Houston Astros news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Even though Carter roared to over a .400 average in the postseason, apparently a batting average around .200 takes you only so far despite 30-40 homers a year. The Astros also have prospect A.J. Reed ready to go down the line. Carter could be a sleeper selection in lower rounds of mixed drafts if he ends up in a good spot.

The Houston Astros have been described as being "hell-bent to get a closer," according to teams that have had discussions with them this offseason. They have reportedly expressed interest in Cincinnati Reds CL Aroldis Chapman, New York Yankees CL Andrew Miller, Philadelphia Phillies CL Ken Giles and Tampa Bay Rays CL Brad Boxberger, in addition to considering several free-agent options.
Fantasy Tip: This appears to be bad news for incumbent Astros CL Luke Gregerson, who would slide back into an eighth-inning role if Houston acquires a closer. Gregerson went 7-3 with a 3.10 ERA and 31 saves in 64 appearances last season but ranked 24th in strikeout ratio among the 33 MLB relievers who saved at least 15 games in 2015, with 8.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

Fantasy Tip: Keuchel paced the AL in wins (20), innings pitched (232) and WHIP (1.02) with a 2.48 ERA and 216 strikeouts. He was especially dominant at home, too, with an unbeaten 15-0 record, a 1.46 ERA, a 0.89 WHIP and a 9.7 K/9. Keuchel owns a 3.05 FIP over the past two seasons, so his strong run has legs, and the lefty should be viewed as a fantasy ace entering the 2016 season.

Fantasy Tip: Correa exploded onto the scene in June and returned 52 runs, 22 home runs, 68 RBI and 14 stolen bases with a .279/.345/.512 slash line through 432 plate appearances. He is an elite offensive contributor at a shallow position, and he'll be worth considering as early as the first round in drafts this spring.

Fantasy Tip: Rasmus will likely return and fill an everyday outfield role for the 'Stros. He hit just .238 (103-for-432) but had 25 home runs and drove in 61 in 137 games. He's more of a deep mixed outfielder in traditional fantasy leagues and can be a value pick against right-handed pitchers on FantasyScore, as 18 of his homers in 2015 came against righties.

Fantasy Tip: Lowrie played only 69 games for Houston this year due to injury and has been injury-prone in his career. When healthy, though, he has double-digit home run power and can be extremely useful as a middle infielder with pop in deep mixed formats.

Fantasy Tip: Rasmus has one week to accept the team's qualifying offer or become a free agent. If he signs with another club, the Astros would receive a compensatory pick in next year's draft. Rasmus hit .238 with 25 home runs and 61 RBIs in 137 regular-season games and went 7-for-17 with four homers and six RBIs during the playoffs. He strikes out a ton but makes an excellent source of power for fantasy owners who can live with a mediocre batting average.

Houston Astros SP Collin McHugh allowed three earned runs, five hits and a walk over four innings in the Game 5 loss in the American League Division Series against the Kansas City Royals Wednesday, Oct. 14.
Fantasy Tip: McHugh ($6,900, 13.8% of cap) didn't live up to his FantasyScore salary expectations in this one. He'll be a special option again in 2016, as he is young and still has a ton of untapped potential.
Mon, 12 Oct 2015 16:01:32 -0700
Houston Astros SP Lance McCullers allowed two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out seven batters during Game 4 of the American League Division Series against the Kansas City Royals. McCullers did not factor into the decision.
Fantasy Tip: McCullers ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) left in line for the victory, but the bullpen coughed up seven combined runs in the eighth and ninth innings. McCullers stands as a solid value play at FantasyScore, if the Astros advance, and he takes the hill again. He is a mid-round target for seasonal drafts next spring, too.
Mon, 12 Oct 2015 14:39:51 -0700
Houston Astros SS Carlos Correa's 11 total bases during Game 4 of the American League Division Series Monday, Oct. 12, were the most by any shortstop in postseason history, and the second most by any player on a losing team ever in the playoffs.
Fantasy Tip: Correa ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) was just 3-for-17 without an extra-base hit through his first four playoff games, so his two-home run, 4-for-4 showing Monday was a nice boost for FantasyScore players. However, and while it doesn't count in fantasy terms, he made costly mistakes in the field. Still, entering Game 5, Correa is a strong option at shortstop for FantasyScore players.
Mon, 12 Oct 2015 08:23:36 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Gomez ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) went 1-for-4 in his Game 3 return and has not faced Game 4 starter Yordano Ventura. Gomez is a solid option at a price on the bottom of the midrange level of FantasyScore outfielders.
Mon, 12 Oct 2015 00:23:39 -0700
Houston Astros 1B Chris Carter had a solo homer in the seventh inning during Game 3 of the American League Division Series on Sunday, Oct. 11. Carter now has a .455 postseason average after he hit .199 in the regular season.
Fantasy Tip: Carter ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) has had a renewed rush of confidence following a lackluster regular season. Continue playing him in FantasyScore as long as he's hitting in the playoffs.
Mon, 12 Oct 2015 00:14:23 -0700
Houston Astros SP Dallas Keuchel remained perfect at home as the Astros topped the Kansas City Royals 4-2 in Game 3 of the American League Division Series Sunday, Oct. 11. Keuchel allowed five hits and one run with seven strikeouts. He has a 1.45 ERA at Minute Maid Park in 19 starts this year and is now 16-0 at home.
Fantasy Tip: To say Keuchel ($8,300, 16.6% of cap) has been lights out is an understatement. If he starts another game this season, put him in your roster. If this was it, know he will be an elite-level pitcher on most 2016 draft boards.
Sun, 11 Oct 2015 10:01:06 -0700
Houston Astros OF Carlos Gomez (intercostal) will start in center field against Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez in Game 3 of the American League Division Series and is batting sixth in the lineup.
Fantasy Tip: Gomez ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) returns to the lineup after missing the first two games of the series. Gomez is a risky option for owners on FantasyScore and may not be worth it since the injury could affect his play during the game.
Fri, 09 Oct 2015 18:13:30 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Rasmus ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) became the first player in MLB history to have at least one extra-base hit in each of his first six career postseason games. He is 4-for-9 with a double and three home runs during this year's playoffs, making him worthy of consideration for FantasyScore lineups.
