Mets | David Wright making progress

Thu, 21 May 2015 15:50:40 -0700

New York Mets 3B David Wright (back, hamstring) has slowly increased his workload in his rehab this week, but there is no timetable for him to play in a rehab game.

Fantasy Tip: Wright ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) is a notoriously slow healer, and his rehab from hamstring and back injuries is no different here. You'll have to stay patient in traditional leagues and hope his power stroke isn't affected when he returns. Eric Campbell ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) will continue to man the hot corner in the meantime. He's a low-end third base option at FantasyScore, though.

Mets | Lucas Duda mastering lefties

Thu, 21 May 2015 15:40:51 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Mets 1B Lucas Duda has drastically improved against left-handed pitching in 2015 after struggling last year, and part of the credit is going to former Mets star Keith Hernandez after he worked with Duda before spring training on his approach against southpaws. Hernandez said Duda didn't change anything mechanically, though, and he has like the way he's attacking lefties early in counts. Both of Duda's home runs against lefties Thursday, May 21, were on first pitches.

Fantasy Tip: The Duda abides. He has surely put a big smile on his owners' faces with his drastic improvement against left-handers this year. Whether his dominance against them will last is another story, but he's proving to be a strong play at FantasyScore. Yes, even against lefties.

Mets | Lucas Duda goes deep twice

Thu, 21 May 2015 15:22:35 -0700

New York Mets 1B Lucas Duda hit two home runs in a winning effort Thursday, May 21. He's now hitting .409 with four of his five home runs and six extra-base hits against left-handed pitchers this year. Last year, he hit only .180 against southpaws with two home runs and four extra-base hits in 111 at-bats. Duda was 2-for-3 in the contest with three runs scored, four RBI and a walk to raise his season average to .302.

Fantasy Tip: Now that Duda ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) has apparently solved left-handers, his fantasy value is at its peak. He should be considered a strong FantasyScore play on a daily basis and an against-the-grain play against lefties.

Mets | Jacob deGrom overpowers Red Birds

Thu, 21 May 2015 15:20:22 -0700

New York Mets SP Jacob deGrom had 11 strikeouts in eight dominant innings to beat the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday, May 21, and he retired the final 23 hitters after a first-inning single. deGrom also battled through a tender hip and stiff shoulder that had bothered him recently. It was his fifth double-digit strikeout game and first since Sept. 21 of last year. He is now 10-1 with a 1.19 ERA in his last 12 starts at home, with a 1.50 ERA in 16 career games at Citi Field. deGrom went eight innings and allowed just the one hit while walking none Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: deGrom ($7,300, 14.6% of cap) is a fine FantasyScore option every fifth day, but he's been much better at home this year than on the road (6.75 ERA, .302 batting average against). For now, you should be hesitant to use him on the road.

Cardinals | Matt Holliday sitting vs. Mets

Thu, 21 May 2015 08:07:08 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday is not in the starting lineup against the New York Mets Thursday, May 21. 1B Mark Reynolds is batting seventh and playing left field Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to avoid Holliday ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) in all fantasy formats Thursday, it is likely nothing more than a routine day off on getaway day. Reynolds ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) has hit a hot streak over the past 15 games, as he sports a .327/.364/.500 slash line with seven runs, two home runs and eight RBI. FantasyScore players should view him as an upside source of cap relief, albeit a somewhat risky one against stingy starting pitcher Jacob deGrom.

Mets | Wilmer Flores moved to two-hole

Thu, 21 May 2015 07:41:55 -0700

New York Mets SS Wilmer Flores is batting second against the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday, May 21.

Fantasy Tip: Flores ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) has five runs, three home runs and seven RBI with a .524 slugging percentage over his last 11 games, and he boasts significant power potential for a middle infielder. FantasyScore players should view him as a moderate-risk, high-reward shortstop option hitting in a prime lineup spot Thursday.

Mets | Juan Lagares jumps to leadoff spot

Thu, 21 May 2015 07:38:42 -0700

New York Mets OF Juan Lagares is batting leadoff against the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday, May 21.

Fantasy Tip: Setting the table is a boon for Lagares' ($2,500, 5.0% of cap) fantasy stock Thursday, and FantasyScore players have an upside low-priced flier on their hands. He is currently sporting a five-game hitting streak with two runs and a stolen base.

Mets | Curtis Granderson sitting vs. lefty

Thu, 21 May 2015 07:31:34 -0700

New York Mets OF Curtis Granderson is not in the starting lineup against the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday, May 21. OF John Mayberry Jr. is starting in right field and batting sixth Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: With a southpaw starting on getaway day, it is a fine time to provide Granderson ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) a rest day. Make sure to avoid him in all formats Thursday. Mayberry ($1,900, 3.8% of cap) has been relegated to pinch-hit duties and is sporting a .135/.200/.270 slash line over 40 plate appearances. Aim higher in all fantasy formats.

Mets | Dillon Gee to make rehab start

Wed, 20 May 2015 20:17:45 -0700

New York Mets SP Dillon Gee (groin) is scheduled to make a rehab start for high-A St. Lucie (Fla.) Thursday, May 21.

Fantasy Tip: Gee ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) appears to be close to returning to the Mets, but it is not known how many more rehab starts he will need. Owners on FantasyScore may want to see Gee to pitch in a game or two before considering him an option.

Mets | Bartolo Colon struggles in start

Wed, 20 May 2015 19:44:27 -0700

New York Mets SP Bartolo Colon allowed nine runs on 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings against the St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday, May 20.

Fantasy Tip: Colon ($6,900, 13.8% of cap) has struggled in his last three starts by allowing 17 earned runs in that span. Colon is scheduled to face the Philadelphia Phillies in his next start and could be a solid starting option on FantasyScore.

Mets | Bartolo Colon likes facing Cards

Wed, 20 May 2015 14:07:35 -0700

New York Mets SP Bartolo Colon, who is going for his seventh win of the season against the St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday, May 20, has a 1.17 ERA and has won all three of his starts against the Cardinals since 2013. He is 4-0 in six career outings against St. Louis. Colon hasn't walked a batter in 45 1/3 innings, the longest active stretch in baseball without a walk. He allowed six runs in five innings in his last start, the worst of the young season for him.

Fantasy Tip: Colon ($6,900, 13.8% of cap) doesn't have the velocity to blow people away anymore in his advanced age, and his 7.4 K/9 rate is likely to come down. If he isn't hitting spots, he'll be hit hard like he did in his last start. The Cardinals aren't the best matchup for you to use Colon in at FantasyScore.

Mets | Jon Niese not a bullpen option

Tue, 19 May 2015 19:06:33 -0700

New York Mets SP Jon Niese will not be a candidate to move to the bullpen when SP Dillon Gee (groin) is activated from the 15-day disabled list, according to manager Terry Collins.

Fantasy Tip: Niese ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) allowed eight runs in his start Tuesday, May 19, but appears to be safe in terms of his spot in the rotation. He is scheduled to face the Pittsburgh Pirates in his next start and may be a risky option on FantasyScore.

Mets | Bobby Parnell not worrying GM

Tue, 19 May 2015 15:59:38 -0700

New York Mets RP Bobby Parnell's decreased velocity in the minor leagues has not been worrying general manager Sandy Alderson. Parnell allowed three runs (two earned) off four hits over one and a third innings Tuesday, May 19, in an extended spring training game. Parnell regularly threw 90-92 mph and occasionally went higher, according to Alderson. Manager Terry Collins said Parnell is also having some control issues.

Fantasy Tip: Parnell has seemed like a lock to step right back into the closer role upon his return, but the play of fill-in closer Jeurys Familia has likely changed that plan. Familia blew his first save of the season Monday, May 18, but he should retain a firm grip on the job for the foreseeable future.

Mets | Noah Syndergaard won't go to 'pen

Tue, 19 May 2015 15:51:16 -0700

New York Mets SP Noah Syndergaard will not be moved to the bullpen once SP Dillon Gee (groin) returns from the disabled list, according to general manager Sandy Alderson Tuesday, May 19. Gee is scheduled to make his final rehab start Thursday, May 21, with Syndergaard scheduled for his third major league start Friday. The Mets will then decide whether to assign Gee to a bullpen role or to send Syndergaard back to Class AAA Las Vegas.

Fantasy Tip: Syndergaard ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) picked up his first career win Sunday, May 17, against the Milwaukee Brewers, by allowing just three hits and one run across six innings. Syndergaard has been operating with a high strikeout rate, but he has also struggled with issuing walks. Even if Syndergaard is demoted, he'll be worth stashing in deeper leagues or NL-only leagues, as he will likely see more time in the majors this season.

Mets | NYM not looking for bats

Tue, 19 May 2015 15:24:27 -0700

New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said Tuesday, May 19, he's not actively pursuing trades for hitters at this point. Alderson suggested the team will wait until 3B David Wright (back) and C Travis d'Arnaud (finger) return from their injuries before making any roster decisions. The Mets entered Tuesday ranked 22nd in home runs (30), 25th in batting average (.238) and 24th in on-base percentage (.302).

Fantasy Tip: In terms of OPS, 1B Lucas Duda ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) has been the most effective member of the Mets' regular lineup. Duda is 4-for-15 during a current three-game hitting streak, with three extra-base hits. Duda will continue to be a GPP option on FantasyScore, but he'll soon need some more help around him.
