Fantasy Tip: The others would include Justin Turner and Tsuyoshi Wada. This is a battle to monitor throughout spring training, as the winner will hold value in deep mixed leagues and NL-only formats. Continue to check back for updates.

Fantasy Tip: Hendricks went 7-2 with a 2.46 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP through 13 starts last season after cursing through the minor leagues in four years. He is worth targeting in the late middle rounds, but note his strikeout upside is limited. Plus, his ratios will be difficult to duplicate.

Fantasy Tip: It's not a surprise that the Cubs' big free-agent pitching acquisition will start the first game of the season against the St. Louis Cardinals in Chicago. There is some concern about Lester's WHIP these days, but his uptick in strikeouts last year was a comforting sign, and the move to the National League should keep him in fantasy ace territory.

Chicago Cubs OF Jorge Soler, who is listed at 215 pounds, said he currently weighs 242 pounds after adding plenty of muscle in the offseason. Soler thinks he has maintained his range in the outfield despite the added weight.
Fantasy Tip: Soler, 23, smacked five home runs and had 20 RBI in just 97 plate appearances in his first taste of the big leagues late in 2014. He should see everyday playing time immediately in 2015, making him a sleeper prospect in the middle rounds of standard leagues. Despite a vicious uppercut swing, Soler makes enough contact to be a candidate for a breakout season.

Fantasy Tip: La Stella is unlikely to fill anything more than a utility role with the Cubs. However, there is an opportunity for him to receive enough at-bats to warrant attention in NL-only leagues, especially if a few of the Cubs prospects have a few hiccups in their development.

Fantasy Tip: Bryant has been anointed the top prospect in baseball by some outlets. He'll battle for the third base job, but he'll really have to torment spring pitching to win a spot on Opening Day. He'll be a player you look to take a flyer on in the second half of your draft.

Fantasy Tip: Wood's status on the team was more cemented until the team signed Jason Hammel and Jon Lester in free agency. Right now, Wood will battle Tsuyoshi Wada and Felix Doubront for the fifth spot and could lose out. Watch this battle accordingly.

The Chicago Cubs may keep three catchers on their roster for depth at the position, according to sources.
Fantasy Tip: Welington Castillo had been trade bait but would not be moved under this scenario. Castillo's fantasy value would decrease as the No. 3 catcher on the roster, and it makes a platoon at this position more likely.
Sat, 21 Feb 2015 07:28:50 -0800
Fantasy Tip: It looks like Castillo is the third catcher on the depth chart at this point, so it would help his value if he is traded. At this point, Castillo should not be an option in drafts but would have value if he becomes a starting catcher elsewhere.

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant, who hit .325 with 43 runs and 110 RBI between Class AA and AAA combined last year, may have his major league debut delayed this year due to service time. However, Bryant isn't worried about the decisions of the front office. His goal is just to make a decision hard on the team's brass. Last year in spring training, he was 2-for-18 with two home runs.
Fantasy Tip: Bryant had a phenomenal year in the minors last year. He's one of the Cubbies' most impressive prospects, and that'll surely make him overvalued in your fantasy baseball draft this year. He has impressive power at a weak position, but be careful not to overpay; Bryant has yet to play in the majors and strikes out frequently.

Chicago Cubs 3B Mike Olt is the front-runner to win the third base job over 3B Kris Bryant to start the season. However, Bryant hit .325/.438/.661 with 43 homers in the minors last year, and he'll likely be starting in Chicago by midseason or season if he keeps that up. Olt, though, saw marked improvement late last year and could re-establish himself as a lineup fixture this spring. 2B Arismendy Alcantara could also see time at the hot corner. The Cubbies have said they do not want to rush things with Bryant.
Fantasy Tip: Despite the fact that Bryant is likely to start 2015 in the minors again, he'll probably continue to be overvalued by fantasy baseball drafters. For that fact alone, Olt could be a nice sleeper target in NL-only leagues for his power stroke, but he'll need to make much more contact to last in the starting lineup and hold off Bryant.

Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon plans on experimenting with the lineup in his first year with the team. He's considered batting the pitcher eighth, which he did at times while managing the Tampa Bay Rays. Maddon is a fan of 2B Arismendy Alcantara's versatility at the leadoff spot if he's playing. The projected batting order has OF Dexter Fowler leading off, however.
