Astros | Carlos Gomez still not 100%

Tue, 03 May 2016 16:37:19 -0700

Houston Astros OF Carlos Gomez (rib cage) said he's not yet 100%, "but good enough to perform tonight. I'll get back to the lineup and do my thing."

Fantasy Tip: Gomez has been out to a slow start, hitting just .213/.241/.275 with zero home runs and only two RBI in his first 80 at-bats. Even with him back in the lineup, owners may want to give him a couple of games to get in a rhythm. His return is also bad news for Preston Tucker.

Astros | Carlos Gomez returns from injury

Tue, 03 May 2016 15:10:00 -0700

Houston Astros OF Carlos Gomez (rib cage) is back in the starting lineup and is hitting seventh against Minnesota Twins SP Alex Meyer Tuesday, May 3.

Fantasy Tip: Gomez has to be one of the biggest early-season disappointments for fantasy owners with a slash line of .213/.241/.275 and no home runs, two RBI and two stolen bases in 22 games. Perhaps nagging injuries have been the culprit. Whatever the case, you can probably buy him for pennies on the dollar. Keep him out of traditional lineups until he proves his health and shows signs of life.

Astros | Evan Gattis takes a seat

Tue, 03 May 2016 15:05:29 -0700

Houston Astros OF Evan Gattis is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, May 3. OF Preston Tucker is serving as the designated hitter and is batting sixth against Minnesota Twins SP Alex Meyer.

Fantasy Tip: Assuming the rest of the roster is healthy, Tucker and Gattis are basically platooning at DH for Houston. Both feature plenty of power, with Gattis having more of it. Tucker hit his third homer of the year last night but has a .200 average on the year. Most won't be looking to him in daily games, so he could make for a sleeper contrarian pick tonight.

Astros | Dallas Keuchel struggles again

Mon, 02 May 2016 23:48:25 -0700

Houston Astros SP Dallas Keuchel allowed five runs on five hits and struck out three in 4 1/3 innings in his loss to the Minnesota Twins Monday, May 2. It ended a 17-game home winning streak. He's now 2-4 with a 5.11 ERA.

Fantasy Tip: If you own him, you don't have much choice but to wait it out. What's different between he and Adam Wainwright's struggles is that Keuchel doesn't have an extended history of success to fall back on. He faces the Seattle Mariners next, and it's worth consideration to sit him.

Astros | Lance McCullers' return coming soon

Mon, 02 May 2016 17:00:46 -0700

Houston Astros SP Lance McCullers (shoulder) threw 62 pitches in 4 2/3 innings in an extended spring training start Monday, May 2, and he could rejoin the rotation within a week to 10 days. McCullers' velocity was between 92 and 97 mph, according to manager A.J. Hinch. McCullers is scheduled to start next for Class AAA Fresno Saturday, May 7. He could be activated from the disabled list after one rehab start, but the Astros will be cautious with him.

Fantasy Tip: Check one last time to see if McCullers is available in your league on the waiver wire. If he is, scoop him up and stash him right away. The young righty proved last year he could eventually be a rotation ace for Houston by putting up a 3.22 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings in 22 starts.

Astros | Carlos Gomez could play this week

Mon, 02 May 2016 16:59:12 -0700

Houston Astros OF Carlos Gomez (rib cage) could get into the game Monday, May 2, and manager A.J. Hinch said Gomez should play at some point during the series against the Minnesota Twins. Gomez is hitting just .213 with two RBI in 25 games to begin the year. There remains a chance that Gomez could land on the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Gomez's owners may prefer for him to go on the DL the way he's been healthy. Stay tuned for updates, but plan on sitting Gomez for a while. Preston Tucker is starting Monday night and would see a nice uptick in playing time if Gomez lands on the DL. Tucker is worth a pickup in deep mixed leagues if he becomes a regular in the outfield this month.

Astros | Dallas Keuchel's perfection at home

Mon, 02 May 2016 15:40:11 -0700

Houston Astros SP Dallas Keuchel is 17-0 with a 1.47 ERA in his last 22 home starts. His last loss at Minute Maid Park came on Aug. 10, 2014.

Fantasy Tip: The reigning AL Cy Young winner is out to a slow start, but if there's one silver lining, it's that his dominance at home is still intact. In fact, of his five starts thus far, only one has been at Minute Maid, and that was easily his best outing of the year, when he fired eight shutout innings against the Detroit Tigers. Fortunately, he'll have a favorable home assignment this evening opposite the Minnesota Twins.

Astros | A.J. Reed off to solid start at Class AAA

Mon, 02 May 2016 13:36:10 -0700

Houston Astros 1B A.J. Reed has 13 runs, five doubles, five home runs and 18 RBI with a .260/.363/.519 slash line through 91 plate appearances over his first 20 games with Class AAA Fresno.

Fantasy Tip: Reed is a high-end prospect with huge power potential, and he projects to join the Astros at some point this season. Houston is currently trotting out Tyler White for most games at first base, and White is slumping through a 5-for-51 stretch over his past 14 games. With Houston currently sitting in the basement of the American League West Division, Reed's promotion to the big club could come sooner than first expected. Reed is worth grabbing and stashing now in mixed leagues if you have the luxury.

Astros | Tyler White sitting vs. Minnesota

Mon, 02 May 2016 13:21:15 -0700

Houston Astros 1B Tyler White is not in the starting lineup Monday, May 2. SS Marwin Gonzalez is starting at first base and batting seventh against Minnesota Twins SP Jose Berrios Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Currently mired in a 5-for-51 slump with a .396 OPS through his past 14 games, White's fantasy value is plummeting. He can't be started with confidence until he snaps his funk at the dish. Gonzalez is nothing more than a desperation flier in daily contests Monday, as he owns a .255/.294/.375 slash line against right-handed hurlers for his career.

Astros | Preston Tucker batting sixth vs. Twins

Mon, 02 May 2016 13:12:09 -0700

Houston Astros OF Preston Tucker is starting in left field and batting sixth against Minnesota Twins SP Jose Berrios Monday, May 2. OF Carlos Gomez (wrist) is not in the starting lineup Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Gomez could be headed to the disabled list, so Tucker projects to see a nice boost in fantasy value for the immediate future. For Monday, view Tucker as a viable option in daily contests, and he is a potential add in deep mixed leagues. He is struggling to start the season with a .196/.241/.392 slash line, though.

Astros | Carlos Gomez to be examined Monday

Sun, 01 May 2016 17:54:47 -0700

Houston Astros OF Carlos Gomez (wrist) will be examined Monday, May 2, before the team decides whether or not he needs to be placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Gomez is off to a terrible start, but it is worth hanging on to him for a while longer to see if he can return to form. If another owner cuts him loose because of the injury, he is worth adding.

Astros | Luis Valbuena on the bench

Sun, 01 May 2016 12:13:56 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena is not in the starting lineup against Oakland Athletics SP Rich Hill Sunday, May 1. SS Marwin Gonzalez will start at third base and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez is hitting only .222 so far this season and probably can be avoided in most fantasy leagues.

Astros | Carlos Gomez remains sidelined

Sun, 01 May 2016 12:12:47 -0700

Houston Astros OF Carlos Gomez (rib cage) is not in the starting lineup against Oakland Athletics SP Rich Hill Sunday, May 1. OF Colby Rasmus will start in center field, while OF Preston Tucker will start in left field and is batting seventh in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor the situation to see if Gomez will need to be placed on the 15-day disabled list. Tucker has gone 2-for-11 in his last seven days but is not a strong starting candidate in most leagues.

Astros | Ken Giles moved out of eighth inning

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 16:32:15 -0700

Houston Astros RP Ken Giles will be moved out of the eighth inning after his 9.00 ERA in his first 11 appearances. "I met with Ken and told him I am easing the burden of the eighth inning off him," manager A.J. Hinch said. "I just gave him a heads up he may not get the eighth to give him a physical, mental break. It's not an announcement as much as if it comes to the eighth and don't see Giles out there, you'll know."

Fantasy Tip: Giles has been one of the biggest pitcher busts in fantasy thus far. However, his stuff is so good that you have to ride it out. Bench him if you can.

Astros | Carlos Gomez has rib cage injury

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 11:37:44 -0700

Updating a previous report, Houston Astros OF Carlos Gomez (rib cage) is expected to miss several games because of left rib cage soreness. He sustained the injury while diving during the ninth inning of the game Friday, April 29.

Fantasy Tip: The injury does not appear to be serious enough to warrant a trip to the disabled list for Gomez, who is batting just .213 with two RBI and 24 strikeouts in 80 at-bats this year. Colby Rasmus will see the bulk of the action in center field for as long as Gomez is sidelined, with Preston Tucker seeing more action in left field as a result.
