Yankees | Carlos Beltran continues red-hot June

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 23:49:25 -0700

New York Yankees DH Carlos Beltran went 3-for-4 and scored twice on Monday, June 27, but it proved not to be enough as the Texas Rangers rallied late for a 9-6 victory.

Fantasy Tip: Beltran was average in April and pretty good in May, but he has been downright ridiculous in June, batting .358 with seven homers, 22 RBI and 15 runs scored. This month's surge has left 39-year-old with a .294 average, 19 home runs, 53 RBI and 44 runs scored - numbers good enough to make him a top-20 outfielder in fantasy.

Yankees | Mark Teixeira homers in second straight

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 23:14:03 -0700

New York Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira flashed vintage form with his first multi-hit game in over a month against the Texas Rangers on Monday, June 27, going 3-for-5 with a solo home run and two runs scored in his third game back since coming off the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Well, well, well look who appears to be feeling better now. Teixeira left the yard for the first time since May 22 with a solo shot in Sunday's home loss to the Minnesota Twins, then posted his first multi-hit game since May 16 just over 24 hours later. It's still far too early to say the 36-year-old is ready to be inserted back into the majority of fantasy lineups, but at least he's giving owners a reason to consider it.

Yankees | Alex Rodriguez to sit more often?

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 13:37:08 -0700

New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez won't play against a lot of right-handed pitchers in the short term, as manager Joe Girardi said he's going to "do something different" with his use of Rodriguez. Rodriguez's OPS against right-handers is just .584, while his OPS against lefties is .837. He'll start against a lefty Tuesday, June 28, but after that it's unknown how much playing time he'll receive.

Fantasy Tip: A-Rod is hitting just .223 on the season with eight home runs and 26 RBI. Despite only two homers in June he's hitting .282 (22-for-78), but he hasn't produced for fantasy owners like he did in a surprise bounceback 2015 season. With more time on the bench in the short term, he's not worth keeping around in shallower mixed formats.

Yankees | Alex Rodriguez sitting out

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 13:21:10 -0700

New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez is not in the starting lineup against Texas Rangers SP Chi Chi Rodriguez Monday, June 27. OF Carlos Beltran will serve as the designated hitter, while OF Aaron Hicks will start in right field and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Hicks has been more productive in June and has at least one hit in six of his last 10 games. He is still hitting .219 on the season, and owners should have more attractive options available in their leagues.

Yankees | Mark Teixeira homers in second game back

Sun, 26 Jun 2016 13:39:05 -0700

New York Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira went 1-for-3 with a solo home run - one of only two hits the Yankees could muster on Sunday, June 26, against the Minnesota Twins - in his second game since coming off the disabled list on Saturday, June 25, due to a cartilage tear in his right knee.

Fantasy Tip: The home run was his first since April 13, although the fact he has missed 24 games already has something to do with that. While Teixeira may be something of a sentimental choice, owners are advised to avoid using him until he can lift his average (.179) a bit or post his first multi-hit game in over since the middle of May.

Yankees | Michael Pineda enjoys best start of year

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 13:15:45 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda settled for his second no-decision in as many starts against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday, June 25, yielding only a solo homer among the two hits he allowed over six innings while striking out eight.

Fantasy Tip: Pineda was likely dropped in a lot of leagues a while ago as his ERA soared to 6.92 at the end of May, but he's been able to bring that number down to 5.51 thanks to five starts in June during which he is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA. He has at least eight strikeouts in four of those outings, so he's not exactly pitching to contact. However, owners probably need to avoid him for now, or at least until after his next start against the Texas Rangers on Thursday.

Yankees | Ike Davis designated for assignment

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 09:12:22 -0700

New York Yankees 1B Ike Davis was designated for assignment Saturday, June 25.

Fantasy Tip: Davis had a .214 average with one RBI during his limited playing time with the Yankees, but it is not known if another team will add him. Owners in all leagues can drop Davis if they have him.

Yankees | Mark Teixeira activated from DL

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 07:39:39 -0700

New York Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira (knee) was activated from the 15-day disabled list Saturday, June 25. Teixeira will start at first base against Minnesota Twins SP Ervin Santana Saturday and is batting sixth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Teixeira is hitting only .180 with three home runs and 12 RBI so far this season. Owners probably should wait until he is more productive at the plate before using him in their lineups.

Yankees | Brian McCann out against Minny

Fri, 24 Jun 2016 13:33:44 -0700

New York Yankees C Brian McCann is not in the starting lineup Friday, June 24. C Austin Romine is starting behind the plate and batting ninth against SP Tommy Milone Friday.

Fantasy Tip: McCann remains a middling starting option behind the plate in the majority of seasonal leagues with a mediocre 29 runs, 10 home runs, 29 RBI and .220/.323/.414 slash line. Romine's lack of playing time limits him to being a low-end option in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and AL-only leagues, as his .272/.286/.432 slash line through 85 plate appearances isn't too bad for a backup backstop.

Yankees | Chase Headley swats grand slam

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 16:32:08 -0700

New York Yankees 3B Chase Headley went 1-for-3 with a grand slam Wednesday, June 22, against the Colorado Rockies. It was his fourth home run of the season, and the 32-year-old finished with a run scored and four RBI for the day.

Fantasy Tip: Despite the encouraging game, Headley has been one of the most disappointing third basemen in all of fantasy baseball this season, and his struggles haven't gone away. In fact, the grand slam today was just his first long ball of June, and he also drove in more runs this afternoon than he did previously for the entire month.

Yankees | Carlos Beltran mashes 19th homer

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 16:30:52 -0700

New York Yankees OF Carlos Beltran went 1-for-3 with his 19th home run of the season Wednesday, June 22, versus the Colorado Rockies. He finished with one run scored, three RBI, and he also drew a walk.

Fantasy Tip: Beltran has simply been tremendous for the Yankees and fantasy owners who were wise enough to invest in him this season, as he also now has 51 RBI. He's been especially hot over his past five contests, having gone 9-for-21 with three homers and seven runs driven in over that span.

Yankees | CC Sabathia has worst start of '16

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 15:41:50 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia managed to escape with a no-decision Wednesday, June 22, against the Colorado Rockies, but not before spinning his worst effort of the season. The veteran southpaw lasted a season-low 4 1/3 innings, surrendering a season-high six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks. He also picked up three strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Amazingly, it was just the first time all year Sabathia has allowed more than three runs in a start, and he had surrendered two or less in each of his last seven outings. His pitching has surprisingly been one of the large reasons why the Yankees have been able to stay afloat thus far, but everyone knew his outstanding run would be coming to an end sooner than later. Even so, he's done more than enough this year for his owners to stick with him. Caution should be expressed, though, if he struggles again his next time out.

Yankees | X-rays negative for CC Sabathia

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 13:57:26 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (ankle) turned his ankle during his start Wednesday, June 22. His X-ray results were negative, and he is expected to make his next start, according to manager Joe Girardi.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia was roughed up by the Colorado Rockies in the start Wednesday, as he allowed six runs -- five earned -- on seven hits and two walks. And while he owned a 2.20 ERA over 11 starts entering Wednesday, fantasy owners shouldn't be too eager to cast Sabathia as anything more than a mid-rotation starter. It is likely still best to be selective with who you start him against, too. Stay tuned for updates, but it appears he's avoided injury.

Yankees | Aaron Judge heating up in Class AAA

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 12:06:54 -0700

New York Yankees OF Aaron Judge has hit .353 with five home runs and 10 RBI through his past 10 games with Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Fantasy Tip: Judge should debut with the Yankees sometime this season, and as the team appears to be trending in the selling direction, it could be sooner than later that he brings his high-end power to Yankee Stadium. He is a viable stash candidate in cavernous mixed and AL-only formats and a player to monitor in shallower setups.

Yankees | Luis Severino still not ready

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 09:07:33 -0700

New York Yankees SP Luis Severino is still not ready to return to the majors, according to manager Joe Girardi.

"We've talked about Sevvy -- the location of his fastball has not been great, his changeup has not been as effective as we need it to be and his slider has been inconsistent," Girardi said. "We want to get him straightened out; we don't want to just bring him up because maybe another guy is struggling. You've got to make pitches here. Pitching here is a lot different. You make mistakes here and they are hit hard."

Fantasy Tip: Severino is 3-0 with a 2.52 ERA through four starts for Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and he pitched 8 1/3 innings of one-run ball in his last start Saturday, June 18. It appears he is close, but for now, he remains nothing more than a speculative stash in deep mixed and AL-only leagues.
