Cubs | Jon Lester says he's ready

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 14:12:14 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester (arm) wasn't happy with his spring outing Tuesday, March 31, but he said he is ready for his opening night start against the St. Louis Cardinals Sunday, April 5. However, it doesn't appear that he'll be 100% for his first start of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Lester won't be available at FantasyScore for his opening start. He should be considered a fantasy ace, but because he might have his pitch count capped in his first start, there should be consideration given to benching him against the Cardinals out of the gate in formats other than daily.

Cubs | Jon Lester to pitch in minors game

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 18:14:32 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester (arm) will start a minor league game Tuesday, March 31, at the team's complex, his final tuneup before the regular season opener. The Cubs want to be able to control his pitch count and situations Tuesday. He was scratched from his last spring start March 21 due to a tired arm.

Fantasy Tip: Lester remains on track for the regular season, but he draws the high-octane St. Louis Cardinals in his first start. At $7,700 (or 15.4% of cap) he is not a recommended option in FantasyScore.

Cubs | Addison Russell assigned to minors

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 18:13:48 -0700

Chicago Cubs SS Addison Russell was assigned to the minor league camp Monday, March 30. "I couldn't tell him what to work on," manager Joe Maddon said. "He's that accomplished at that age. I told him, 'Just keep doing what you're doing."

Fantasy Tip: Russell had a great spring and it is just a matter of time before he sees his time on the north side with the big club. At this point, only long-term keeper owners and fantasy owners in NL-only leagues with plenty of bench spots will want to draft him.

Cubs | Chris Denorfia to play soon

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 18:13:15 -0700

Chicago Cubs OF Chris Denorfia (hamstring) was able to take batting practice Monday, March 30, and he is expected to play in a minor league game by the middle of the week. It is still uncertain if he will be ready for the regular season opener.

Fantasy Tip: Denorfia proved to be a solid daily fantasy option at times last season, so FantasyScore owners will want to remember him as a solid bargain when the matchup is favorable once he is healthy and the regular season begins.

Cubs | Phil Coke lands job on north side

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 18:12:43 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Phil Coke has made the opening day roster, according to a source. Coke had opted out of his contract Friday, March 27, because the team had not put him on the major league roster.

Fantasy Tip: Coke will work in late-inning situations, and he can help NL-only rotisserie owners in the ERA and WHIP categories, as well as those fantasy owners in leagues which reward holds.

Cubs | Platoon at keystone likely for Cubs

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 13:32:31 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2Bs Tommy La Stella and Arismendy Alcantara are expected to share playing time at second base.

Fantasy Tip: La Stella ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) has also played well at third base this spring and could receive looks there spelling Mike Olt ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) early this season. Alcantara ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) is a versatile defender who boasts a power-speed combo, and he is the only one worth a look in seasonal mixed leagues -- albeit just deep ones. In FantasyScore contests, the Cubs project to have a high-scoring offense, and their home park is favorable, so there could be nice value whenever La Stella, Olt and Alcantara are in the lineup.

Cubs | Javier Baez, Kris Bryant sent down

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 09:53:48 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez was optioned to Triple-A Iowa Monday, March 30, and 3B Kris Bryant and SS Addison Russell were assigned to minor league camp.

Fantasy Tip: Baez, unlike Bryant, really struggled to make consistent contact this spring. It could be a while before the Cubbies bring him back up, as they'll likely want to see him cut down on his swings and misses. Bryant, on the other hand, could be up very soon after the first week or so of the regular season. Both Bryant and Baez should remain owned in all formats. The moves assure that Arismendy Alcantara ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) will see consistent playing time on the infield to start the year, and he'll be a sneaky FantasyScore play in the early going. Alcantara is worth a gamble in the later rounds of deep mixed leagues.

Cubs | Jorge Soler goes yard

Sat, 28 Mar 2015 06:51:40 -0700

Chicago Cubs OF Jorge Soler hit his third home run of the spring Friday, March 27. He has six runs, nine RBI and a .333/.370/.619 slash line through 46 plate appearances.

Fantasy Tip: Soler was a heavily inked breakout target throughout the offseason and is now a staple in the early middle rounds of drafts. He flashed high-end upside late last season with 5 five home runs and 20 RBI in just 97 plate appearances. It is worth noting he has just 111 at-bats at the Triple-A level, though, so there is a degree of risk. Still, his power potential is worth grabbing if you need pop.

Cubs | Kris Bryant needs more seasoning?

Fri, 27 Mar 2015 11:38:30 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant says that he is ready to start the 2015 season in the major leagues, but team president Theo Epstein said the team is still evaluating the youngster, and he might need more seasoning in the minors before he makes his major league debut. Bryant currently leads all of baseball with nine home runs this spring and his batting .406 with 15 RBI. "I've never put a guy on an opening day roster who hadn't played in the big leagues previously. In 13 years, I've never done it," Epstein said. The Cubs can prevent Bryant from becoming a free agent until 2021 if he doesn't make his debut until at least mid-April.

Fantasy Tip: It seems likely that Bryant will start 2015 in the minors, but it surely won't be long before he'll make his major league debut. He belong on all fantasy rosters, and because of his excellent spring, he'll surely be way overpriced. Bryant's lack of consistent contact is a red flag, but his overwhelming power stroke is worth overpaying for, especially in keeper leagues.

Cubs | Rough game for Kris Bryant

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 18:37:37 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant struck out looking three times Thursday, March 26.

Fantasy Tip: Bryant's power potential is through the roof, but occasional rough patches are to be expected from any young player. Don't let a bad game stop you from taking Bryant in the middle rounds of your fantasy draft.

Cubs | Jon Lester still on track

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 13:38:00 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester (arm) will make another minor league start next week and should approach 75 to 80 pitches. He is still on course to start opening day Sunday, April 5, against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Fantasy Tip: While it is difficult to bench a front-of-the-rotation starter, Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) will likely on a pitch count and faces a solid offensive Cardinals team in his first start. It could be a wise move to give him a start to prove his health, especially in formats with an innings cap. Lester should still be considered a low-end fantasy ace and worth targeting in the early middle rounds.

Cubs | Starlin Castro 100% healthy

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 14:08:18 -0700

Chicago Cubs SS Starlin Castro (groin) said he is 100% healthy and has no problems with his groin Wednesday, March 25.

Fantasy Tip: Castro ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) has 28 plate appearances this spring and is coming off a solid bounce back season. Castro is a viable mid-round shortstop target, however he doesn't excel in any category and his power-speed combo isn't enticing, either. Castro has 13 swipes over the past two seasons and has never topped 15 home runs in a season. Still, at 25, he is just entering his prime and already has 3186 plate appearances and 846 hits in his career. There could be another level of production in an improved lineup.

Cubs | Kris Bryant belts another spring HR

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 22:14:14 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant belted his ninth homer run of the spring Tuesday, March 24, against the Oakland Athletics in Cactus League action.

Fantasy Tip: Bryant is expected to spend the first nine days of the regular season with Triple-A Iowa, buying the organization an extra year of service time. He is still worth a middle-round draft pick in all fantasy formats because of his power potential. He could be dinging homers off of the gaudy new scoreboard in left field at Wrigley Field all summer.

Cubs | Kris Bryant to the outfield?

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 17:51:03 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Kris Bryant is likely to play in the outfield in the next couple of days. Manager Joe Maddon indicated he's going to try to get hm into the game as an outfielder in that time frame. Bryant made his third error playing third base this spring Tuesday, March 24. The Cubs claim he's still their third baseman of the future.

Fantasy Tip: The Cubs have an embarrassment of young infield talent, and an outfield move for Bryant is something that has been speculated. He'll be third base eligible this year and gaining outfield eligibility would be a nice bonus. He's a thoroughly hyped power-hitting prospect who is worth drafting in all leagues, but he'll likely require an early-round pick.

Cubs | Javier Baez will make Cubs roster

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 17:37:19 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez said Tuesday, March 24, he's been told he'll be on the opening day roster. A team official confirmed that Baez was told he'll make the team as the second baseman. Baez is 5-for-39 with 14 strikeouts this spring.

Fantasy Tip: Baez's huge strikeout rate is likely to make him a batting average liability, but he has monster power. His middle infield eligibility could lead drafters to reach on his potential, but it's best not to overdraft him given the risk of him being overwhelmed by big league pitching. His upside does make him worth a late-round pick if he falls, though.
