Mets | Bobby Parnell faces hitters

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 11:28:22 -0800

New York Mets RP Bobby Parnell (elbow) faced hitters for the first time since having Tommy John surgery last April Thursday, Feb. 26, and he viewed the workout as a positive, even though the hitters were just tracking pitches. "He's going to be a piece we're going to have to have. Like I said to him, 'You've got to still take it slow.' Hopefully by the end of spring training he gets into a couple of games," manager Terry Collins said.

Fantasy Tip: Even though Parnell will start the year on the disabled list, he's still worth a fantasy baseball selection for saves, since he's expected to jump right back into the closer role when he's ready. Jenrry Mejia is worth a late-round flier for saves to start the year.

Mets | Matt Harvey's first start scheduled

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 11:17:21 -0800

New York Mets SP Matt Harvey (elbow) will see his first spring start March 6 after returning from Tommy John surgery, and he'll face the Detroit Tigers in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Harvey will face batters for the first time this spring Friday, Feb. 27, although the hitters won't be swinging at pitches.

Fantasy Tip: Harvey's reduced price in this year's drafts may very well be worth it. However, you may want to temper your expectations, since starters often face a period of adjustment when they return from TJS surgery, meaning he could be in for a slow start. A middle-rounds price is hard to pass up for this recovering superstar.

Mets | Lucas Duda out another week

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 10:05:23 -0800

New York Mets OF Lucas Duda (oblique) will not swing for another week, according to manager Terry Collins.

Fantasy Tip: Oblique strains can typically be tricky, so it's no surprise the Mets are being cautious with Duda. Obliques aren't good news for power hitters like Duda, either, so if this is a condition that lingers, it could impact his homer stroke, at least earlier in the season. Keep an eye out on his progress.

Mets | Daniel Murphy open to extension

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 09:08:54 -0800

New York Mets 2B Daniel Murphy said he is open to extension talks with the club during the season, but no in-season extension talks are planned, according to a team source. That means Murphy will likely head to free agency next offseason. The source noted that the Mets are deep in upper-level middle infield prospects like INFs Dilson Herrera, Matthew Reynolds and even Wilmer Flores. Murphy is set to earn $8 million this season.

Fantasy Tip: Murphy isn't a bad second base option in the late middle rounds of standard leagues, and a high batting average is his main skill, but he can also offer a little power and little speed. Just don't expect a return to the 20-stolen base mark that he put up in 2013.

Mets | Matt Harvey to debut March 6

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 07:48:36 -0800

New York Mets SP Matt Harvey (elbow) will make his spring training debut against the Detroit Tigers March 6.

Fantasy Tip: Harvey is a risky SP2 with a large reward potential.

Mets | Matt Harvey to throw BP Friday

Wed, 25 Feb 2015 08:50:49 -0800

New York Mets SP Matt Harvey (elbow) will throw his first batting practice session this spring Friday, Feb. 27.

Fantasy Tip: Harvey is a solid SP2 candidate, but it's important to remember that most pitchers struggle with control upon returning from Tommy John surgery. He has a lot of risk with a lot of reward mixed in.

Mets | NY looking to motivate Ruben Tejada

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 13:45:32 -0800

New York Mets SS Ruben Tejada is in a shortstop race with SS Wilmer Flores, but it appears manager Terry Collins is using it as a way to motivate Tejada. Collins said that Tejada needed to attend voluntary workouts before camp in order to be on the same footing as Flores. Tejada was working out in Port St. Lucie, Fla., in recent weeks before camp.

Fantasy Tip: Tejada is expected to win the shortstop job in camp, unless his performance drastically proves otherwise. There's really nothing to like about Tejada for fantasy purposes, though, aside from playing time. That makes him strictly an NL-only commodity.

Mets | Curtis Granderson likely to hit leadoff?

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 11:44:09 -0800

New York Mets OF Curtis Granderson has no preference for where he hits in the lineup this year, and manager Terry Collins said Granderson's spot is "up in the air." Either Granderson or OF Juan Lagares will hit leadoff, with Collins favoring Granderson to avoid putting too much of a burden on Lagares. Granderson also downplayed the impact of the changes of the dimensions to Citi Field, although a team study showed that he would have hit nine extra homers with the new dimensions.

Fantasy Tip: Granderson could be a really nice value pick at the tail end of mixed league drafts this year. Hitting leadoff may hurt his RBI opportunities, but it'll also give him a chance to score more runs. The new Citi Field dimensions and prior history with new hitting coach Kevin Long could go a long way in helping him repeat a 20-homer season.

Mets | Lucas Duda has oblique pain

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 09:42:03 -0800

New York Mets 1B Lucas Duda (oblique) will not swing a bat for two to three days because of mild right oblique pain. However, he did fielding drills Tuesday, Feb. 24.

Fantasy Tip: Duda's injury doesn't sound serious, but oblique injuries can be tricky, so the Mets will likely play it ultra-cautious early in camp. Duda won't help you at all in BA, but he does have plenty of thump in his lumber. Platoon concerns will make him a late-round option in mixed leagues.

Mets | David Wright not making guarantees

Mon, 23 Feb 2015 09:02:05 -0800

New York Mets 3B David Wright (shoulder) believes the shoulder issues that plagued him last year are behind him, but he's making no guarantees until he tests it in spring training. He didn't need surgery on his left shoulder and didn't say if his injury caused him to hit .269 with just eight home runs and 63 RBI last season. Manager Terry Collins suggested that giving Wright a dozen games off throughout the year would be helpful. "I think it is probably to the point where I have to be a little more realistic that it's probably not in my best interest or the team's best interest to go out there and play 162 games," Wright said. "I think a good off day here and there probably can be beneficial for both me and the team."

Fantasy Tip: If you pass on the high-upside third basemen in drafts, Wright could be there to provide similar statistics at a discount, providing the shoulder woes are indeed behind him. The fact that Citi Field has moved in the fences in 2015 is another positive toward him upping his homer production from last year.

Mets | Matt Harvey to begin season on time

Sat, 21 Feb 2015 14:25:26 -0800

New York Mets SP Matt Harvey (elbow) will begin the season in the starting rotation, and he'll make a start within the team's first five games, according to manager Terry Collins.

Fantasy Tip: Harvey is a hot name in fantasy circles, but it's imperative to remember that pitchers often struggle with control once they return from Tommy John surgery. He's likely to be overdrafted in a lot of traditional leagues, but he's a high-end SP2 with ace talent.

Mets | Matt Harvey to face batters

Sat, 21 Feb 2015 07:29:35 -0800

New York Mets SP Matt Harvey (elbow) is scheduled face to batters in a week for the first time since he underwent Tommy John surgery, according to a source. He is scheduled to throw two bullpen sessions with one occurring Sunday, Feb. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Harvey looks to have a good chance to be ready for the season, but he should still be considered an injury risk since he is coming off a major surgery. Owners can consider selecting Harvey in the middle rounds of drafts.

Mets | Noah Syndergaard headed for minors

Fri, 20 Feb 2015 13:26:13 -0800

New York Mets SP Noah Syndergaard is expected to begin the season in the minor leagues to receive more seasoning.

Fantasy Tip: Syndergaard started 26 games at Class AAA where he posted underwhelming ratios (4.60 ERA, 1.48 WHIP), but an impressive 9.8 K/9 mark. He is a top prospect, but the organization is unlikely to rush him. He is a stash candidate in cavernous mixed and NL-only formats, but can be ignored in the majority of seasonal leagues.

Mets | No shoulder pain for David Wright

Fri, 20 Feb 2015 13:13:07 -0800

New York Mets 3B David Wright (shoulder) is in "outstanding shape" and there is "no pain whatsoever" in his shoulder, according to his orthopedist.

Fantasy Tip: Wright will be a popular bounce-back candidate during draft season, but at 32, expecting a return to fantasy dominance is ill-advised. Plus, with Wright and the team opting to avoid shoulder surgery, there is a chance going under the knife will be the end result at some point this season. It would be wise to wait until the upside outweighs the risk before investing on draft day.

Mets | Matt Harvey won't have ultra-restricting cap

Fri, 20 Feb 2015 11:10:44 -0800

New York Mets SP Matt Harvey (elbow) won't have an ultra-restrictive innings cap this year after returning from Tommy John surgery, according to general manager Sandy Alderson. Alderson said Harvey won't have "extra special precautions" during spring training either. Harvey is already 16 months removed from the surgery. The Mets don't want to publicly disclose an innings cap and have it become a headline all year. Alderson also said Harvey would pitch in the playoffs if the team makes it. New York could delay his start to the season, have him do an expanded All-Star break and skip some starts to preserve his innings this year.

Fantasy Tip: Harvey's injury discount in this year's drafts may be well worth it, especially if he's allowed to exceed 170 innings. However, you must realize that he could be primed for a slow start after returning from TJS. Still, he's certainly worth the risk in the middle rounds because of his upside.
