.

Red Sox | Blake Swihart staying in minors

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 13:04:30 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Blake Swihart will begin the season with Triple-A Pawtucket, according to manager John Farrell.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to avoid Swihart ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) in FantasyScore contests until he is recalled. With just Ryan Hanigan ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) and Sandy Leon ahead of Swihart on the depth chart, it is possible Boston will be a little more hasty bringing their top prospect to the majors. Swihart is a stash candidate in AL-only formats, and he would warrant a speculative add in deep mixed leagues with news of a promotion.

Red Sox | Christian Vazquez has sprained elbow

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 08:58:36 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez (elbow) is on the 60-day disabled list due to a right elbow sprain. He will visit with Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion on his right elbow after undergoing an MRI exam last Friday. C Ryan Hanigan will become the starting catcher to start the season, and C Sandy Leon will serve as the backup. The trade for Leon likely means Boston would rather have C Blake Swihart have more seasoning in the minors.

Fantasy Tip: A combination of Hanigan and Leon hold very little fantasy value in all formats, and the Red Sox catching situation should be avoided wherever possible. Swihart, the team's top prospect, is worth stashing in AL-only and keeper leagues, though, should he come up at some point in 2015.

Red Sox | Christian Vazquez to 60-day DL

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 07:07:42 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez (elbow) was placed on the 60-day disabled list Monday, March 30.

Fantasy Tip: The team acquired Sandy Leon from the Washington Nationals, but he and Ryan Hanigan hold little value on FantasyScore. It's best to avoid this situation altogether unless Blake Swihart receives his shot.

Red Sox | BOS has no interest in Dioner Navarro

Sun, 29 Mar 2015 13:38:38 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays C Dioner Navarro is attracting no interest from the Boston Red Sox despite the injury to Red Sox C Christian Vazquez.

Fantasy Tip: Navarro appears to be stuck in Toronto with little fantasy value, so unless his situation changes he is best left undrafted in any league.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz named OD starter

Sun, 29 Mar 2015 07:31:08 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz has been named the Opening Day starter by manager John Farrell Sunday, March 29. Buchholz will start Monday, April 6, against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Fantasy Tip: Buchholz ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) regressed to a 5.34 ERA last season after posting a number of 1.74 in 2013. It says a lot about the state of the Red Sox starting rotation that Buchholz and his 3.92 career ERA can be named the leader of the staff. Buchholz and the Red Sox will have an excellent opportunity to start the season on the right foot with a series against the Phillies, and Buchholz will be a strong, cheap option as a second starting pitcher in FantasyScore on opening day, with most other options carrying a high price tag.

Red Sox | Edward Mujica could close

Sun, 29 Mar 2015 07:22:31 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Edward Mujica could begin the season as the team's closer, with RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) considered unlikely for opening day. Manager John Farrell also said using matchups could also be an option for the team in the ninth inning.

Fantasy Tip: Mujica has 49 career saves, with a career-high 37 in 2013 while with the St. Louis Cardinals. If Mujica is handed the Red Sox's closer job to begin the season he'll be an excellent player to target in the late rounds of fantasy drafts. Mujica is worth a flier with a near 40-year-old Uehara facing several injury concerns, but Junichi Tazawa will figure in as well.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara unlikely for OD

Sun, 29 Mar 2015 07:18:52 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) was downgraded to unlikely for opening day, Sunday, March 29, by manager John Farrell.

Fantasy Tip: Already hampered by injury, the almost 40-year-old Uehara enters the 2015 fantasy season with considerable risk. Uehara's performance has remained relatively stable as an elite-level reliever, but the injury concerns are piling up. RP Edward Mujica appears likely to begin the season as the Red Sox closer, and can be had in the late rounds of drafts, or for a very-low cost on FantasyScore to begin the season.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly to pitch in minor-league game

Sun, 29 Mar 2015 07:00:58 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (biceps) will pitch in a minor-league game this week. This will allow for the Red Sox to start the season with Kelly on the disabled list with a backdated stint.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) boldly proclaimed he could win the American League Cy Young award this season, earlier this offseason. If he's going to do that, it appears as though he'll have to do so with less than a full slate of starts. Kelly piled up a record of 6-4 in 17 starts last season for the Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals, with an xFIP of 4.19. Owners will need to see a lengthy string of quality starts before they give a roster spot to Kelly this season.

Red Sox | Christian Vazquez's MRI finds abnormality

Sat, 28 Mar 2015 14:48:40 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez (elbow) had a recent MRI reveal "something" in his right elbow. He'll seek a second opinion.

Fantasy Tip: Ryan Hanigan would project as the starter if Vazquez were to miss a short window of time. Top prospect Blake Swihart could be in the mix if Vazquez were to need Tommy John surgery or miss a significant amount of time.

Red Sox | Christian Vazquez has MRI

Fri, 27 Mar 2015 09:41:37 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez (elbow) underwent an MRI exam on his right elbow Thursday, March 26, and top catching prospect Blake Swihart could be in the mix on opening day is Vazquez is sidelined, according to manager John Farrell. Swihart was already sent to minor league camp, but he still may be in consideration for the opening day roster. However, Boston views Vazquez's MRI exam as more of a precautionary measure.

Fantasy Tip: Vazquez and Swihart are both young catchers with plenty of potential, but Swihart is the team's top minor league prospect, and he's much more attractive to owners in keeper leagues. Vazquez is an option as your second backstop in two-catcher leagues, because he's expected to see the most playing time in 2015. However, Swihart may be worth a speculative add in AL-only leagues if he opens the season as Boston's starting catcher.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz working in new mechanics

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 15:29:11 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz tweaked his delivery during the offseason to help maintain balance and keep his body and arm in sync. So far this spring he has a 1.80 ERA with 12 strikeouts through 10 innings.

Fantasy Tip: While everyone writes Buchholz ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) off after a career-worst 2014 season, there could be sneaky profit potential late in drafts. At worst, he is a player to monitor and add if he parlays his strong spring into the season. Opening the season against the Philadelphia Phillies isn't a horrible matchup to turn to Buchholz as a high-risk, high-reward second starter in FantasyScore contests.
