White Sox | Chicago considering Ian Desmond

Thu, 11 Feb 2016 12:37:15 -0800

Free-agent SS Ian Desmond (Nationals) is on the radar of several teams, including the Chicago White Sox.

Fantasy Tip: Desmond batted .233 with 19 home runs and 62 RBI for Washington last season. Chicago has only Tyler Saladino and Andy Parrino at shortstop right now, so Desmond would have to be considered a favorite to start. As a power hitter at a traditionally weak-hitting position playing half of his games at U.S. Cellular Field, the 30-year-old could see a nice boost in value and be a low-end fantasy starter.

White Sox | Mat Latos financials

Tue, 09 Feb 2016 11:38:56 -0800

Updating a previous report, Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal Tuesday, Feb. 9, according to a major league source. Latos went 4-10 with a 4.95 ERA with the Miami Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 24 outings last year.

Fantasy Tip: Latos is likely to be in competition with the likes of John Danks, Erik Johnson and Jacob Turner for a final spot in the starting rotation. Latos could win it on experience alone. Injuries have hurt him the last two seasons, so a bounce-back season could be on the horizon, but a move to a hitter-friendly park will draw most fantasy owners away.

White Sox | Mat Latos joining Chicago

Tue, 09 Feb 2016 10:58:39 -0800

Free-agent SP Mat Latos (Dodgers) agreed to an undisclosed deal with the Chicago White Sox Tuesday, Feb. 9.

Fantasy Tip: Latos figures to compete for a starting rotation spot this spring. The move to U.S. Cellular Field -- more of a hitter's haven -- isn't ideal for Latos, though. Injuries have dragged him down the last two years, too. If he wins a rotation spot he's worth a gamble as a late-rounder in deep mixed leagues.

White Sox | Carson Fulmer could arrive in 2017

Sun, 07 Feb 2016 08:58:14 -0800

Chicago White Sox minor league SP Carson Fulmer could arrive in the majors by 2017, according to general manager Rick Hahn.

Fantasy Tip: The White Sox appear to be really high on Fulmer, their first-round selection in the 2015 draft, and Hahn wouldn't rule out a late-2016 promotion if he pushes the envelope with a strong performance this year. In nine appearances at the Rookie and Class A levels in 2015, Fulmer posted a 1.96 ERA and struck out 26 batters over 23 innings. Owners in AL-only and dynasty leagues should monitor the 22-year-old right-hander's progress throughout the season.

White Sox | No match for Andre Ethier with White Sox

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 07:10:50 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Andre Ethier has been the subject of trade discussions by the Chicago White Sox, who have had trouble finding a match to acquire him.

Fantasy Tip: Ethier is a depth outfielder in fantasy that will likely sit out against left-handers.

White Sox | Chicago looking at Andre Ethier

Mon, 01 Feb 2016 15:21:35 -0800

The Chicago White Sox are exploring a trade for Los Angeles Dodgers OF Andre Ethier.

Fantasy Tip: Ethier, who'll be 34 this year, has essentially become a platoon player against right-handed pitching at this stage of his career. In limited at-bats he was quite effective in 2015 (.294 average, 14 home runs), and he could see an even bigger role in a much more friendly hitter's park if he landed in Chicago. Ethier would still likely be more of outfield depth in deep mixed leagues, though.

White Sox | Adam LaRoche not guaranteed starting job

Sun, 31 Jan 2016 07:09:51 -0800

Chicago White Sox DH/1B Adam LaRoche will have to earn his job as the team's starting designated hitter in spring training, according to manager Robin Ventura.

Fantasy Tip: LaRoche had an abysmal season at the plate last year, batting just .207 with 12 home runs and 44 RBIs in 429 at-bats while striking out 133 times. However, he could be worth a late-round flier in AL-only and cavernous mixed fantasy leagues due to the improved offensive protection in the White Sox lineup.

White Sox | ChiSox to have battle for No. 5 spot

Sat, 30 Jan 2016 11:36:18 -0800

Chicago White Sox SPs Jacob Turner and Erik Johnson are expected to compete for the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation during spring training, assuming no other offseason moves are made.

Fantasy Tip: Whoever wins the battle between Turner and Johnson is projected to be the sole right-handed starter in Chicago's rotation, along with SPs Chris Sale, Carlos Rodon, Jose Quintana and John Danks. Both righties are worth monitoring as potential late-round fliers for AL-only fantasy leagues.

White Sox | Tyler Saladino to start at shortstop

Sat, 30 Jan 2016 11:19:29 -0800

Chicago White Sox SS Tyler Saladino is expected to be the team's starting shortstop in 2016, assuming that no additional offseason moves are made.

Fantasy Tip: Saladino played in 11 games at shortstop last season, receiving seven starts. The 26-year-old hit just .225 with four home runs, 20 RBIs and eight steals in 68 games overall, while seeing most of his action at the hot corner. Saladino should only be viewed as infield depth in AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues.

White Sox | Adam Eaton rehab update

Sat, 30 Jan 2016 10:16:34 -0800

Chicago White Sox OF Adam Eaton (shoulder) has been able to participate in his normal offseason conditioning program after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder in October. He is expected to be ready for spring training camp, even though he has experienced some fatigue and loss of muscle mass.

Fantasy Tip: Eaton hit .287 with 14 home runs, 56 RBIs and 18 RBIs in 153 regular-season games last year. He should be selected in the middle rounds of drafts for AL-only and deep mixed fantasy leagues.

White Sox | Avisail Garcia trying for consistency

Fri, 29 Jan 2016 16:59:19 -0800

Chicago White Sox OF Avisail Garcia is in excellent shape and is 20 pounds lighter than he was at the end of the 2015 season and has a new plan in place for the 2016 season with the help of hitting coach Todd Steverson. Garcia said he has worked with Steverson on finding a consistent stance.

"You have more chances when you swing at strikes because you can see, when I swing at strikes, I can hit like the start of the season. I know I can do better. That's why I've been preparing myself. When you work hard and prepare for something, you don't have a chance to fall. Prepare yourself, be focused and play every game right," Garcia said.

Fantasy Tip: You won't have to pay much for a potential rebound season from Garcia in fantasy drafts in the late rounds of deep mixed leagues. He's still only 24, too, so he could develop more power, and he's in the perfect environment for it in a lineup that is boosted by the arrival of Brett Lawrie and Todd Frazier. Definitely post-hype sleeper potential here at a cheap price.

White Sox | Avisail Garcia looking to steal more bases

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 17:49:59 -0800

Chicago White Sox OF Avisail Garcia is hoping to be a viable threat on the basepaths this season, after being successful on just seven of 14 attempts last year. He has just 14 stolen bases in 289 career MLB games but had 78 steals over seven minor league seasons, including 23 steals in 2012.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia had a somewhat disappointing 2015 campaign, batting .257 with 13 home runs and 59 RBIs in 148 regular-season games, which explains why he's trying to be more of a threat to steal bases. He should be selected in the middle rounds of AL-only leagues and the deeper rounds of mixed leagues.

White Sox | Avisail Garcia avoids arbitration

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 16:47:40 -0800

Chicago White Sox OF Avisail Garcia avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal with the team worth $2.1 million.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia had a decent 2015 season when he recorded a .257 batting average with 13 home runs. He should be in the starting lineup most of the time this season and could be a late-round options in deeper mixed leagues as well as a fine AL-only league option.

White Sox | Yoenis Cespedes with South Side interest?

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 10:42:43 -0800

Free-agent OF Yoenis Cespedes (Mets) could be an option for the Chicago White Sox if he would consider a three-year deal or shorter.

Fantasy Tip: Cespedes is a legit OF2 in fantasy with big power potential.

White Sox | Brett Lawrie avoids arbitration

Thu, 14 Jan 2016 15:34:16 -0800

Chicago White Sox 2B Brett Lawrie avoided arbitration Thursday, Jan. 14, by agreeing on a one-year, $4.125 million deal.

Fantasy Tip: Lawrie will likely be Chicago's starting second baseman this year, but he'll maintain third base eligibility, too. He was finally able to stay healthy over a full season and set career highs in home runs (16) and RBI (60) with the Oakland Athletics. He could best those numbers in a better hitting environment in Chicago with another healthy season.
