Mets | Jon Niese throws two innings

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 13:21:23 -0800

New York Mets SP Jon Niese (shoulder) threw two innings in the team's intrasquad game Tuesday, March 3, and reported no shoulder discomfort following his work.

Fantasy Tip: Niese said he had life on his fastball, which hopefully means a better record than his 9-11 mark and 3.40 earned run average last year. Niese only had 45 walks to go with 138 strikeouts, so if Niese can keep the ratio down and improve the won-loss record he may merit a middle-round selection in most leagues.

Mets | David Wright takes the field

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 13:13:44 -0800

New York Mets 3B David Wright (shoulder) took the field for an intrasquad game Tuesday, March 3, which marked the first time since his shoulder injury last season that he saw action.

Fantasy Tip: Wright told reporters his shoulder was fine afterward and it had been through all of spring training. Wright hit .269-8-63 last season and scored just 54 runs, so his fantasy value has taken a huge hit from his days of 25-30 homers a year. Wright could be a sleeper if his shoulder has healed, but for now he's no better than a mid-round selection.

Mets | Matt Harvey to throw curve more?

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 14:48:00 -0800

New York Mets SP Matt Harvey (elbow) focused in particular on his curve ball during a batting practice session against live hitters Monday, March 2. Harvey, who used a curve ball primarily in college, said he has started throwing it more because it's been easier to throw after his elbow surgery. "I always threw sliders," said Harvey, who threw approximately four of them for every three curves in 2013. "It's nice having that develop." Harvey will face opposing hitters for the first time Friday, March 6, against the Detroit Tigers.

Fantasy Tip: Harvey comes at an injury discount in 2015 after coming off Tommy John surgery. His spring outings will be under close scrutiny by fantasy baseball players. Temper your expectations for Harvey out of the gate, as starters often face a period of lower velocity and suspect control after TJS, but news on a sharper curve for Harvey makes him even more intriguing in the middle rounds.

Mets | Matt Harvey unlikely to hit 200 innings

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 12:46:04 -0800

New York Mets SP Matt Harvey (elbow) probably will not pitch 200 innings this season but could pitch around 180 to 190 innings, according to pitching coach Dan Warthen.

Fantasy Tip: The Mets could take Harvey out of game earlier than they usually would during the early part of the season since he is coming back from his elbow injury. Harvey likely will be an option in the middle rounds of mixed league drafts if he does not suffer any setbacks during spring training.

Mets | Matt Harvey throws batting practice

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 12:38:09 -0800

New York Mets SP Matt Harvey (elbow) threw 26 pitches during a live batting practice session Monday, March 2. Harvey is scheduled to play in the spring training game Friday, March 6, and is targeted for 35 pitches but will not throw more than 40 pitches during the appearance.

Fantasy Tip: Harvey appears to making good progress, but owners will know more about his status once he starts pitching in games. Harvey may be able to pitch in April if he does not have any setbacks and could be a solid draft choice in the middle rounds of mixed league drafts.

Mets | Matt Harvey to throw 35 pitches Friday

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 10:36:48 -0800

New York Mets SP Matt Harvey (elbow) will target 35 pitches for his outing Friday, March 6, over two innings. He'll throw 40 pitches at the most.

Fantasy Tip: A lot of eyes will be on Harvey as he makes his first spring outing against the Detroit Tigers Friday. So far, all reports on his right elbow have been glowing out of camp. If he doesn't suffer any setbacks, Harvey could be ready to pitch early in April. It's hard not to want to take a chance on him with an injury discount in the middle rounds of fantasy drafts.

Mets | Lucas Duda might start swinging soon

Sun, 01 Mar 2015 18:11:32 -0800

New York Mets 1B Lucas Duda (side) has refrained from swinging during the early portion of spring due to a strained intercostal muscle on his left side. However, manager Terry Collins said Sunday, March 1, that Duda is expected to begin hitting off a tee this week. He should advance to taking batting practice next week, Collins said.

Fantasy Tip: Duda swatted 30 homers with 92 RBIs in 153 games last season and he can be a cheap source of power in FantasyScore, especially when the pitching matchup is favorable. All indications are that his injury should not hinder him into the regular season.

Mets | Bartolo Colon could start opener

Sat, 28 Feb 2015 10:33:28 -0800

New York Mets SP Bartolo Colon is in the running to start Opening Day against the Washington Nationals April 6. According to multiple sources, Colon and one unnamed starter are being considered by team officials to make the start.

Fantasy Tip: The 41-year-old Colon has made six career Opening Day starts and topped 200 innings last season for the first time since 2005. His record (15-13) and ERA (4.09) were mediocre, but he struck out approximately five batters for every walk he allowed. Given his age, he could be available in the later rounds of mixed fantasy league drafts.

Mets | Matt Harvey feels great in BP session

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 10:14:11 -0800

New York Mets SP Matt Harvey (elbow) threw a total of 40 pitches to teammates Friday, Feb. 27, and he said he felt great during the session. "It was awesome," Harvey said. "Obviously throwing a bullpen on the '10-pack' with nine other guys is a different feeling than facing basically our 'Core Four,' or whatever you call it. You step in the box and you have David in there, it's a good feeling to have that and be back. I couldn't feel better. It was a good day." Manager Terry Collins estimated Harvey's final pitch of the session registered 94-95 mph.

Fantasy Tip: It's hard to take much away from Harvey's 40-pitch BP session in late February, but the most important part is that his right elbow is completely healthy. At his reduced price in 2015 in the middle rounds, Harvey could be well worth the price. Just keep in mind that he could get off to a slow start as he works to maintain his velocity and control while returning from TJS.

Mets | Bobby Parnell faces hitters

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 11:28:22 -0800

New York Mets RP Bobby Parnell (elbow) faced hitters for the first time since having Tommy John surgery last April Thursday, Feb. 26, and he viewed the workout as a positive, even though the hitters were just tracking pitches. "He's going to be a piece we're going to have to have. Like I said to him, 'You've got to still take it slow.' Hopefully by the end of spring training he gets into a couple of games," manager Terry Collins said.

Fantasy Tip: Even though Parnell will start the year on the disabled list, he's still worth a fantasy baseball selection for saves, since he's expected to jump right back into the closer role when he's ready. Jenrry Mejia is worth a late-round flier for saves to start the year.

Mets | Matt Harvey's first start scheduled

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 11:17:21 -0800

New York Mets SP Matt Harvey (elbow) will see his first spring start March 6 after returning from Tommy John surgery, and he'll face the Detroit Tigers in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Harvey will face batters for the first time this spring Friday, Feb. 27, although the hitters won't be swinging at pitches.

Fantasy Tip: Harvey's reduced price in this year's drafts may very well be worth it. However, you may want to temper your expectations, since starters often face a period of adjustment when they return from TJS surgery, meaning he could be in for a slow start. A middle-rounds price is hard to pass up for this recovering superstar.

Mets | Lucas Duda out another week

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 10:05:23 -0800

New York Mets OF Lucas Duda (oblique) will not swing for another week, according to manager Terry Collins.

Fantasy Tip: Oblique strains can typically be tricky, so it's no surprise the Mets are being cautious with Duda. Obliques aren't good news for power hitters like Duda, either, so if this is a condition that lingers, it could impact his homer stroke, at least earlier in the season. Keep an eye out on his progress.

Mets | Daniel Murphy open to extension

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 09:08:54 -0800

New York Mets 2B Daniel Murphy said he is open to extension talks with the club during the season, but no in-season extension talks are planned, according to a team source. That means Murphy will likely head to free agency next offseason. The source noted that the Mets are deep in upper-level middle infield prospects like INFs Dilson Herrera, Matthew Reynolds and even Wilmer Flores. Murphy is set to earn $8 million this season.

Fantasy Tip: Murphy isn't a bad second base option in the late middle rounds of standard leagues, and a high batting average is his main skill, but he can also offer a little power and little speed. Just don't expect a return to the 20-stolen base mark that he put up in 2013.

Mets | Matt Harvey to debut March 6

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 07:48:36 -0800

New York Mets SP Matt Harvey (elbow) will make his spring training debut against the Detroit Tigers March 6.

Fantasy Tip: Harvey is a risky SP2 with a large reward potential.

Mets | Matt Harvey to throw BP Friday

Wed, 25 Feb 2015 08:50:49 -0800

New York Mets SP Matt Harvey (elbow) will throw his first batting practice session this spring Friday, Feb. 27.

Fantasy Tip: Harvey is a solid SP2 candidate, but it's important to remember that most pitchers struggle with control upon returning from Tommy John surgery. He has a lot of risk with a lot of reward mixed in.
