Mets | Steven Matz cruises through fourth win

Wed, 04 May 2016 13:51:05 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz threw 7 2/3 scoreless innings with just two hits allowed and seven strikeouts during the Mets' 8-0 win over the Atlanta Braves. It was Matz's fourth win of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Don't overlook Matz dominating a weak-hitting team. Beating teams you should is critical to the final stat line at the end of the season. The southpaw has a 2.83 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP with 30 punchouts through 28 2/3 innings for the campaign. A looming innings limit could be the only thing holding Matz back from a stellar fantasy showing in 2016.

Mets | Asdrubal Cabrera hits second home run

Wed, 04 May 2016 13:44:56 -0700

New York Mets SS Asdrubal Cabrera went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run during the Mets' 8-0 win over the Atlanta Braves Wednesday, May 4.

Fantasy Tip: Cabrera is off to a nice start with 10 runs, two home runs, nine RBI and a .304/.366/.435 slash line. He is a viable option at the 6 in the majority of seasonal leagues and a solid middle infielder in deep mixed formats. Remember, Cabrera turned it on in the second half last season with a .328/.372/.544 slash line after the All-Star break.

Mets | Lucac Duda hits a pair of home runs

Wed, 04 May 2016 13:38:23 -0700

New York Mets 1B Lucas Duda went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI during the Mets' 8-0 win over the Atlanta Braves Wednesday, May 4.

Fantasy Tip: Duda is up to seven home runs and 18 RBI with a .258/.299/.528 slash line for the season, and he remains a viable starting option at first base in the majority of seasonal leagues. He is a streaky hitter, but Duda will flirt with 30 home runs and 85 RBI at the end of the season. He holds less value in head-to-head formats because of his inconsistency at the dish, though.

Mets | Matt Harvey's agent worried?

Wed, 04 May 2016 11:54:37 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Mets SP Matt Harvey's agent, Scott Boras, agrees with manager Terry Collins that Harvey's heavy workload in 2015 could have something to do with his slow start. However, Boras is also confident that Harvey is physically healthy and that he'll bounce back after making adjustments. Harvey has a 4.76 ERA in six starts, and his strikeouts are down to 6.6 per nine innings.

Fantasy Tip: It could just be a slow start for the Dark Knight, but with his strikeouts and velocity down and walks up, you have to be concerned as an owner after he tossed a career-high 216 innings coming off Tommy John surgery in 2015. Keep an eye on this ace. Buying low is an option if his owner is worried, but tread carefully here.

Mets | Matt Harvey searching for answers

Wed, 04 May 2016 09:37:34 -0700

New York Mets SP Matt Harvey is searching for answers after a weak start to his season after he allowed three runs on eight hits while walking two in 5 2/3 innings against the Atlanta Braves Tuesday, May 3. He is now 2-4 with a 4.76 ERA. Manager Terry Collins thinks there could be a carryover effect after Harvey threw a career-high 216 innings in 2015, which was the most every by a pitcher returning from Tommy John surgery. "Right now, I'm not feeling good with my mechanics. I'm not feeling good throwing the ball," Harvey said. "It's frustrating. I think I've said it before: I'm the one who is most frustrated here about what's going on. It's been a frustrating start, but we have a long way to go." His fastball velocity has been underwhelming and averaged 93 mph Tuesday. Harvey has a 6.00 ERA in the fifth and a 20.25 ERA in the sixth inning this year. Collins said Harvey had been sick the day before his start and needed pregame fluids Tuesday.

Fantasy Tip: Harvey has been one of the more disappointing fantasy aces so far into the 2016 season. Keep an eye on his diminished velocity, as it could be the precursor to an injury. Harvey dealt with illness during a start earlier this year and was slow to start in spring training, too, so this could just be a slow start for him. But it's a development to watch right now.

Mets | David Wright sits out

Wed, 04 May 2016 07:19:43 -0700

New York Mets 3B David Wright is out of the lineup Wednesday, May 4, with INF Wilmer Flores hitting seventh. C Kevin Plawecki is also out with C Rene Rivera hitting eighth. SS Asdrubal Cabrera moved up to hit second.

Fantasy Tip: Neither Flores nor Rivera are worth streaming against Jhoulys Chacin in DFS. Cabrera has a .307-1-7 line on the season and is a mediocre option in DFS.

Mets | Steven Matz rolls into Wednesday

Tue, 03 May 2016 23:39:25 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz will face the Atlanta Braves Wednesday, May 4. He heads into the start having won three starts in a row while compiling a 0.93 ERA with 21 strikeouts over 19 1/3 innings during the span.

Fantasy Tip: Matz is a must-start in NL-only fantasy leagues, some mixed formats and certainly in DFS play while he is running hot.

Mets | Matt Harvey tripped up again

Tue, 03 May 2016 23:38:33 -0700

New York Mets SP Matt Harvey allowed three earned runs, eight hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings with four strikeouts in a loss Tuesday, May 3, against the Atlanta Braves.

Fantasy Tip: Harvey's ERA slipped to 4.76 and he has a subpar 1.56 WHIP through six starts over 34 innings. He'll get it going eventually, as his ERA is nearly two runs over his career averages.

Mets | Travis d'Arnaud not doing much

Tue, 03 May 2016 16:17:05 -0700

New York Mets C Travis d'Arnaud (shoulder) hasn't done any physical activity a week after going on the 15-day disabled list, and the Mets have no timetable on when he will begin throwing. It's highly unlikely that d'Arnaud comes off the DL when he's eligible May 11. C Kevin Plawecki is doing the majority of catching with d'Arnaud sidelined.

Fantasy Tip: D'Arnaud has developed a reputation for being injury prone and a slow healer early in his career. That's not good for a catcher. Because of his slow start (.196/.288/.261) to boot, those in shallow leagues without space to stash him will need to look for other options. Plawecki isn't a bad second-catching option in two-backstop leagues for the time being.

Mets | Bartolo Colon nearly untouchable

Mon, 02 May 2016 22:36:31 -0700

New York Mets SP Bartolo Colon scattered seven hits with no walks over eight scoreless innings while posting seven strikeouts Monday, May 2, against the Atlanta Braves.

Fantasy Tip: Colon lowered his ERA to 2.56 while sporting an impressive 1.14 WHIP with 28 strikeouts over 31 2/3 innings. He continues to pitch at a very high level despite being 42 years of age, and he remains a must-start in most fantasy formats and DFS play.

Mets | Yoenis Cespedes homers again

Mon, 02 May 2016 22:35:34 -0700

New York Mets OF Yoenis Cespedes went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Monday, May 2, against the Atlanta Braves. He has 25 homers in 77 games since joining the Mets last summer. He is the quickest in franchise history to reach the mark, as former 1B Carlos Delgado held the old record with 25 homers in his first 88 games with the team.

Fantasy Tip: Something about playing at Citi Field and with the Mets agrees with Cespedes, and it appears after three previous stops that he has found a long-term home.

Mets | Noah Syndergaard slow to the plate

Mon, 02 May 2016 10:59:24 -0700

New York Mets SP Noah Syndergaard has trouble holding runners because of his slow delivery to the plate, and opposing basestealers are 12-for-13 off him this year. The San Francisco Giants stole three bases off Syndergaard in his outing Sunday, May 1. He's on pace to allow 78 steals over 30 starts.

Fantasy Tip: Thor remains one of the best young pitchers in baseball despite his struggles keeping runners close. It shouldn't affect his fantasy value at all, although it could lead to more runs being scored off of him in certain situations. Despite the loss Sunday, Syndergaard is a must-start in all matchups.

Mets | Giants stop Noah Syndergaard's thunder

Sun, 01 May 2016 14:13:27 -0700

New York Mets SP Noah Syndergaard endured his worst outing of the season on Sunday, May 1, against the San Francisco Giants, giving up four runs on five hits and a pair of walks across 5 2/3 innings en route to his first loss of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Syndergaard did strike out six, but he hasn't been quite the dominant pitcher in either of his last two starts that he was over his first three outings, when he went 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA. Thor stands an outstanding chance of putting the hammer down in his next turn, however, as he gets the San Diego Padres in PETCO Park on Friday.

Giants | Buster Posey rips Mets

Sun, 01 May 2016 14:04:59 -0700

San Francisco Giants C Buster Posey went 2-for-4 with a solo shot and scored twice against the New York Mets on Sunday, May 01.

Fantasy Tip: Posey could be doing a little bit better in the RBI department (eight), but he's pretty well locked in at the plate right now and proving again why he is one of the best fantasy catchers in the business. He's a very good bet to keep it going against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park on Monday.

Mets | Several NYM regulars resting Sunday

Sun, 01 May 2016 07:36:28 -0700

New York Mets OF Curtis Granderson, SS Asdrubal Cabrera and 1B Lucas Duda are not in the starting lineup against San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner Sunday, May 1. OF Juan Lagares will bat leadoff and play right field, INF Wilmer Flores will bat sixth and play shortstop and INF Eric Campbell will bat eighth and play first base. In addition, C Kevin Plawecki has returned to the lineup and will bat seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Granderson and Duda are resting because a left-handed pitcher is on the mound, while the switch-hitting Cabrera is receiving his first off day of the regular season. Of the replacements in Sunday's lineup, only Lagares has experienced any success at the plate this year, batting .281 with two extra-base hits and two RBI through his first 32 at-bats. Lagares should be viewed as an inexpensive flier option in daily fantasy contests.
