Royals | Kendrys Morales continues hot hitting

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 19:33:19 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Kendrys Morales went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and two RBI against the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday, June 30. He is 16-for-24 (.667) over his last six games with three homers and seven RBI.

Fantasy Tip: Morales finished the month of June with a .402 average, five home runs and 18 RBI in 87 at-bats. He is a must-start option in all fantasy formats right now.

Royals | Kendrys Morales back in right field

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 13:46:56 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Kendrys Morales is starting in right field and batting third against St. Louis Cardinals SP Mike Leake Thursday, June 30. OF Paulo Orlando is not in the starting lineup Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Morales has been scorching hot in June with a .386/.440/.590 slash line, 14 runs, four home runs and 16 RBI. He should be owned in all seasonal leagues and started confidently while rolling offensively. Orlando is a low-end option in deep mixed formats, but a potential starter in cavernous mixed and AL-only setups given his respectable .337/.363/.436 slash line and semi-regular playing time.

Royals | Alex Gordon leading off vs. St. Louis

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 13:41:49 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Alex Gordon is leading off against St. Louis Cardinals SP Mike Leake Thursday, June 30. Royals 2B/OF Whit Merrifield and SS Alcides Escobar are batting second and seventh, respectively.

Fantasy Tip: The KC leadoff spot could be a daily guessing game, but Gordon and Merrifield should maintain starter status in the majority of leagues regardless of where they bat. Escobar, however, is a low-end fantasy option in deep mixed leagues because he isn't the 30-steals commodity he was once was, and hitting atop the lineup is a big boon to his stock. Manager Ned Yost usually settles with a lineup and sticks with it, though, so expect some stability sooner than latter in the one-hole.

Royals | Cheslor Cuthbert sitting vs. Cards

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 13:34:29 -0700

Kansas City Royals 3B Cheslor Cuthbert is not in the starting lineup Thursday, June 30. 2B Christian Colon is starting at third base and batting sixth against St. Louis Cardinals SP Mike Leake Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Cuthbert has provided a solid return in deep mixed and AL-only leagues with 19 runs, seven home runs, 20 RBI and a .271/.307/.429 slash line over 45 games. However, he's still not even a middle-tier option in those deep formats. Colon is a depth piece in cavernous mixed and AL-only setups, and he is a potential flier in daily contests Thursday.

Cardinals | Stephen Piscotty questionable vs. Royals

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 12:08:43 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Stephen Piscotty's (ankle) X-rays on his left ankle were negative and his status for the game against the Kansas City Royals Thursday, June 30, depends on the swelling of his ankle.

Fantasy Tip: With 45 runs, nine home runs, 40 RBI, four stolen bases and a .288/.369/.466 slash line, Piscotty is settling in as an excellent mid-tier outfielder in all fantasy leagues. He has had a rough June (.206/.299/.395 line), but expect him to return to form and post modest five-category production going forward.

Royals | Wade Davis blows save

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 23:12:32 -0700

Kansas City Royals RP Wade Davis allowed a run on two hits and a walk in one inning against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday, June 29. It was his second blown save of the season.

Fantasy Tip: It was a rare misstep for the usually dependable Davis, who is now 18-for-20 in save opportunities this season. Ironically, Joakim Soria then blew a save of his own in the 10th. It wasn't the usual blueprint for KC's bullpen, but they're still one of the top groups in all of baseball.

Royals | Kendrys Morales collects three more hits

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 23:00:58 -0700

Kansas City Royals DH Kendrys Morales went 3-for-4 against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday, June 29.

Fantasy Tip: Make it five multi-hit games in a row for Morales, who is now batting .386 in June with four home runs and 16 RBI. He's worth a roster spot in all leagues.

Royals | Edinson Volquez rebounds nicely

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 21:56:52 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez scattered six hits over 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday, June 29. He walked one and struck out four.

Fantasy Tip: What a difference a start makes. Last time out, Volquez allowed 11 earned runs in one inning -- a performance that launched his ERA from 4.12 to 5.15. This time, the veteran held a tough Cardinals lineup in check in a game that the Royals eventually won in extra innings. It's the second time Volquez held an opponent scoreless in his last four outings; unfortunately, he gave up 17 runs during the two starts in between. Until he shows more consistency he's a fringe option in deep mixed leagues.

Royals | Lorenzo Cain diagnosis and timeline

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 14:21:28 -0700

Updating an ongoing story, Kansas City Royals OF Lorenzo Cain (hamstring) was diagnosed with a Grade 1-plus strain of his left hamstring and should not require more than the required time on the 15-day disabled list, according to manager Ned Yost. Yost noted Cain could return Friday, July 15.

Fantasy Tip: This is good news for Cain's fantasy owners, and the center fielder should be stashed in all seasonal leagues. Brett Eibner could see some fleeting value, but it's likely Jarrod Dyson who will benefit the most while Cain is inactive. For now, Dyson is a viable option in the majority of seasonal leagues because of his speed. Stay tuned for updates on Cain's recovery and return timeline.

Royals | Kendrys Morales starting in right field

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 13:49:10 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Kendrys Morales is starting in right field and batting third against St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez Wednesday, June 29. OF Paulo Orlando is not in the starting lineup Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Morales makes the rare start in the field because there isn't a designated hitter available in the road game against the Cards. He's having a huge June (.367/.425/.582 slash line with four home runs and 16 RBI) and should be owned in all fantasy formats. Orlando owns a .343/.369/.444 line through 188 plate appearances this season and is a viable option in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues.

Royals | No Whit Merrifield vs. Cards

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 13:42:36 -0700

Kansas City Royals 2B/OF Whit Merrifield is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, June 29. 2B Christian Colon is starting at second base and batting seventh against St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Merrifield has settled into the leadoff spot of late, and he has 22 runs through 35 games with a solid .307/.329/.427 slash line. View the rookie as a viable starting option at the keystone or in the outfield in deep mixed leagues. Colon is a viable low-priced flier in daily contests because of his respectable career .354 on-base percentage, but there is limited upside given his .359 career slugging percentage.

Royals | Lorenzo Cain to DL

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 11:12:59 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Lorenzo Cain (hamstring) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring. OF Brett Eibner was recalled from Class AAA Omaha.

Fantasy Tip: Eibner has a .288-11-32 line in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. The right-handed hitter could platoon with left-handed hitting Jarrod Dyson. Both are AL-only options with Dyson having the slight upper hand due to his 12 steals. There is no word on how long Cain will be out, but he'll be out until after the All-Star break. Keep him stashed in all formats.

Royals | Lorenzo Cain injures hamstring

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 05:15:16 -0700

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Royals OF Lorenzo Cain (hamstring) left the game Tuesday, June 28, with a strained left hamstring. He'll have an MRI, but the team doesn't know how severe the strain might be until then.

Fantasy Tip: Jarrod Dyson is likely to see extended time with Cain probably out at least a few days. He's hitting just .252, but he has 12 steals on the year and can contribute with his wheels. He should be picked up in most formats just in case Cain lands on the DL.

Royals | Yordano Ventura gets tuned up

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 22:22:55 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Yordano Ventura allowed seven earned runs, seven hits and three walks over 5 1/3 innings in a loss Tuesday, June 28, against the St. Louis Cardinals to slip to 6-5 while his ERA ballooned to 5.00. He threw just 58 of his 98 pitches for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: Ventura has allowed six or more earned runs in three of his past six starts, while he has quality starts in the other three outings. It's hit or miss with Ventura, and it's hard for fantasy owners to plan whether they'll get good Yordano or bad Yordano.

Royals | Lorenzo Cain leaves game

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 19:39:44 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Lorenzo Cain (leg) was tended to by the training staff Tuesday, June 28, against the St. Louis Cardinals before leaving the game due to an apparent leg injury.

Fantasy Tip: Cain is considered day to day. He was replaced by Jarrod Dyson, and he should be reserved in all daily fantasy leagues and avoided in DFS play until he can officially return and prove his health in a full game without any setbacks.
