Detroit Tigers news, rumors and injuries

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (knee) said his knee is feeling "fine," and he could return to the team by the end of the week. He caught in a minor league rehab game with Class AAA Toledo on back-to-back nights Sunday, June 28, and Monday, June 29. "I feel fine, I feel good," Avila said Monday night, after Toledo's 4-1 victory. "My knee feels good. My legs feel good. I have no complaints after today." He plans to be the designated hitter Tuesday, June 30, and catching again for Toledo Wednesday, July 1.
Fantasy Tip: Avila ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) will likely be eased back into the catching duties when he returns, meaning James McCann ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) will still have a role. Avila isn't known for his bat, and he was hitting just .200 (12-for-60) before getting hurt. He'll be a weak FantasyScore option most nights, and he's only worth owning in two-catcher or AL-only leagues.

Fantasy Tip: After battling injuries to start the year, Martinez ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) is starting to round into form. As long as he is healthy, he is a solid mid-priced option at FantasyScore against most matchups.

Detroit Tigers C James McCann went 2-for-4 with a game-winning, solo home run and two runs scored in a 5-4 win over the Chicago White Sox Sunday, June 28, and he joined retired OF Tim Salmon as the only players with at least two game-winning home runs in the first 61 games of their career.
Fantasy Tip: Despite the walk-off homer, McCann ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) hasn't been doing much this month. His big games are too sporadic to warrant consideration at FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: McCann ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) is only batting .193 during the month of June but he is 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in his career against Danks. That small sample size probably isn't enough to justify starting him in FantasyScore today.

Detroit Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos is sticking at third base despite a surge by SS Andrew Romine lately. Romine was 6-for-15 (.400) in the last four games with three doubles, two home runs and three RBI, while Castellanos is hitting only .224 with 10 doubles, four triples and four home runs with 28 RBI in 70 games this year. "I think he's going to be fine," manager Brad Ausmus said of Castellanos. "He looked better the last few days after taking the better part of three games off. ... Sometimes you get paralyzed when you're trying to fix everything. You're trying to fix your hands, fix your feet. You get paralyzed because you're thinking about everything except the one thing you should be thinking about and that's the ball."
Fantasy Tip: Castellanos ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) isn't out of the woods yet after getting two hits Thursday. Those in need of middle infield help in AL-only leagues should stash Romine ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) just in case. Tonight on FantasyScore, Castellanos could pay off as a sleeper pick, as he's hitting .295 (13-for-44) against southpaws this season. He's facing Chicago White Sox starter Jose Quintana.

Detroit Tigers SP Alfredo Simon allowed five runs and six hits while walking three and striking out five in 6 1/3 innings Thursday, June 25, and he has given up 12 runs in his last nine innings. Simon said he felt fine in his outing yesterday compared to his last start.
Fantasy Tip: Simon ($5,400, 10.8% of cap) is sporting a 3.57 ERA and 1.27 WHIP while striking out only 6.6 per nine innings over 14 starts (85 2/3 innings) this season. He was due for some correction to his line after a very strong start to the year, and he's now allowed at least four earned runs in three of his five starts in June. Consider Simon strictly a matchup play on FantasyScore when facing a favorable team in a pitching-friendly environment.

Fantasy Tip: Verlander ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) would be set up to face the Pittsburgh Pirates at home next Tuesday if he doesn't suffer any setbacks before then. After his first two starts left plenty to be desired, it's smart to stay away from him for at least one more turn through at FantasyScore.

Detroit Tigers OF J.D. Martinez hit a two-run home run, his 18th of the season, in a losing effort Thursday, June 25, and he now has five home runs and 10 RBI in his last four games. Martinez finished the day 1-for-5 with a run scored, two RBI and two strikeouts. His season average sits at .270.
Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) has already proven that his 2014 season was not a fluke, and he's a much more mechanically sound hitter than he was earlier in his career. He's excelling against right-handed pitching this year, too, with a .288/.333/.577 slash line against them and 16 of his 18 home runs.

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (knee) will begin a rehab assignment with Class AAA Toledo Friday, June 26, and manager Brad Ausmus said Avila will alternate catching the first six days. He will be evaluated next week.
Fantasy Tip: Avila ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) had only 12 hits in 60 at-bats (.200) with two home runs and eight RBI before going down with a knee injury this year. He has very little power and will be a weaker catching option on FantasyScore when he returns. He's only worth rostering in AL-only leagues or formats that require two starting catchers.

Fantasy Tip: Ryan ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) is coming off back-to-back rough outings and is sporting a 3.91 ERA and has just 10 strikeouts in 23 innings pitched over three starts. There's very little upside to him for FantasyScore users, although the White Sox rank dead last in OPS against lefties this year (.559).

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander (back) isn't believed to be dealing with a serious injury, and the Tigers are taking a cautious approach with the pitcher since he got off to a late start to the season after suffering a triceps injury in spring training. Manager Brad Ausmus is unsure when Verlander will make his next start, but the team is hoping he'll only miss one turn through the rotation, and it's possible he could start this weekend against the Chicago White Sox. Verlander gave up six runs in 6 2/3 innings in his last start against the New York Yankees last Friday.
Fantasy Tip: Verlander ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) has not looked sharp in his two starts this season, posting a 6.17 ERA with just four strikeouts in 11 2/3 innings. If he does only miss one start, you'll want to hold off from using him on FantasyScore until he shows better results and proves he's fully healthy.

Fantasy Tip: Gose ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) is hitting only .161 (10-for-62) in the month of June and has faded quickly after a hot start to the season. Davis ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) could start seeing more playing time in this platoon in center field. Davis is mainly reliant on stolen bases on FantasyScore, and he faces a tough matchup against Carrasco Wednesday afternoon.
Wed, 24 Jun 2015 06:41:31 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Romine ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) is 5-for-12 with two homers in his last three games. They're finding ways to keep him in the lineup. Maybe you should find a spot for him on FantasyScore today against Carlos Carrasco.
Tue, 23 Jun 2015 21:47:15 -0700
Detroit Tigers SP David Price allowed just one run over 6 2/3 innings Tuesday, June 23, against the Cleveland Indians. He also struck out seven batters. Price is now 9-1 over his past 11 outings against the Indians, including a shutout June 12.
Fantasy Tip: Price ($9,200; or 18.4% of cap) is a must-start FantasyScore option lately, but especially any time he faces the Indians.

Fantasy Tip: Farmer could stick around and work in middle relief this time around. Those in need of a short-term AL-only replacement might want to look Farmer's way, as the Tigers have been unstoppable against the Indians over the past couple of seasons.
