Mets | Jose Reyes hitless

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 06:35:38 -0700

New York Mets 3B Jose Reyes is 0-for-9 with Class AA Binghamton but said he'll let the team know when he feels comfortable at the plate and at third base. "My body feels perfect. I just need my timing, and some more action at third base," Reyes said.

Fantasy Tip: Reyes will probably need another week or two on the farm and could be a nice bonus to have for steals after the All-Star break.

Mets | Curtis Granderson has calf strain

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 23:56:45 -0700

New York Mets OF Curtis Granderson (calf) is dealing with a small calf strain, manager Terry Collins said Tuesday, June 28. It's the same reason he sat Sunday, June 26, as he had trouble loosening up after the weather delay.

Fantasy Tip: Granderson should be reserved in all seasonal daily leagues and avoided in DFS until he can officially return and play at least back-to-back games without any setbacks.

Mets | Matt Harvey first to 10 losses in NL

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 22:37:10 -0700

New York Mets SP Matt Harvey had his start Tuesday, June 28, against the Washington Nationals halted by an 83-minute rain delay, but not before he gave up one run on four hits and three walks over 3 2/3 innings to fall to 4-10.

Fantasy Tip: Harvey actually has a 2.27 ERA since picking up his last win on May 30, but the Mets have scored a whopping six runs total in his five June starts, so he'll finish this month without a win. Given his team's offensive woes and his bad luck in general this season, owners might want to sit Harvey against the Miami Marlins on Monday.

Mets | Syndergaard, Matz to keep pitching

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 14:30:12 -0700

New York Mets SPs Noah Syndergaard (elbow) and Steven Matz (elbow) are both dealing with bone spurs but will continue to pitch, according to manager Terry Collins. Matz's spurs are worse and will need to be surgically removed eventually, although the Mets are hoping it can wait until the offseason. Surgery will require a three-month recovery timeline. Syndergaard's bone spur is "very small," and 90% of pitchers have something comparable, according to general manager Sandy Alderson. Syndergaard is being treated with anti-inflammatories and won't need offseason surgery. The Mets have assurances from team doctors that Matz can't do more damage by continuing to pitch through his issue. The Mets will monitor Matz on a start-to-start basis to make sure he's not changing his mechanics and compromising his body in another way. Alderson said New York will consider going to a six-man rotation when SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) returns in August.

Fantasy Tip: It's troublesome to see the Mets' young starters deal with elbow concerns, but at least they aren't significant issues. However, at least in the immediate future, that makes both Syndergaard and Matz very risky fantasy starters. Matz is a bigger question mark since his bone spurs are more significant, and the good news with Thor is that his velocity wasn't affected in his start Monday.

Mets | Steven Matz pushed back to Thursday

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 13:27:51 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz (elbow) will make his next start against the Chicago Cubs Thursday, June 30.

Fantasy Tip: Matz will have his start pushed back a day, and Logan Verrett will make a spot start against the Washington Nationals in place of Matz Wednesday, June 29. View both hurlers as risky options, as Matz is pitching with bone spurs in his left elbow against a high-end offense, and Verrett has underwhelming numbers as a starter (4.61 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 7.5 K/9).

Mets | Logan Verrett starting vs. Nats Wednesday

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 13:18:47 -0700

New York Mets SP Logan Verrett will make a spot start against the Washington Nationals Wednesday, June 29.

Fantasy Tip: Through eight career starts, Verrett owns a 4.61 ERA, a 1.37 WHIP and a 7.5 K/9. View him as a low-end option in seasonal leagues and daily contests Wednesday.

Mets | August return likely for Lucas Duda

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 13:14:19 -0700

New York Mets 1B Lucas Duda (back) is still approximately two weeks away from baseball activities, which all but ends the potential of a return in July.

Fantasy Tip: James Loney has been filling in for New York with Duda out, and Loney is a viable starter in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues, and he could do in a pinch in deep mixed setups. Duda is worth stashing in the majority of seasonal leagues, but you'll want to monitor his progress and keep your expectations in check going forward.

Mets | Noah Syndergaard denies reports

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 08:56:05 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Mets SP Noah Syndergaard (elbow) is denying reports that he's pitching through a bone spur in his right elbow. "I do not. No. My arm feels great. It's amazing what a little anti-inflammatories can do," Syndergaard said. He said there is nothing structurally wrong with his elbow. The good news is he touched 100 mph with his fastball in his outing Monday, June 27, and felt no pain while allowing five runs on seven hits in the start.

Fantasy Tip: Thor has looked a lot more human and hittable in his last two outings, and it could be because he's pitching through bone spurs in his elbow. Regardless of what's really going on, fantasy owners have to be concerned with his elbow issues and wonder how effective he'll be from here on out. Tread carefully with how you use him in the immediate future.

Mets | Noah Syndergaard has a bone spur

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 05:50:47 -0700

Updating previous reports, New York Mets SP Noah Syndergaard (elbow) is indeed pitching through a bone spur in his right elbow.

Fantasy Tip: Bone spurs are tricky. It's possible he can pitch through it this season, but there will be a level of discomfort. Having them removed is also a slippery slope because there has been evidence of having spurs removed leads to instability in the elbow, causing the ligaments to tear. Thor is an SP1 in fantasy, but he's a volatile piece to have right now. Look for the team to treat him with kid gloves because of the number of injuries they've dealt with this year.

Mets | Noah Syndergaard hit hard Monday

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 04:01:29 -0700

New York Mets SP Noah Syndergaard gave up five runs and walked three in just three innings of work Monday, June 27, in an 11-4 loss to the Washington Nationals. It was Syndergaard's first loss in nearly two months.

Fantasy Tip: Rumors about bone spurs and elbow issues are flying around Syndergaard, but up to now he's pitched just fine. The Nationals are a pretty hot team so this could just be an aberration. Don't read too much into it for now, but if a second bad outing occurs then red flags could be raised.

Mets | Jose Reyes hitless in rehab game

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 19:07:29 -0700

New York Mets SS Jose Reyes was hitless in three at-bats with a walk in his second minor-league rehab game with Class A Brooklyn Monday, June 27.

Fantasy Tip: Reyes is building up his stamina and trying to get back in game shape for a return to the majors. Once he is able to return, likely right after the All-Star break, he will be worth a look in most NL-only fantasy leagues and some mixed formats. He still could hit for high average, steal bases and log plenty of runs scored if he sticks at the top of the Mets lineup.

Mets | New York works out Yulieski Gourriel

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 15:24:14 -0700

Cuban 3B Yulieski Gourriel worked out for the New York Mets Monday, June 27, and general manager Sandy Alderson, special assistant J.P. Ricciardi, international scouting director Chris Becerra, pro scouring director Jim D'Aloia and scout Roy Smith attended the workout. A timetable for Gourriel's signing is unknown. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees and Houston Astros are also interested.

Fantasy Tip: Gourriel is a promising international prospect, but he'll need to develop more power to be attractive at the major league level at the hot corner. Keep an eye on him in single-universe and dynasty leagues moving forward.

Mets | Zack Wheeler feels fine after catch

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 14:42:05 -0700

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) felt "fine" after having a catch Monday, June 27. There's still nothing on his schedule yet, however.

Fantasy Tip: Wheeler recently experienced a slight setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, so this is positive news to hear regarding the hard-throwing right-hander. Although it doesn't look like he'll be returning as quick as initially anticipated coming into the campaign, Wheeler still carries a significant amount of potential, and has the ability to be a possible difference-maker for fantasy teams in the final months. Unfortunately, though, it's still unknown when he can come back to the Mets.

Mets | Surgery an option for Steven Matz

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 14:39:10 -0700

Updating previous reports, New York Mets SP Steven Matz (elbow) will discuss whether to have surgery on his elbow Tuesday, June 28. If he has an operation now, it would be six weeks before he'd be able to resume throwing.

Fantasy Tip: Pitchers often pitch through bone spurs, but the Mets may want Matz to address the issue now if he's unable to pitch through the pain in his left elbow. Either way, Matz owners should be very concerned, as he may lose his effectiveness if he pitches through the issue. Make plans for the worst if you own the young lefty.

Mets | Juan Lagares set for rehab assignment

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 14:35:32 -0700

New York Mets OF Juan Lagares (thumb) will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Class AA Binghamton Tuesday, June 28.

Fantasy Tip: Lagares hasn't started a game in the outfield in weeks, but it looks like he's getting closer. Even so, he's not really an option outside of the deepest of the leagues, as while he does offer a decent batting average, the former Gold Glove winner is also very limited when it comes to power numbers and steals. When Lagares is ready to return, that will negatively affect Alejando De Aza and potentially newcomer Brandon Nimmo.
