Tigers | Justin Verlander to DL?

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 13:08:03 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander (triceps) could start the season on the disabled list, as manager Brad Ausmus told media "if we have to use it we could" when discussing Verlander's injury.

Fantasy Tip: Verlander ($6,500 FantasyScore, 13% of cap) would likely have his stint back-dated, which means he might miss one turn at most before going back in. He's still a solid draft in most leagues, but keep an eye on the triceps discomfort if it continues.

Tigers | Justin Verlander scratched Thursday

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 10:50:35 -0700

Updating previous reports, Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander (triceps) will not make his spring start against the New York Yankees Thursday, April 2. Verlander said he remains sore Monday, March 30, after suffering from cramping in his right triceps muscle during his outing last Friday. SP Anibal Sanchez will likely be the team's No. 2 starter to open the season if Verlander is not ready. Verlander said he is day-to-day right now.

Fantasy Tip: The Tigers will likely err on the side of cautious with Verlander ($6,500, 13.0% of cap), who dealt with injuries for much of last season, too. Consider him a shaky option at FantasyScore to start the season if he's skipped, but Verlander could be a nice matchup play in 2015.

Tigers | Justin Verlander unlikely for Thursday

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 09:57:23 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander (triceps) is not throwing Monday, March 30, and it looks like he won't make his spring start Thursday, April 2. Verlander said he currently is day-to-day to see when he throws again.

Fantasy Tip: It's becoming increasingly likely that Verlander ($6,500, 13.0% of cap) won't make his first start of the regular season, even though his injury isn't believed to be very serious. The injury so close to the regular season won't make him an attractive option at FantasyScore in his first start, either.

Tigers | Justin Verlander could be pushed back

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 09:13:56 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander (triceps) could have his first scheduled start of the season April 8 pushed back to April 12 against the Cleveland Indians, according to manager Brad Ausmus. Verlander's injury is being described as a triceps cramp, but the team hasn't ruled out that it could have been a strain. Verlander doesn't seem very concerned about his injury.

Fantasy Tip: Verlander's ($6,500, 13.0% of cap) injury doesn't seem to be very serious at all, and worst-case scenario right now is that he has his first start of the season skipped. Because of the injury and his very mediocre spring stats, most owners at FantasyScore will likely want to avoid his first start of the 2015 season.

Tigers | Justin Verlander throws Sunday

Sun, 29 Mar 2015 08:56:55 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander (triceps) threw light toss Sunday, March 29, according to manager Brad Ausmus. Ausmus said Verlander's triceps is still a little tight but not too bad. Verlander is still scheduled to start Thursday, April 2, at this time.

Fantasy Tip: Verlander ($6,500, 13.0% of cap) is trying to work his way through the injury, so owners should continue to monitor the situation. Verlander does not appear to be dealing with a serious injury but he could miss a start or two if it lingers. Owners on FantasyScore may want to avoid him until his status is known.

Tigers | Justin Verlander not concerned

Sat, 28 Mar 2015 09:02:11 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander (triceps) will not do any throwing Saturday, March 28, but said he is not very concerned about the cramping in his triceps. Verlander did not have to undergo an MRI on his triceps and believes he will make his next spring training start. He did say his triceps was still sore Saturday.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should monitor the situation to see if the injury becomes a lingering problem. Verlander ($6,500, 13.0% of cap) had a down year in 2014 with a 4.54 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. Owners on FantasyScore may want to see how he pitches in his first few starts before considering him for their lineup.

Tigers | Justin Verlander leaves early

Fri, 27 Mar 2015 11:24:24 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander (triceps) left his spring start early with a cramp in his right triceps muscle Friday, March 27, but he isn't expected to miss his next start.

Fantasy Tip: The Tigers were likely being cautious with Verlander, who wasn't healthy at all for much of the 2014 season. His velocity was up Friday in his outing, which is an encouraging sign that he could rebound from his poor 2014. Many will likely be scared off by Verlander, meaning he could be a bargain in the later rounds of drafts.

Tigers | Justin Verlander's velocity up

Fri, 27 Mar 2015 10:42:18 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander was hitting 95-96 mph regularly with his fastball in the first inning of his outing Friday, March 27.

Fantasy Tip: It's a good sign for Verlander, who wasn't healthy last spring and for much of the 2014 season. A healthy core should go a long way in keeping his fastball strong this year. However, his spring results haven't been impressive. He'll continue to come at a bargain in the later rounds of mixed league drafts, and he's worth taking a chance on to round out your staff.

Tigers | J.D. Martinez hasn't slowed down

Fri, 27 Mar 2015 10:34:01 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF J.D. Martinez hit .315 in 123 games last year for the Tigers, and he has continued to spray line drives all over the field this spring. He has moved from left field to right field to make room for OF Yoenis Cespedes.

Fantasy Tip: What everyone wants to know is can Martinez do it again in 2015? His spring results should have you optimistic, but don't overvalue him in fantasy drafts just because of his impressive 2014 season.

Tigers | Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez go deep

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 14:03:31 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (foot, ankle) and DH Victor Martinez (knee) both hit home runs in the spring game Thursday, March 26. Cabrera's home run was a line drive that looked like his swings from two or three years ago. He also nearly homered on a sacrifice fly to right field in the game. Cabrera will take the day off Friday, March 27, before playing in three straight games.

Fantasy Tip: It's great news to see both Miggy and V-Mart go deep in the same game after they were both behind in spring training due to injuries. Cabrera's old line drive stroke is a welcome sight for those that selected him later in the first round of fantasy drafts. If Cabrera stays healthy, he should continue to produce like a first-rounder.

Tigers | Victor Martinez has knee soreness

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 13:39:55 -0700

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) said that he had some soreness in his left knee after the spring game Thursday, March 26, but that it's something he'll have to deal with.

Fantasy Tip: That's not exactly what you want to hear from a player coming off recent knee surgery. This could be something to monitor for V-Mart all season long. Martinez has been a consistent contributor across the board for fantasy owners in his career, and the new risk-reward profile for him could make him a value pick in drafts if he can stay healthy all year.

Tigers | Joe Nathan dealing with nail issue

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 13:37:04 -0700

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (finger) was pitching with a thumbnail issue Thursday, March 26, according to Brad Ausmus. Nathan will take the next three days off from pitching.

Fantasy Tip: Nathan's nail issue shouldn't keep him from being ready on opening day. Ausmus also suggested that Nathan doesn't have competition in the closer's role, at least not yet. Nathan still remains on shaky ground in the eyes of fantasy owners as a late-round closing source. If you can, try to handcuff Joakim Soria to the veteran pitcher.

Tigers | No competition for Joe Nathan

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 13:32:42 -0700

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan has no competition for the closer role heading into the season, according to manager Brad Ausmus.

Fantasy Tip: At age 40, Nathan is losing steam and velocity as the Tigers' closer. Many owners are skeptical of owning him for fear of injury or demotion early in the year. You can't argue with the job security Detroit is giving him to start, though, which makes him worth a late-round pick. Handcuffing him with Joakim Soria would be the ideal situation.

Tigers | Miguel Cabrera plays the field

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 16:59:40 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (foot, ankle) played first base for the first time this spring Wednesday, March 25. He made a diving stop on a hard grounder in the game and went 0-for-2 at the plate. "I'm just glad to back on the field playing first base," Cabrera said. "I can play defense and I want to be back at first. I'm seeing the ball, getting my timing down. It's a good sign."

Fantasy Tip: Cabrera ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) should be good to go for opening day, and it's a great sign that he looked good on defense today. Despite injury and aging concerns, Miggy remains a first-round pick (later in the round) in 2015 fantasy baseball drafts. You may want to shy away from him in the first week of the season at FantasyScore, though, as he gets his timing down from missing time this spring.

Tigers | David Price beginning contract talks?

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 10:04:35 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP David Price and his agent have started contract talks with the team, but no numbers have been discussed at this point.

Fantasy Tip: Price will start on opening day against the Minnesota Twins. Even at a high FantasyScore salary ($8,100, 16.2% of cap), the matchup against the Twins is favorable and one you should look to take advantage of.
