Chicago Cubs news, rumors and injuries

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in his major league debut against the San Diego Padres Friday, April 17. He was hitting cleanup and starting at third base. Bryant said he had only three hours of sleep before his debut Friday. He was hitting .321 with three home runs and 10 RBI in 28 at-bats with Triple-A Iowa before his call-up. Cubs executive Theo Epstein said Bryant wouldn't have been brought up had 3B Mike Olt (wrist) not landed on the disabled list.
Fantasy Tip: Bryant ($4,400, 8.8% of cap) looked overmatched and may have been pressing in his MLB debut Friday. If you had been stashing him in standard fantasy leagues, you'll want him in your starting lineups immediately. At FantasyScore, you may want to hold off and let him get his feet wet in the bigs first. A matchup against Padres starter Tyson Ross tomorrow could be another tough day for the youngster.

Fantasy Tip: Herrera ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is a weak-hitting utility infielder that should be ignored at FantasyScore, especially while hitting at the bottom of the lineup against an ace like Shields.

Fantasy Tip: Bryant enters the fold with possibly the most hype since Bryce Harper came up in 2012. Give him a game or two to get his feet wet on FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Olt was already a shaky play at FantasyScore because of his poor batting average, and he heads to the disabled list just in time for Kris Bryant to be called up. If Bryant performs at the level he is expected to, Olt may not have many at-bats waiting when he recovers.

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant will be called up Friday, April 17. The Cubs will begin a home series against the San Diego Padres Friday, with RHP James Shields expected to start the series opener for the Padres.
Fantasy Tip: Bryant hit .333 with two home runs in 29 plate appearances through just six games for Class AAA Iowa. Bryant should be owned in every league and will be a popular play in FantasyScore right away. After a jaw-dropping spring training run, there seems to be little reason to not invest in Bryant immediately, but owners should be looking for lesser owned assets in GPP games.

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant is hitting .333 in six minor league games with Triple-A Iowa with two home runs to start the year. The first day he can be promoted to the majors so that the Cubs can pick up an extra year of service time on him would be Friday, April 17. 3B Mike Olt (wrist) is dealing with an injured right wrist and 2B Tommy La Stella (rib cage) just landed on the disabled list. Cubs third basemen are hitting a combined .125 with a .472 OPS and one extra-base hit.
Fantasy Tip: It would not be a shock to see Bryant called up at the end of this week for offensive reinforcement in Chicago. He's a popular pick as the National League Rookie of the Year in 2015, and he has heaps of upside and monster power potential. He'll be a popular play at FantasyScore when he arrives on the scene.

Chicago Cubs 3B Mike Olt (wrist) is still not in the starting lineup Wednesday, April 15. 2B Arismendy Alcantara is starting at third base and is hitting seventh in the batting order against Cincinnati Reds SP Jason Marquis.
Fantasy Tip: Alcantara ($2,500, 5.0% of cap) brings an exciting mix of power and speed as an infielder, and he should be considered a nice sleeper choice at second base at FantasyScore against Marquis.

Fantasy Tip: Olt's injury doesn't seem to be too serious, and he was feeling better Tuesday, so he could be back in the starting lineup tomorrow. Herrera ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) isn't recommended for FantasyScore lineups, even against Cincinnati Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani.

Fantasy Tip: Kris Bryant was not recalled to take La Stella's roster spot, but the big-time prospect could still be up in Chicago very soon. With Mike Olt (wrist) also dinged up, Arismendy Alcantara ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) should see consistent playing time in the Chicago infield in the short term. Consider him a sleeper Tuesday night against Cincinnati Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani.

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester threw over to first base on a pickoff attempt for the first time Monday, April 13, since April 30 of 2013, and he airmailed the throw into right field. Lester allowed just 12 steals in 16 attempts in 2013 and 16 in 21 attempts last year thanks to his quick slide step with a runner on first. The St. Louis Cardinals stole three bases off him on opening night, and the Cincinnati Reds had another last night.
Fantasy Tip: It's looking like Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) may have a case of the yips on throws to first base to hold runners on, and it explains why he went all of last year (and the playoffs) without a single throw over. It remains to be seen how it'll affect his overall numbers and ERA, but opposing teams are likely to exploit this weakness and become even more aggressive on the basepaths against him.

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester allowed six runs and 10 hits in six innings in a no-decision against the Cincinnati Reds Tuesday, April 13, and his ERA shot up to 7.84 after two starts this year. "He's still at the end of spring training right now," manager Joe Maddon said. "He'll be fine. I have no doubt about that."
Fantasy Tip: Remember that Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) dealt with a bout of dead arm in spring training, and like Maddon mentioned, he may not be at top form to start the year. You'll want to be wary of Lester again in his next start at FantasyScore until he shows us that he can settle down.

Fantasy Tip: Soler ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) has tremendous upside in the Cubs' young lineup. He's off to a good start, too, going 7-for-23 (.304) with two home runs and six RBI. Coming off a big game, Soler is a nice option Tuesday against Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani.

Chicago Cubs 2B Tommy La Stella (side), who hasn't played since last Wednesday because of a sore right side, could be headed for the disabled list. That could prompt the Cubs to promote 3B Kris Bryant from Triple-A Iowa. "They just started, though. We're trying to get him into a good rhythm down there. But we'll see. Obviously his development is a hugely important factor and the needs of the big league team as well," president Theo Epstein said. Bryant has hit four home runs in the last two games at Iowa.
Fantasy Tip: Bryant currently is unavailable at FantasyScore, because he's still in the minors. He should already be owned in all fantasy baseball leagues. Once Bryant is in the bigs, which could be at the end of this week, he'll likely be a popular FantasyScore play for his monstrous power upside.
Mon, 13 Apr 2015 15:43:27 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Jonathan Herrera ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) will fill in at third base Monday night and hit ninth in the batting order. Herrera should be considered a very weak FantasyScore option.
Mon, 13 Apr 2015 14:15:12 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Alcantara ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) is hitless in his first 12 at-bats of the 2015 season with one stolen base and five strikeouts. Alcantara is cheap for daily gamers, but the fact that he's hitting last in the lineup makes him less attractive to FantasyScore users.
