Brewers | Jean Segura signs contract with MIL

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 17:26:31 -0800

Milwaukee Brewers SS Jean Segura signed a contract for 2015 with the Brewers Tuesday, March 3. The Brewers set Tuesday as their deadline for players ineligible for arbitration to sign or have their contract renewed at a salary of the team's choosing.

Fantasy Tip: Segura followed a fantastic rookie season in 2013 with a far less impressive encore last year. He's a late-round rebound candidate who could prove starter worthy at shortstop. At worst, Segura's ability to steal bases (20 in 2014 and 44 in 2013) makes him an attractive middle infielder.

Brewers | Scooter Gennett signs contract with MIL

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 17:06:47 -0800

Milwaukee Brewers 2B Scooter Gennett signed a contract for 2015 with the Brewers Tuesday, March 3. The Brewers set Tuesday as their deadline for players ineligible for arbitration to sign or have their contract renewed at a salary of the team's choosing.

Fantasy Tip: An increase in plate appearances this year for Gennett is a near certainty with 2B Rickie Weeks signing to play for the Seattle Mariners this offseason. Gennett's batting average will probably dip with increased exposure to left-handed pitchers -- he struggles against them -- but an increase in the rest of his production will more than offset the drop. He's a fringe starter at second base in standard mixed leagues and a solid option in FantasyScore contests when facing most right-handed pitchers.

Brewers | Francisco Rodriguez will be late to camp

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 16:48:47 -0800

Milwaukee Brewers RP Francisco Rodriguez has begun the process of applying for a work visa, and it's unclear when he'll report to camp. Rodriguez's contract isn't finalized with the Brewers, but they've already cleared a 40-man roster spot in anticipation of adding him to their roster.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez was late to camp last year, and he proceeded to pitch brilliantly in the month of April (13 SVs and 0 ER in 16 IP). He ranks in the upper half of closers this year thanks to his job security and his high strikeout potential (9.66 K/9 in 2014).

Brewers | Jimmy Nelson needs to develop changeup

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 14:15:37 -0800

Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson dealt with control issues in the minors, and scouts have wondered if he's best suited for a bullpen role. As a result, his main objective this year if to develop his changeup and to keep his pitches down in the strike zone. Nelson went 2-9 with a 4.93 ERA in 14 outings with the Brewers in 2014.

Fantasy Tip: Nelson has plenty of upside, but until we see him make adjustments at the next level, he's probably not worth a roster spot in standard 12-team leagues. The bright side is that he'll enter the year with a rotation spot, so he should definitely be drafted in all NL-only leagues.

Brewers | Jimmy Nelson dealing with hammy issue

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 12:35:44 -0800

Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson (hamstring) was pushed back another day Friday, Feb. 27, because of a hamstring issue, however, manager Ron Roenicke maintains it isn't a serious injury.

Fantasy Tip: While the Brewers are likely just being cautious, it would be wise to monitor the situation over the next few weeks. Nelson has nothing left to prove at the minor league level, and he should land a rotation spot to start the season. He looked overwhelmed in his first tour through the majors last season, so he should be viewed as a late-round flier in mixed leagues, albeit one with upside.

Brewers | Aramis Ramirez to see more time off?

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 09:37:11 -0800

Milwaukee Brewers 3B Aramis Ramirez, who will likely play his final season in 2015, could be given more time off this year, according to manager Ron Roenicke. Ramirez said he's hoping to play between 140 and 145 games this season. Ramirez is a career .285 hitter with 369 home runs, 1,342 RBI and an OPS of .840.

Fantasy Tip: Ramirez, 36, has had plenty of big seasons in the past. The problem is he's failed to reach the 20-homer mark each of the last two seasons while dealing with leg issues. Don't expect him to return to 20 dingers in 2015, but you can buy low on him in the later rounds and have some room for a profit.

Brewers | Aramis Ramirez having his swan song

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 07:56:08 -0800

Milwaukee Brewers 3B Aramis Ramirez announced 2015 will likely be his final season.

Fantasy Tip: A-Ram has been dogged by injuries the last two seasons as he has averaged 13.5 homers and 57.5 RBIs. At this stage, he's a low-end third baseman or corner infielder with minimal upside in his age-37 season.

Brewers | Francisco Rodriguez financials

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 04:40:18 -0800

Milwaukee Brewers RP Francisco Rodriguez will be paid $3.5 million in 2015 and $5.5 million in 2016. An additional $4 million in salary will be deferred. The Brewers also hold a $6 million club option for 2017.

Fantasy Tip: As previously mentioned, Rodriguez looks to take the closer job in Milwaukee but whether he holds it is a different story. For now, consider Rodriguez a closer option in mixed and NL drafts, although you should grab another closer before Rodriguez or have Jonathan Broxton as a "handcuff" option.

Brewers | Francisco Rodriguez used two-seamer more

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 12:58:48 -0800

Milwaukee Brewers RP Francisco Rodriguez's average fastball velocity dipped to 90.6 mph in 2014, but he threw his two-seam sinking fastball more often than his four-seamer for the first time in his career, according to Brooksbaseball.net. Opponents also batted just .157 against his changeup, and his walk rate was a career low in 2014. The one knock against him came in his home runs allowed (14), which was the most by any reliever in the league.

Fantasy Tip: Consider K-Rod a low-end No. 2 closer in standard 12-team mixed leagues now that he's back with the Brew Crew. His increasing two-seam usage should help him continue to keep his ground-ball rate gains from last season in place and limit the home run allowance.

Brewers | Jonathan Broxton to setup role

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 11:06:48 -0800

Milwaukee Brewers RP Jonathan Broxton will be pushed to a setup role after the team re-signed RP Francisco Rodriguez to be their closer Thursday, Feb. 26.

Fantasy Tip: Broxton's only real fantasy baseball value came with him inheriting the ninth-inning role, so now that that's gone, he shouldn't be drafted in standard 12-team mixed leagues. He might be worth a low investment in NL-only leagues as a handcuff to K-Rod.

Brewers | Francisco Rodriguez contract update

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 08:19:38 -0800

Updating a previous report, Milwaukee Brewers RP Francisco Rodriguez signed a two-year deal with the Brewers worth $13 million.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez likely will start the season as the closer, but it is not known if he will be able to keep the job. Owners probably can consider Rodriguez as a low-end No. 2 relief pitcher in fantasy drafts this season.

Brewers | Francisco Rodriguez agrees with Milwaukee

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 07:22:35 -0800

Free-agent RP Francisco Rodriguez (Brewers) agreed to a two-year deal with the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday, Feb. 26. The deal includes an option for a third year.

Fantasy Tip: K-Rod delivered a mixed bag in 2014. His 44 saves were the most he has accrued since his record-breaking season of 62 in 2008. His strikeouts have dropped a tick, but he still had a solid 9.66 K-rate. He had a great 0.99 WHIP, but his career-high 14 home runs allowed contributed to his so-so 3.04 ERA. He'll likely have the first shot at closing games, and he's a low-end RP2.

Brewers | Ryan Braun's thumb feels great

Wed, 25 Feb 2015 15:25:08 -0800

Milwaukee Brewers OF Ryan Braun (thumb) is feeling great and expects to be successful if he remains healthy in 2015. "I'm excited about it; so far it feels great," said Braun. "Everything so far has gone as well as I could have possibly hoped. Hopefully, the next few weeks it continues to do the same and we can stop talking about it at some point in the near future." Braun reported to Brewers' camp Wednesday, Feb. 25. He doesn't expect to be limited during spring training but said he'll "have to be conscious" of how many extra swings he takes in spring training so he doesn't overtax the thumb prior to the regular season.

Fantasy Tip: Braun was once one of the elite fantasy hitters as recently as a few years ago, but injuries to his right thumb have partially contributed to his slide in the rankings. His upside is immense if his thumb remains healthy, however, a possible re-injury and his decline in performance are reasons to bump him down a round or two from his first-round pick heyday.

Brewers | Jean Segura tweaks stance

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 13:52:20 -0800

Milwaukee Brewers SS Jean Segura, who had a disappointing season in 2014, played a few weeks in winter ball to implement some changes to his batting stance. "I've been working on it because I had some troubles getting out front with my left leg," said Segura, who is holding his hands back more and putting more weight on his back leg. "It works. I used it in winter ball and it worked for me. I'm going to continue to do it. It helps me stay back more."

Fantasy Tip: Segura isn't as good as his 2013 suggested (.294 with 12 homers and 44 stolen bases), but he's not as bad as what he showed last year (.246 with 20 stolen bases). Expect something more in the middle in 2015, which means he's a sexy pick for his discounted price in the middle rounds.

Brewers | Brewers talking to K-Rod again

Sun, 22 Feb 2015 20:49:49 -0800

Free-agent RP Francisco Rodriguez's (Brewers) representation, super agent Scott Boras, and Milwaukee Brewers owner Mark Attanasio have been talking about a deal for the reliever.

Fantasy Tip: K-Rod could re-emerge as a solid fantasy option if he is able to come in and nail down the closer's job in Cream City. He'll likely have to hold off Jonathan Broxton for the role.
