Cincinnati Reds news, rumors and injuries

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart (knee) left the game Sunday, May 1, against the Pittsburgh Pirates with an apparent right knee injury. Cozart, who reached on an error to start the top of the eighth inning but was met by a trainer at second base shortly thereafter, appeared to point to his right knee before walking off the field.
Fantasy Tip: There is reason for concern here since it is the same knee Cozart had ACL surgery on last season. The 30-year-old just wrapped up an incredible April atop the Reds' order, batting .361 with two homers, nine RBI and 13 runs scored. Ivan De Jesus replaced him in the field and would be a big drop-off offensively, as he entered Sunday hitting .133.

Cincinnati Reds SP Raisel Iglesias (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, May 1, because of right shoulder impingement. The team recalled SP Tim Adleman from Class AAA Louisville. The team also transferred C Kyle Skipworth (ankle) from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
Fantasy Tip: Tim Adleman is scheduled to start Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates and could stay in the starting rotation if he has a solid outing. Adleman could be valuable in NL-only leagues if he receives multiple starts but probably is not a great option in deeper mixed leagues. Robert Stephenson is also an option to join the rotation while Iglesias is sidelined. He posted solid numbers in his two starts earlier in the season and could be an option for owners on NL-only leagues and some deeper mixed leagues if he joins the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Barnhart is batting .308 with three doubles and four RBI through 39 at-bats and should be viewed as a value play in daily fantasy games. On the other hand, Mesoraco has played just twice in the past week and is batting .140 with one RBI through 50 at-bats. He should be avoided in all fantasy formats for now.

Fantasy Tip: The team doesn't think Iglesias will need the disabled list, which is encouraging. Melville carried a 0-1 record and 11.00 major league ERA, so he carries no fantasy value at this time.

Fantasy Tip: Hamilton's average improved to .218, which illustrates his biggest problem. Hamilton is strong when on the basepaths, but getting him on base is the big issue. If Hamilton ever figures it out all the way, he could be a very dangerous player.

Cincinnati Reds SP Alfredo Simon dropped to 0-3 on the year in a 5-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday, April 30. Simon allowed three runs in over six innings, walked four and struck out four.
Fantasy Tip: Simon's ERA dropped from 16.39 to 13.50, which means he's still not out of the woods yet for fantasy players. Not only does Simon not have a victory, he has gotten off to a subpar start. Leave him off your roster until Simon stabilizes further.

Cincinnati Reds SP Anthony DeSclafani (oblique) felt discomfort in his side during his rehab start Friday, April 29. "(He) just hasn't gotten to where he's sensation-free and we're not going to push him through it," manager Bryan Price said. "We're really doing everything we can to avoid a setback. He was good until the last inning or so, and then it was an issue."
Fantasy Tip: DeSclafani's status is unclear, but he will likely have to make another rehab start without feeling the sensation in his oblique. He showed flashes early last season before eventually tailing off. He's really only an NL-only commodity.

Cincinnati Reds SP Raisel Iglesias (shoulder) may miss his start Sunday, May 1, after he felt a pinch in his right shoulder Friday, April 29. He was examined Saturday, April 30. Class AAA Louisville scratched SP Tim Adleman Saturday in case he has to come up to start Sunday.
Fantasy Tip: From the sounds of it, you can pretty much assume Iglesias will at least have his start pushed back. Keep tabs on whether this will require a DL stint. Adleman is 2-0 with a 4.24 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP at Louisville. He's not worth consideration if he starts Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco is not believed to be injured but he is off to another poor start offensively this year, batting .140 with one RBI in 50 at-bats. On the other hand, Barnhart is hitting .333 with four RBI and 36 at-bats and is worth considering as a value play in daily fantasy contests.

Fantasy Tip: Duvall is 4-for-9 with a pair of doubles versus left-handed pitching this season and is a viable option for daily fantasy players searching for an inexpensive flier for the outfield.

Cincinnati Reds SP Jon Moscot (shoulder) is expected to make his next scheduled start against the San Francisco Giants Tuesday, May 3, despite being bothered by pain in his left arm during his most recent outing versus the New York Mets Wednesday, April 27.
Fantasy Tip: Moscot is a right-handed pitcher, which explains why he isn't in danger of missing any starts. He is 0-2 with a 4.02 ERA through three outings but has walked nine batters through 15 2/3 innings while striking out just six. He is not a recommended option in any fantasy format versus the Giants.

Cincinnati Reds SP Anthony DeSclafani (oblique) tossed five scoreless innings in his second rehab start for Class A Dayton Friday, April 29. He allowed three hits and one walk while striking out five batters.
Fantasy Tip: DeSclafani's next start could come at the MLB level at some point next week. He should remain stashed in NL-only and deep mixed leagues but daily fantasy gamers are advised to avoid using him in his first start or two after coming off the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Despite taking the loss, this was Straily's first outing of the year where he made it into the sixth inning. He's worth considering as a viable pitching option for NL-only leagues and a value play for daily fantasy games.
Fri, 29 Apr 2016 12:16:36 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Mesoraco is just 7-for-50 to start the season with a single extra-base hit and only one RBI. It isn't out of the question to replace him in shallow leagues given the poor production. There is plenty of upside, though. Mesoraco hit 25 home runs with a .273/.359/.534 slash line in 2014, after all. Barnhart is off to a strong start (11-for-32) and makes for a potential low-priced flier in daily contests Friday.
Fri, 29 Apr 2016 12:11:53 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Bruce looks poised for a rebound season, as he sits with four home runs and 15 RBI through his first 19 games. He is a viable outfielder in all fantasy formats and a potential flier in daily contests Friday. Remember, even with consecutive down seasons, Bruce averaged 26 bombs and 80 RBI per year entering 2016.
