Colorado Rockies news, rumors and injuries

Colorado Rockies OF Gerardo Parra, 2B DJ LeMahieu and C Tony Wolters are not in the starting lineup against San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner Saturday, May 28. OF Ryan Raburn will bat sixth and play left field, INF Cristhian Adames will play second base and bat seventh and C Dustin Garneau will start behind the plate and bat eighth.
Fantasy Tip: Raburn is 10-for-27 (.370) with three home runs and 10 RBI at home this year but is just 1-for-6 in his career versus Bumgarner, making him a risky play in DFS this afternoon. Adames (2-for-3) and Garneau (1-for-3) have enjoyed modest success against the veteran lefty but shouldn't be viewed as much more than potential sources of salary cap relief.

Colorado Rockies SP Tyler Chatwood earned his sixth win of the season on Friday, May 27, against the San Francisco Giants. He pitched seven innings, allowed four hits and one unearned run. Chatwood entered play with a 1-3 record and 6.65 ERA in four previous starts at Coors Field.
Fantasy Tip: This was a big deal for Chatwood, who has been exceptional on the road (4-0, 0.53 ERA in five starts) but brutal at home. He showed signs of turning things around in his last home start (three runs allowed in seven innings in a win over the Mets), but this was real dominance. Although there are plenty of reasons to question Colorado starters, Chatwood was done enough to earn a spot even in standard mixed leagues.

Fantasy Tip: With both outings taking place at hitter-friendly Coors Field, neither Butler or Rusin are viable options in the majority of fantasy formats. After all, Butler has a career 6.70 ERA through 48 1/3 innings at Coors, and Rusin has a 5.95 mark through 84 2/3 innings.

Fantasy Tip: Gray has earned quality starts in four of his last five appearances, although his 5.95 ERA through seven outings will scare some fantasy owners away. He has a favorable matchup for his next scheduled start against the Cincinnati Reds Tuesday, May 31.

Fantasy Tip: Descalso is nothing more than a desperation source of cap relief in daily contests Thursday. Through his seven-year career, he has an unimpressive .239/.310/.339 slash line.

Fantasy Tip: Lemahieu's fantasy value jumps significantly if he sticks in the two-hole, as his on-base skills and plus-speed fit the role nicely. And obviously, hitting in front of the two best hitters on the team will help him pad the run column. He is a viable option at the keystone in the majority of seasonal leagues and currently sits with a respectable 24 runs, two home runs, 14 RBI, five stolen bases and .307/.361/.427 slash line.

Fantasy Tip: Story sat Wednesday, May 25, and he has struck out in six of his past eight at-bats, so perhaps dropping him in the lineup might ease some of the pressure to reach base. Still, peaks and valleys are part of the package with rookies, and to date, Story has been exceptional with a .272/.327/.578 slash line and 12 home runs. Continue to view him as a solid starting shortstop in all formats.

Colorado Rockies C Nick Hundley (oblique) hit in the batting cages for the first time Wednesday, May 25. He will take regular batting practice for the next two days and then be re-examined when the Rockies go back home Friday, May 27. Hundley could go on a rehab assignment next week.
Fantasy Tip: Oblique injuries are tricky, so Hundley won't be rushed back by Colorado. Hundley has found a home in Colorado, though, and he'll be a serviceable low-end catcher in mixed leagues when he returns if you're looking for help. Dustin Garneau and Tony Wolters have been splitting duties behind the plate in the meantime, but neither backstop is very attractive outside of two-catcher and deep NL-only leagues.

Fantasy Tip: It was only a matter of time for De La Rosa, who was sporting a horrendous 11.41 ERA and 2.28 WHIP in six starts for the Rockies this year after getting blasted by the Red Sox in his first start off the DL last night. He shouldn't be owned anywhere. Rusin has a 3.93 ERA in four starts for Colorado this year. He should only be an option for the desperate in NL-only leagues with a career 5.9 strikeouts per nine innings.
Wed, 25 May 2016 13:15:12 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Motte has potential to work his way into some save situations down the line, but for now, he is nothing more than a desperation stash in cavernous mixed and NL-only formats. And while Jake McGee is a prime trade candidate, there is no guarantee Motte emerges as his successor.

Colorado Rockies SP Jorge De La Rosa (groin) started his first game in almost a month after being activated from the disabled list and struggled Tuesday, May 24, against the Boston Red Sox. He lasted only 3 1/3 innings, surrendering seven runs on nine hits and three walks, while striking out only one.
Fantasy Tip: De La Rosa has been the definition of abysmal in 2016, as he's made it beyond the fourth inning only once this season in six starts. At this point, he should only be taking up a roster spot in deep NL-only leagues in case he's able to get into a rhythm but right now, the thought of starting him while he's struggling like this just seems laughable.

Colorado Rockies OF Ryan Raburn is in the starting lineup Tuesday, May 24, against the Boston Red Sox as a designated hitter. Raburn will hit sixth against Red Sox SP David Price. His on-base plus slugging number is 1.061 against left-handed pitching.
Fantasy Tip: Raburn is hitting .300-5-12 overall, and his other stats rise against left-handed pitching. He should be given strong fantasy consideration against Price Tuesday night for that reason.
Tue, 24 May 2016 13:19:17 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Wolters is out mainly due to the left vs. left matchup, although Wolters and Garneau are in a platoon situation and neither one catches a majority of games. Garneau doesn't have much fantasy value, so you should look elsewhere for a catcher.
Tue, 24 May 2016 11:13:05 -0700
Colorado Rockies SP Jeff Hoffman could be promoted to the major leagues soon. He has a 2.70 ERA in his first nine starts in the Pacific Coast League. Hoffman was the centerpiece of the trade that sent SS Troy Tulowitzki to the Toronto Blue Jays.
Fantasy Tip: Hoffman also has 49 strikeouts in 53 1/3 innings. He's recovered from Tommy John surgery in 2014 and has a dominant high-90s heater and mixed in good offspeed pitches, including a wipeout hard curveball as an out pitch. As with most youngsters, his command is spotty, but he has top-of-the-rotation stuff. Keep tabs on him in keeper/dynasty formats.

Fantasy Tip: Blackmon got out to a woeful start this year, but he's picked it up considerably since then to lift his batting average up over .300. He's been especially efficient as of late, hitting .364 over his last five ballgames. As long as he remains the leadoff man in Colorado's dangerous batting order, he's someone that should always be on starting rosters in fantasy.
