Mets | NYM will make significant Daniel Murphy bid

Wed, 18 Nov 2015 23:43:14 -0800

The New York Mets are expected to make a significant bid to keep free-agent 2B Daniel Murphy (Mets) in their uniform.

Fantasy Tip: Murphy saw his draft status shoot way up in the postseason, but how much of it is artificial? He will probably go quickly among second basemen drafted in NL and mixed leagues, but was the postseason an aberration?

Mets | NYM unlikely to keep Ruben Tejada

Wed, 18 Nov 2015 18:28:33 -0800

The New York Mets are unlikely to tender a contract to INF Ruben Tejada.

Fantasy Tip: The arbitration-eligible Tejada earned $1.88 million in 2015 and would be projected to make slightly over $3 million next year if the team went to a hearing, an amount the Mets apparently do not feel comfortable paying to a player who isn't guaranteed to have a starting role. Tejada hit .261 with three home runs and 28 RBIs in 116 regular-season games but saw his year end prematurely when he suffered a fractured right fibula in the NLCS. He is not a great offensive option and can go undrafted next spring in most fantasy formats.

Mets | Ben Zobrist drawing interest from Mets

Mon, 16 Nov 2015 11:33:47 -0800

Free-agent 2B Ben Zobrist (Royals) has been contacted by the New York Mets, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: The Mets are unlikely to bring back postseason hero Daniel Murphy, so Zobrist would give them an option at second base and to use in the outfield. He's steady at the plate with a career average of .265 and has double-digit home run power, although a move to Citi Field could hurt his power numbers. Zobrist's primary value in traditional leagues lies in deep mixed formats as a middle infielder. His positional versatility is his biggest asset to fantasy owners.

Mets | Zack Wheeler off the block

Sun, 15 Nov 2015 15:28:17 -0800

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler will be kept by the team, as sources indicate the Mets are going to build around the pitching staff.

Fantasy Tip: Wheeler will be under most fantasy owner's radars due to his Tommy John surgery. If you have a chance to draft him low, do so. He shouldn't go much higher than the middle rounds on most boards due to his injury.

Mets | Daniel Murphy opts to test the market

Fri, 13 Nov 2015 14:22:00 -0800

New York Mets 2B Daniel Murphy rejected the New York Mets' one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer Friday, Nov. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Murphy is a reliable contributor across standard fantasy categories, and he'll check out as a low-end second baseman for the majority of seasonal leagues entering 2016. However, there is a chance his huge postseason showing will put a little too much helium into his fantasy stock, so be careful not to overreach for the veteran next spring.

Mets | Agent pleased with Matt Harvey's workload

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 15:25:45 -0800

New York Mets SP Matt Harvey's workload was acceptable, in retrospect, according to his agent Scott Boras. "The funny thing was a lot was said about Matt Harvey not wanting to throw in the playoffs, and yet the entire design of what we were talking about in August was just that -- how we could pare down his innings in September so that he can throw in the playoffs," Boras said. "And frankly, the Mets came out with a very good plan for that after discussion. The doctor agreed with it. It allowed Matt really long periods of rest in September, and frankly it allowed him to perform at probably his best levels because instead of throwing 250 innings, he threw 210."

Fantasy Tip: Through his first 65 career starts, Harvey owns a 2.53 ERA, a 2.65 FIP, a 1.00 WHIP and a 9.5 K/9. He is a fringe fantasy ace, and worth building your virtual rotation around in 2016. Expect the 27-year-old hurler to have his best counting stats in 2016, too, as barring injury, he'll have a full season of starts.

Mets | NY not trying to trade catchers

Tue, 10 Nov 2015 17:16:22 -0800

New York Mets Cs Travis d'Arnaud and Kevin Plawecki are not expected to be available on the trade market this offseason, according to assistant general manager John Ricco. "Catching, we've said many times, is a position we can't have enough depth. We have two guys we think are frontline catchers. I think there's ways for us, especially in the short-term, to make use of both of them. The short answer is I don't think we will be talking about either one of them because they're both going to help us win," Ricco said. The Mets also aren't seriously considering moving either catcher to another position.

Fantasy Tip: d'Arnaud will likely see the majority of starts behind the dish for the Mets moving forward, but Plawecki is certainly a step up from a traditional backup catcher. d'Arnaud has more upside offensively and should be targeted in the late middle rounds. Plawecki makes for a great second catcher in leagues that start two backstops.

Mets | NYM may platoon catchers in 2016

Tue, 10 Nov 2015 14:05:50 -0800

New York Mets Cs Kevin Plawecki and Travis d'Arnaud may platoon next season.

Fantasy Tip: Plawecki and d'Arnaud did a good job last year, so the team's solution will likely involve splitting the catchers up depending on matchups. This may depress their draft status to the mid to low rounds in mixed drafts.

Mets | Juan Lagares will remain starter

Tue, 10 Nov 2015 11:40:12 -0800

New York Mets OF Juan Lagares will remain the starting center fielder in 2016 despite the fact that the Mets are shopping for a center fielder in the offseason. Lagares is guaranteed $2.5 million next year, $4.5 million in 2017, $6.5 million in 2018 and $9 million in 2019. The Mets are looking for an outfielder that can complement him. He primarily played against left-handed pitchers in 2015 and hit .259/.289/.358.

Fantasy Tip: The Mets mainly like Lagares because he's a superior defender, which means he doesn't carry a lot of fantasy value. He's perhaps best used on FantasyScore as a cheap sleeper pick when facing the right left-handed hurlers.

Mets | NYM interested in Gerardo Parra

Sun, 08 Nov 2015 11:32:18 -0800

The New York Mets are reportedly interested in free-agent OF Gerardo Parra (Orioles).

Fantasy Tip: Parra hit .291 with 14 home runs, 51 RBIs and 14 steals in 155 games with the Brewers and Orioles last season. He's a worth taking a flier on in the later rounds of fantasy baseball drafts next year because of his solid batting average and decent (though not eye-popping) numbers in most categories.

Mets | NYM interested in Dexter Fowler

Sun, 08 Nov 2015 11:24:21 -0800

The New York Mets are reportedly interested in free-agent OF Dexter Fowler (Cubs).

Fantasy Tip: Fowler hit .250 with 17 home runs, 46 RBIs and 20 steals in 156 regular-season games as the Cubs' leadoff hitter and center fielder and scored a career-high 102 runs in 2015. He is a reliable source of runs and stolen bases and should be taken in the middle rounds of fantasy baseball drafts next year.

Mets | NYM interested in Denard Span

Sun, 08 Nov 2015 11:20:27 -0800

The New York Mets are reportedly interested in free-agent OF Denard Span (Nationals).

Fantasy Tip: Span hit .301 with five home runs, 22 RBIs and 15 steals in just 61 games during an injury-plagued 2015 campaign. Any team that signs him would not wind up losing a draft pick due to the fact that the Nats did not make him a qualifying offer. If he can stay healthy, he will make an excellent source of runs and stolen bases for fantasy owners in 2016.

Mets | Michael Cuddyer undergoes surgery

Fri, 06 Nov 2015 17:10:53 -0800

New York Mets OF Michael Cuddyer (hernia) underwent surgery for a sports hernia Thursday, Nov. 5, although the team officially described the procedure as "core muscle" surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Despite the surgery, Cuddyer is expected to have a normal spring training camp without any limitations. He hit .259 with 10 home runs and 41 RBIs in 117 regular-season games during his first season in the Big Apple and only went 1-for-11 in the postseason. Cuddyer is unlikely to have much value outside of NL-only leagues, with Michael Conforto expected to see the bulk of the playing time in left field in 2016.

Mets | Juan Lagares won't need surgery

Fri, 06 Nov 2015 09:50:51 -0800

New York Mets OF Juan Lagares (elbow) will not need to have surgery to fix an elbow issue that affected his throwing this year. Manager Terry Collins had said there was a possibility that Lagares would need Tommy John surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Lagares doesn't offer fantasy owners much offensively, as he is a much better defensive center fielder, which makes him strictly an option as outfield depth in NL-only formats.

Mets | Daniel Murphy receives offer

Fri, 06 Nov 2015 09:28:21 -0800

New York Mets 2B Daniel Murphy received a one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer from the team Friday, Nov. 6.

Fantasy Tip: Murphy was unbelievable during the first two rounds of the playoffs. In a power-thirsty position, Murphy is in the upper-middle portion of the fantasy 2B pack.
