Mets | Wilmer Flores will be 100%

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 14:25:40 -0800

New York Mets SS Wilmer Flores (leg) is working out at full strength and says he will be 100% for spring training.

Fantasy Tip: Flores has some surprisng pop for a middle infielder (16 homers in 137 games), but a utility role will severely limit his fantasy potential to deep NL-only games.

Mets | Jeurys Familia avoids arbitration

Wed, 03 Feb 2016 15:59:00 -0800

New York Mets RP Jeurys Familia avoided arbitration Wednesday, Feb. 3, by agreeing to a one-year, $4.1 million deal.

Fantasy Tip: Familia had an amazing year with a 1.85 ERA and converted 43 of his 48 save chances. He has solidified his spot as a top-end fantasy closer in just one season.

Mets | Michael Conforto to play some RF

Wed, 03 Feb 2016 12:16:33 -0800

New York Mets OFs Michael Conforto and Alejandro De Aza are expected to be exposed to right field in spring training, according to general manager Sandy Alderson. Alderson doesn't expect OF Yoenis Cespedes to play any right field. Conforto played right field seven times as a freshman in college in 2012 but has mainly played in left. De Aza has appeared for 52 starts in his career in right field. Cespedes could play center field against righties and left field against left-handed pitchers.

Fantasy Tip: The future is bright for the lefty swinging Conforto after he slugged nine home runs in just 56 games in his first taste of major league action. He'll be in a platoon role in the outfield for New York, and he must improve against lefties (.214/.267/.214) before he'll become anything more than a late-round selection in deep mixed leagues.

Mets | Sixth starter on tap for Mets

Wed, 03 Feb 2016 10:58:42 -0800

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) is expected to return around midseason, but the team plans to use a sixth starter, occasionally, before he returns to keep pitchers fresh.

Fantasy Tip: The team wants to limit Steven Matz's innings, and this will be a way for them to do so. Matz is in the SP3 range with breakout potential. Wheeler is a decent flyer late it drafts.

Mets | Two Mets catchers to test other positions

Wed, 03 Feb 2016 10:40:03 -0800

New York Mets C Travis d'Arnaud and C Kevin Plawecki will play other positions to be determined in spring training.

Fantasy Tip: d'Arnaud's power makes him a midrange catcher option in fantasy.

Mets | Zack Wheeler alters arm angle

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 12:33:53 -0800

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow), who is currently rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, has altered his arm angle and is hoping for similar success that SP Jacob deGrom found with more downward movement and less stress on his elbow. The Mets have slowed Wheeler down after his surgery and now anticipate a July comeback after a 15-month layoff.

Fantasy Tip: Wheeler is just another one of New York's bright young pitching talents, and he'll be overshadowed now that he's been out since 2014. Starters coming off Tommy John surgery usually require a period of adjustment, so don't be surprised if he's up and down upon his return in the second half. Even then, he might be worth stashing in an NL-only or deep mixed league if you have extra spots.

Mets | Lucas Duda deserves full-time role

Mon, 01 Feb 2016 16:39:59 -0800

New York Mets 1B Lucas Duda deserves everyday playing time against left-handed pitchers after he hit .285 with seven home runs against southpaws in 2015 in 123 at-bats, in the opinion of ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin.

Fantasy Tip: Duda is once again a candidate to slug 30 home runs, and his improvements against lefties are a big reason why. However, he's prone to long slumps and is known as a streaky hitter, so be prepared to live with that if you own him.

Mets | Neil Walker avoids arbitration

Fri, 29 Jan 2016 13:21:53 -0800

New York Mets 2B Neil Walker re-signed a one-year, $10.55 million contract to avoid arbitration Friday, Jan. 29.

Fantasy Tip: Through six full seasons in the league, Walker has averaged 67 runs, 16 home runs, 70 RBI and a .273/.338/.433 slash line per year, and more of the same should be expected in his first campaign with the Mets. He is a low-risk option as your starting second baseman in mixed leagues, and he can be scooped up in the late middle rounds.

Mets | Wilmer Flores to be super-utility player

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 18:20:43 -0800

New York Mets INF Wilmer Flores is expected to be used in a super-utility role during the 2016 season, according to manager Terry Collins, who noted that he is capable of playing all four infield positions.

Fantasy Tip: Flores platooned at shortstop last year with Ruben Tejada, batting .263 with 16 home runs and 59 RBIs in 137 regular-season contests. However, the offseason acquisition of SS Asdrubal Cabrera means that it is uncertain how much playing time Flores will receive while spelling Cabrera, 3B David Wright, 2B Neil Walker and 1B Lucas Duda. His ability to hit for power means he should still be selected in the middle rounds of NL-only fantasy leagues and the later rounds of mixed leagues.

Mets | David Wright expected to bat second

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 18:13:21 -0800

New York Mets 3B David Wright is expected to hit second in the batting order as a result of OF Yoenis Cespedes returning to the club, according to manager Terry Collins.

Fantasy Tip: The 33-year-old Wright hit .289 with five home runs and 17 RBIs in 152 at-bats during an injury-plagued 2015 season, including a .297 mark out of the second spot in the batting order. When healthy, he can still be a productive player, especially with the protection surrounding him in the lineup.

Mets | Ruben Tejada sheds walking boot

Wed, 27 Jan 2016 17:34:00 -0800

New York Mets SS Ruben Tejada (leg) recently shed the walking boot which was protecting his fractured right fibula. He has been working out in his native Panama and he could report to the team's spring training complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Monday, Feb. 1, which would be more than three weeks before the mandatory reporting date for position players.

Fantasy Tip: Tejada is expected to split time at shortstop with Wilmer Flores this season, although he is considered the weaker hitter of the two. He should only be viewed as middle infield depth for NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues.

Mets | Zack Wheeler rehab update

Wed, 27 Jan 2016 17:05:39 -0800

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) is currently working out at the team's spring training complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla., although he hasn't been cleared to throw off a mound yet.

Fantasy Tip: If all goes well with his rehab, Wheeler could resume pitching in the majors by June or July. He missed the entire 2015 season due to Tommy John surgery but he could be worth taking a late-round flier on in NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues.

Mets | Wilmer Flores sheds walking boot

Wed, 27 Jan 2016 17:02:05 -0800

New York Mets SS Wilmer Flores (ankle) recently shed the walking boot which was protecting his fractured left ankle and has been working out at the team's complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla. He hopes to resume hitting later this week.

Fantasy Tip: Flores is expected to be healthy by the time spring training camp opens. He will split time with Ruben Tejada at shortstop for the Mets, although he is considered the more attractive fantasy option because of his ability to hit for power. He hit .263 with 16 home runs and 59 RBIs in 137 regular-season games last year, although concerns about his playing time could cause him to fall to the later rounds of drafts.

Mets | Yoenis Cespedes contract details

Sat, 23 Jan 2016 12:18:32 -0800

Updating a previous report, New York Mets OF Yoenis Cespedes' three-year, $75 million contract will pay him $25 million annually, according to a source. However, if he decides to opt out after the 2016 season, he will make $27.5 million because the deal is front-loaded with a bonus. Cespedes' contract contains a full no-trade clause and does not include deferred money.

Fantasy Tip: Cespedes should be viewed as a high-end OF2 in mixed fantasy baseball leagues. He hit .291 with 35 home runs and 105 RBIs in 159 regular-season games with the Tigers and Mets last year.

Mets | Yoenis Cespedes re-signs with NYM

Fri, 22 Jan 2016 20:31:56 -0800

Updating a previous story, free-agent OF Yoenis Cespedes (Mets) has agreed to terms on a three-year deal worth $75 million to return to the New York Mets, according to sources. The deal includes an opt-out option after one year and a full no-trade clause.

Fantasy Tip: Cespedes ultimately decided to return to the Mets rather than sign with the Washington Nationals. He has excellent power, and he is a strong OF2 heading into 2016.
