Houston Astros SP Lance McCullers (shoulder) threw 62 pitches in 4 2/3 innings in an extended spring training start Monday, May 2, and he could rejoin the rotation within a week to 10 days. McCullers' velocity was between 92 and 97 mph, according to manager A.J. Hinch. McCullers is scheduled to start next for Class AAA Fresno Saturday, May 7. He could be activated from the disabled list after one rehab start, but the Astros will be cautious with him.
Fantasy Tip: Check one last time to see if McCullers is available in your league on the waiver wire. If he is, scoop him up and stash him right away. The young righty proved last year he could eventually be a rotation ace for Houston by putting up a 3.22 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings in 22 starts.

Houston Astros OF Carlos Gomez (rib cage) could get into the game Monday, May 2, and manager A.J. Hinch said Gomez should play at some point during the series against the Minnesota Twins. Gomez is hitting just .213 with two RBI in 25 games to begin the year. There remains a chance that Gomez could land on the disabled list.
Fantasy Tip: Gomez's owners may prefer for him to go on the DL the way he's been healthy. Stay tuned for updates, but plan on sitting Gomez for a while. Preston Tucker is starting Monday night and would see a nice uptick in playing time if Gomez lands on the DL. Tucker is worth a pickup in deep mixed leagues if he becomes a regular in the outfield this month.

Fantasy Tip: The reigning AL Cy Young winner is out to a slow start, but if there's one silver lining, it's that his dominance at home is still intact. In fact, of his five starts thus far, only one has been at Minute Maid, and that was easily his best outing of the year, when he fired eight shutout innings against the Detroit Tigers. Fortunately, he'll have a favorable home assignment this evening opposite the Minnesota Twins.

Fantasy Tip: Reed is a high-end prospect with huge power potential, and he projects to join the Astros at some point this season. Houston is currently trotting out Tyler White for most games at first base, and White is slumping through a 5-for-51 stretch over his past 14 games. With Houston currently sitting in the basement of the American League West Division, Reed's promotion to the big club could come sooner than first expected. Reed is worth grabbing and stashing now in mixed leagues if you have the luxury.

Fantasy Tip: Currently mired in a 5-for-51 slump with a .396 OPS through his past 14 games, White's fantasy value is plummeting. He can't be started with confidence until he snaps his funk at the dish. Gonzalez is nothing more than a desperation flier in daily contests Monday, as he owns a .255/.294/.375 slash line against right-handed hurlers for his career.

Fantasy Tip: Gomez could be headed to the disabled list, so Tucker projects to see a nice boost in fantasy value for the immediate future. For Monday, view Tucker as a viable option in daily contests, and he is a potential add in deep mixed leagues. He is struggling to start the season with a .196/.241/.392 slash line, though.

Fantasy Tip: Gomez is off to a terrible start, but it is worth hanging on to him for a while longer to see if he can return to form. If another owner cuts him loose because of the injury, he is worth adding.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez is hitting only .222 so far this season and probably can be avoided in most fantasy leagues.

Houston Astros OF Carlos Gomez (rib cage) is not in the starting lineup against Oakland Athletics SP Rich Hill Sunday, May 1. OF Colby Rasmus will start in center field, while OF Preston Tucker will start in left field and is batting seventh in the lineup.
Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor the situation to see if Gomez will need to be placed on the 15-day disabled list. Tucker has gone 2-for-11 in his last seven days but is not a strong starting candidate in most leagues.

Houston Astros RP Ken Giles will be moved out of the eighth inning after his 9.00 ERA in his first 11 appearances. "I met with Ken and told him I am easing the burden of the eighth inning off him," manager A.J. Hinch said. "I just gave him a heads up he may not get the eighth to give him a physical, mental break. It's not an announcement as much as if it comes to the eighth and don't see Giles out there, you'll know."
Fantasy Tip: Giles has been one of the biggest pitcher busts in fantasy thus far. However, his stuff is so good that you have to ride it out. Bench him if you can.

Updating a previous report, Houston Astros OF Carlos Gomez (rib cage) is expected to miss several games because of left rib cage soreness. He sustained the injury while diving during the ninth inning of the game Friday, April 29.
Fantasy Tip: The injury does not appear to be serious enough to warrant a trip to the disabled list for Gomez, who is batting just .213 with two RBI and 24 strikeouts in 80 at-bats this year. Colby Rasmus will see the bulk of the action in center field for as long as Gomez is sidelined, with Preston Tucker seeing more action in left field as a result.

Houston Astros OF Carlos Gomez is not in the starting lineup against Oakland Athletics SP Jesse Hahn Saturday, April 30. OF Colby Rasmus will bat cleanup and play center field, while OF Preston Tucker will bat seventh and start in left field.
Fantasy Tip: It is uncertain if Gomez's absence from the lineup is related to the wrist injury he suffered after being hit by a pitch earlier this week. He is batting just .213 with two RBI in 80 at-bats this season.
Sat, 30 Apr 2016 11:02:44 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Valbuena is batting .193 with four RBI through 66 at-bats, while Castro is hitting just .128 with two RBI in 47 at-bats. Neither player should be viewed as a viable fantasy option.
Sat, 30 Apr 2016 05:41:10 -0700
Fantasy Tip: McCullers probably will need to make a few starts in the minor leagues before he is ready to return to the Astros. Owners should consider adding McCullers if he is available in their league because he posted solid numbers in 2015.
Sat, 30 Apr 2016 05:12:00 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Fiers had his longest outing of the season Friday but has allowed seven home runs in his five starts this season. He is scheduled to face the Minnesota Twins in his next start but may not be the best pitcher for owners to use in their lineups.
