Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury swinging Thursday

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 14:42:28 -0700

New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) will take swings during soft toss Thursday, March 26, and he thinks it'll be a good test to see if he can be ready for opening day. He hasn't played in a game since March 15 due to a right oblique strain that the team is calling "extremely mild." If Ellsbury can play in a game by March 31, he should be ready for opening day, according to manager Joe Girardi. Ellsbury has also been doing sprints, playing catch and swinging a broomstick.

Fantasy Tip: The Yanks are being extremely cautious with Ellsbury because of the nature of his injury. It remains to be seen if he'll be ready for opening day, but unless he suffers a setback, his draft value shouldn't change. You may want to be cautious in using Ellsbury ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) at FantasyScore right out of the gates, though.

Yankees | Alex Rodriguez subject to more testing

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 13:20:09 -0700

New York Yankees DH Alex Rodriguez is subject to increased drug testing by Major League Baseball as a result of his 162-game suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs, according to baseball commissioner Rob Manfred.

Fantasy Tip: This news shouldn't sway your outlook of Rodriguez's ($3,300) fantasy stock. He is a late-round flier, and the risk associated with his age (39) and health (just 181 plate appearances since the beginning of 2013) are far more prominent than anything related to performance-enhancing drugs. However, Rodriguez is having a nice spring (a double, two home runs and a .286/.394/.536 slash line) and could be a nice speculative grab in the endgame of drafts, especially with his pedigree and news of ample at-bats.

Yankees | Alex Rodriguez pushing for full-time role

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 12:13:48 -0700

New York Yankees DH Alex Rodriguez could be the full-time designated hitter this season. Both general manager Brian Cashman and manager Joe Girardi have indicated they believe Rodriguez can contribute on a regular basis.

Fantasy Tip: Through 33 plate appearances this spring, Rodriguez ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) has a double, two home runs and a .286/.394/.536 slash line. While the production doesn't significantly stand out, he could be a nice speculative grab in the endgame of drafts, especially with his pedigree and likelihood of ample at-bats. In FantasyScore contests, there is a lot of room for profit in his cap-friendly price, too.

Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury likely to be ready

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 11:42:03 -0700

New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) is making progress and will likely be ready for opening day, according to manager Joe Girardi. "He did some light broomstick swings (Monday)," Girardi said of the center fielder, who is out with a strained right oblique injury. "He is progressing great. As long as he is in (a game) by next Tuesday, I feel that we are going to be OK."

Fantasy Tip: It looks like Ellsbury won't miss much time at all to start the season, but oblique injuries are tricky, so he's not out of the woods just yet. With that said, Ellsbury ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) might be a shaky FantasyScore commodity during the first week if he needs to be rested.

Yankees | Nathan Eovaldi's split a work in progress

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 11:35:47 -0700

New York Yankees SP Nathan Eovaldi's new splitter has been described as a work in progress this spring by C Austin Romine. Eovaldi is also trying to refine his slider and curve ball in camp, and the Yanks are hoping it transforms him into a reliable rotation member in 2015. Pitching coach Larry Rothschild thought Eovaldi was rushing his offspeed pitches in his last outing.

Fantasy Tip: Eovaldi throws as hard as they come for a starting pitcher, but he allowed the most hits in the league last year with a fastball that was too straight. Adding in some wrinkles should help his strikeout numbers in the Bronx, but you'll likely need to practice patience with him, at least initially. Eovaldi is more of an AL-only asset, for now.

Yankees | Dellin Betances unhappy with velocity

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 11:29:36 -0700

New York Yankees RP Dellin Betances topped out at 94 mph with his fastball Tuesday, March 24, and he said his velocity is "nowhere near where it should be." Betances said the velocity will come, but he's been trying to do too much this spring. "It's not a concern for me, no," manager Joe Girardi said of Betances' velocity. "If it goes on for a long time, it will be a concern. Power pitchers usually take a little longer."

Fantasy Tip: A drop in velocity is usually an early sign of injury, if the situation lingers, like Girardi mentioned. For now, you shouldn't be too concerned. He's a popular closing option for fantasy baseball owners, but he's a bit overvalued, especially since Girardi hasn't named a closer yet. Andrew Miller could see save chances in the Bronx, as well, depending on matchups.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka pegged for opening day?

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 13:47:43 -0700

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka appears set to be the opening day starter Monday, April 6, against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka ($7,400, $14.8% of cap) will receive the first crack at the new-look Toronto lineup, but he likely isn't the safest option for daily contests. He has high-end upside, though, and utilizing him for single starts under the microscope of FantasyScore contests is a lot more comforting than a mid-round investment in seasonal formats. Remember, Tanaka is planning to pitch through a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Yankees | Yanks not naming closer?

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 15:56:43 -0700

New York Yankees RPs Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller don't seem too concerned with who will be named a closer in 2015, and manager Joe Girardi isn't worried about naming a ninth-inning guy before opening day. Betances has been considered the favorite this offseason. Girardi plans to use both of them in the late innings, and both relievers said they'll be ready when the phone rings.

Fantasy Tip: Betances was one of the most dominating relievers not in a closing role in 2014, leading many to believe he'll be the guy for the Yanks in the ninth this year. However, Miller was just as dominant in his own right as a lefty specialist, mainly. This could wind up being a closer-by-committee based on matchups in the ninth. Both pitchers are worth drafting for saves in mixed leagues, but be careful not to overvalue Betances with the closing gig in the Bronx cloudy.

Yankees | No timetable for Jacoby Ellsbury

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 12:19:33 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) still does not have a timetable for resuming baseball activities, and if he has not begun them by Monday, March 30, the season opener would be in jeopardy, according to manager Joe Girardi.

Fantasy Tip: Ellsbury ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) continues to say the right things, and it is unlikely he misses any length of time, if any. However, in the short term, he could be a risky FantasyScore play in the first week of the season. Continue to check back for updates leading into opening day. Ellsbury remains a high-end outfield option in seasonal leagues due to his ability to help in every category, and he is an especially strong source of stolen bases.

Yankees | Jose Pirela feeling better

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 11:40:41 -0700

New York Yankees 2B Jose Pirela (concussion) was feeling better Monday, March 23, after suffering a concussion after crashing into the outfield wall in the spring game Sunday, March 22. "He's pretty good today," Joe Girardi said. "He's sore. His neck is sore too, (but) he feels and looks better than what I expected." Pirela will miss at least the next several days, and it's unclear if he'll play again this spring. Girardi said Pirela must go through the concussion protocol.

Fantasy Tip: Pirela was in consideration to make the opening day roster, but this injury likely puts a kink in that possibility. He's a fine young prospect, though, and he's worth consideration as a cheap option in AL-only leagues. If Pirela is able to add positional eligibility at a position other than second base, he'll be a little more intriguing.

Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury improving

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 11:22:43 -0700

New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) thinks his strained right oblique is improving, and he's confident he'll be able to play on opening day. He hasn't played a spring game since March 15, and he said the next step will be to resume hitting and throwing. Ellsbury hit .271 with 16 home runs, 70 RBI and 39 steals in 149 games in 2014. He was hitting .222 (6-for-27) with a triple and an RBI in nine spring games this year.

Fantasy Tip: Ellsbury has been known to be a slow healer, so there are no assurances that he'll be ready to go on opening day. However, if he's in the lineup against the Toronto Blue Jays on opening day, he should be in consideration for a FantasyScore roster spot at $5,900 (11.8% of cap).

Yankees | Jose Pirela has concussion

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 09:30:44 -0700

New York Yankees 2B Jose Pirela (concussion) suffered a concussion after crashing into the outfield fence in the first inning of the game against the New York Mets Sunday, March 22. A brain CT scan and cervical MRI exam both came back negative, and he was released from the hospital. Pirela will be out indefinitely. Pirela was hitting .370 this spring and had an outside chance to make the team before being injured.

Fantasy Tip: Pirela, 25, is one of the team's better infield prospects, but he's likely to begin the year in the minors now. However, he could easily see time at the keystone in the Bronx this year if Stephen Drew struggles. Consider Pirela strictly an AL-only commodity for now.

Yankees | Stephen Drew struggling this spring

Sun, 22 Mar 2015 19:55:58 -0700

New York Yankees 2B Stephen Drew went 0 for 3 and struck out twice Sunday, March 22, and he is hitting .161 this spring.

Fantasy Tip: Drew is going to open the season as the starter at second base, but he could be replaced sooner rather than later and isn't likely to provide worthwhile fantasy numbers while he is starting.

Yankees | Alex Rodriguez ends spring HR drought

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 17:02:08 -0700

New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez hit a home run Friday, March 20, off a 96 mph fastball from Detroit Tigers RP Bruce Rondon. It was Rodriguez's first home run since Wednesday, March 11.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez will have to fight for playing time as the designated hitter and reserve third baseman this season, but the homer is promising. He plays in a homer-friendly ballpark, so he's worth a late-round flier as a cheap source of power in large mixed leagues.

Yankees | CC Sabathia may not start opener

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 07:20:45 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (knee) may not start the season opener, according to manager Joe Girardi. The team has taken it slow with him this spring to make sure he's ready to begin the season.

Fantasy Tip: If Sabathia falls to the final few rounds of the draft, he's worth the gamble. His decorated career may not allow for that to happen, though. On FantasyScore, Sabathia ($4,600; 9.2% of your cap) could be a cheap option in good matchups. Monitor his velocity and effectiveness as spring training closes.
