Colorado Rockies news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Injuries have derailed Gonzalez the past two years, but when healthy, he was a safe bet for 20-plus homers and 20-plus steals. If he is still on the board come the fifth round of fantasy drafts, the upside is worth the risk.

Fantasy Tip: Dickerson ($5,300, 10.6% of your cap) said he would play through it if it were the regular season. So there is little cause for concern. He's a midrange OF option on FantasyScore.

Colorado Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez (knee) was removed from a Cactus League game against the San Diego Padres Friday, March 27, because of soreness in his surgically-repaired left knee. He began experiencing pain after catching a fly ball off the bat of 3B Will Middlebrooks in the third inning but remained in the game for his next at-bat before leaving. Gonzalez claimed the injury was "nothing major," although he is scheduled to be re-evaluated Saturday, March 28.
Fantasy Tip: It sounds as though Gonzalez was removed from Friday's game as a precautionary measure, although this situation still bears monitoring, given his injury history. When healthy, he is one of fantasy baseball's elite outfielders and a sure-fire first-round draft pick.

Fantasy Tip: Gray and Butler have the fantasy upside, with the former being the team's top pitching prospect. Although until there is an official announcement, it is difficult to roster any of the four outside of NL-only formats, especially pitching their home games at Coors Field. It is a situation to monitor, and if Gray or Butler win the job, they could warrant a late-round flier in deep mixed leagues.

Colorado Rockies SP Jorge De La Rosa (groin) appears bound to begin the regular season on the disabled list because of recurring tightness in his right groin. Although manager Walt Weiss is not going to make an official announcement until he has to, De La Rosa has been limited to playing catch and is not scheduled for any bullpen sessions. Weiss also noted the injury may be a long-term issue. "This is something he's had several times before, so you can categorize it as being chronic," Weiss said. "That being the case, we want to make sure he's good to go so this thing doesn't pop up again."
Fantasy Tip: De La Rosa's wins are nice, but they come with awful ratios, as he has averaged a 6.4 K/9, a 3.81 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP over the past two seasons. Add this injury scare and pitching his home games in Coors Field, and there is little reason to roster him outside NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues, and even then he is a low-end arm.

Colorado Rockies SP Jorge De La Rosa (groin) said an MRI exam on his left groin showed "nothing bad." However, it's unknown when he will pitch in a spring game again or whether he can make his scheduled start in the team's April 10 home opener. He has dealt with groin tightness throughout the spring. De La Rosa was scheduled to play catch Monday, March 23.
Fantasy Tip: De La Rosa is mainly an NL-only fantasy commodity. He's pitching in one of the best hitter's parks in the league, and he often struggles with control, making him wildly unpredictable. After a career-high 9.4 K/9 in 2009, De La Rosa has also become less of a strikeout pitcher.

Fantasy Tip: Tulo checks in as our second ranked fantasy baseball shortstop, and he could easily be the most valuable player at the 6 before the year is up. That's assuming he's healthy, though. There is an abundance or risk and reward with Tulowitzki, and you'll have to take him in the early rounds in drafts.

Fantasy Tip: Any fantasy value De La Rosa had likely declined for the time being. Despite having 15 victories on average each season, this could be an issue that hampers the Rockies standout for a while. It's best to avoid De La Rosa for this reason.

Fantasy Tip: No word yet on where Chacin will go, but he could improve pitching away from the pinball machine known as Coors Field. He was projected for around 25-30 starts this year so Chacin does eat innings. Wait and see where Chacin lands before spending a late-round pick.

Fantasy Tip: Restrict De La Rosa to NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues, and he only offers low-end value in those formats. While the 33-year-old lefty has averaged 15 wins the past two seasons, his 6.4 K/9, 3.81 ERA and 1.31 WHIP are undesirable returns in the majority of formats. Add the Coors Field factor, and De La Rosa is likely best avoided.

Colorado Rockies SP Jordan Lyles is honing the split-fingered changeup that he developed last summer into more of a strikeout pitch this spring. Lyles has struck out six batters in seven Cactus League innings after managing a career-high 6.2 strikeouts per nine innings in 2014. He also has given up 1.39 ground balls for every fly ball in his career. "Of my strikeouts this spring, I want to say 75% (of the put-away pitches) have been changeups," said Lyles. "That tells me it's a little more difficult to see."
Fantasy Tip: Lyles is far from a household fantasy name, but he might be worth throwing a few bucks at in deep mixed leagues to see if he can keep up his strikeout potential with a new and improved pitch. His ground-ball profile should help him succeed at Coors Field, too.

Fantasy Tip: Car-Go is the ultimate definition of risk-reward. He hasn't played in more than 145 games in his career, and he hasn't eclipsed 127 games played in any of the last four seasons due to various ailments. However, when he's healthy, he's perhaps the most consistent and valuable fantasy outfielders out there, and he hits in the best hitter's park in the league. In any event, he's an early-round target because of his upside when he's on the field.

Fantasy Tip: JDLR holds a 45-14 lifetime record at Coors Field, so FantasyScore owners will certainly want to remember him at just $4,700 (or 9.4% of cap).

Fantasy Tip: At just $3,700 (or 7.4% of cap), Kendrick is attractive from a salary perspective. However, he faces a solid lineup in a road game, and FantasyScore would be wise to avoid him.

Colorado Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez is more under control at the plate this year, and his leg kick isn't as high. "He's more under control, and he's feeling right now that he can control the at-bats," hitting coach Blake Doyle said. "I'm looking for a lot of big things out of him this year." Gonzalez also said that he'll give consideration to laying down bunts and hitting to the left side to beat defensive shifts when the situation dictates it in 2015.
Fantasy Tip: With Car-Go, there is plenty of risk and plenty of reward. He hasn't played more than 145 games in his career, and he played in only 70 games in 2014 due to injury. However, if he can stay healthy, Gonzalez will be well worth his early-round price in fantasy drafts.
